PING: 10mm Fans...

COSteve- I like your Glock; you mentioned you load for it. How does the brass look after it ejects from pistol? Is the chamber well supported, or does the brass exhibit the "Glock smile" that some Glocks produce?

do we really need any more 10mm options

You're correct that, for a cartridge only 1 in 10 shooters has ever heard of, it's a great selection. But still my response is yes, we need at least one more option. :)

One of the nice aspects of 10mm is that it's reasonably powerful and at the same time, reasonably compact. It's ready made for double stack capacity and that's been accomplished in an all-steel pistol that has virtually the same grip size as a standard 1911 (i.e., the Witness Hunter).

The option 'needed' is an all-steel double-stack single action in 4" to 6" configurations for under $1,500 or so. Custom 1911s costing more than my monthly mortgage payment are, for me, just plain silly, and I don't need no fancy guns, I just needs the ones that shoot.

I measured my Witness Hunter grip and I believe it is less than 1/8" thicker than a 1911 and for my medium-sized hands and stubby fat fingers, it's actually more comfortable than a 1911. Understanding that I think the 1911 may be among the most comfy handguns ever built, that's saying quite a bit. My Big Point being that fine-looking, excellent-handling and nasty-accurate double-stack steel guns in 10mm are a 'natural', I think shooters need a few options.

If the OP's question was "what single 10mm firearm would be your No 1 choice if it were made", then my answer would be something like the equivalent of the M&P 45 Compact, but in steel. If Smith did an M&P 10mm Compact just like the 45, I'd buy one tomorrow, quite literally. But steel would be preferred for a little extra heft.

* * * I don't think there really are any other semi-auto 10mm platforms other than these. Actually, that's quite a selection, do we really need any more 10mm options?

Well, you skipped the venerable S&W 610 L-frame wheelgun option.

Few years back, I stupidly sold my 1st Gen 610 (along with all the moon rings I had), but, man, did I get a LOT of coin for it from a collector dude. :)

Anyway, one interesting variation among 610 owners was to send it to well-known revolver-smith Hamilton Bowen to have the cylinders reamed out to 10mm Magnum specs. Google that, if you've never heard of the cartridge. (In fact, I still have like 100pc of unfired 10mm mag brass laying around somewhere. Got them from Midway).

Bowen would re-stamp the barrel to reflect the gun's new "magnum" status, and on return the owner would have a revolver that could shoot 3-cartridges: 10mm Magnum, 10mm AUTO, and .40S&W - all using the same 10mm moon rings.

Sort a one-stop reloader's dream-gun for all things "10mm."

I might have to do just that, I'm such a 10mm goob I even have a 38-40 setup to shoot cowboy action

Or, ... the motivated 10mm fan will get hisself all three 10mm Glocks and be done with it, except maybe for getting a spare .40 tube for the 20 or 29 to allow for some cheap and easy plinking if said fan is not a reloader.

G29 - EDC concealed gun.

G40 - dedicated woods/boonies/camping/hiking/fishing/outdoors gun.

G20 + Inforce APL - nightstand duty and all-around-anything-else gun.

That'd be great if Glock ergonomics didn't suck for me.
So I'm fine with the 1076 for EDC
the Dan Wesson in the nightstand
and any of the 5 for the woods

I think a 9x25 dillion barrel for the G40 would give you the ultimate woods gun! When I'm able to get the G40 I'd definitely going that route.

As my 10mm barrel is a custom KKM Precision 45-10MM conversion barrel (not listed any more on their website), it has a tighter chamber than a stock Glock's. So tight in fact that I needed to relieve the edge (break the edge) from the 2 - 10 o'clock position slightly to ensure 100% feeding. The tighter, target chamber gives me a bit more accuracy as well as ensuring I don't have any issues with brass.

That said, I use Lee Deluxe Carbide 4 die sets on all my pistol calibers (6) and when adjusted correctly, my resizing die will resize my 10mm brass back down to .421" dia all the way down to the rim. In addition, I use a 20# recoil spring for my 10mm loads; all of which are hot loads. (Why shoot 10mm if you want mild loads? That's what a 40s&w is for.) This, in addition to the 4¾ oz heavier slide and barrel mass, ensures a tight lockup.

BTW, I also have a 24# recoil spring and rod setup I use for my 45 Super loads I shoot from my Jarvis 6" 45 barrel for it as well. This works because the slide is a custom German 6" 45 slide I got for my stock G21 in early 2004 rather than a 10mm slide. Therefore, my 10mm barrel is a custom 45-10mm conversion barrel and it's made to mate with the .050" wider bolt face of the 45.

My custom G21L in very early 2004; almost 13 years ago. (Note the square nose on the slide. Lone Wolf Dist's stainless steel conversion barrels are tapered just like Glock's G40 slide nose. That's what makes my G20/21L so unique.)

The more I look at the G40, the more I like it.

I think I'm gonna pick one of these up right after Christmas. Will be much lighter than my DEagle .50 for a hunting sidearm...and ammo will be a HELL of a lot cheaper.

Yes, and yes.

You'll love it.

10mm is growing on me.

I think my G29 may need to be joined by a 10mm conversion barrel for my G21SF, or perhaps a G20 Gen 4. Awesome caliber. And I'm glad that I reload.

Can you feel the recoil difference between glock 20 gen 4 vs glock 40?

Yes, there's a difference in the felt-recoil - or more accurately, in the felt-effect of the reciprocation of the G40's longer/heavy barrel and slide.

Fired side-by-side with a G20, using the same hot 10mm ammo (or reloads), the G40 feels "smoother" shooting. The recoil impulse feels more like a "push-back" rather than a sharp upward torque.

My first 10mm I bought in 1986 and have been carrying one every since.

Now days, I carry my Wilson Combat in 10mm.

I think the question we all might have wished the OP asked was "if you could choose only one for [this purpose] what would it be", and since he didn't, we probably need to respond with what purpose is most important to each of us. Mine is very specifically carry..quite a bit different than the guy who doesn't care about carry at all, and would select The One based on taking rabbits at 25 yds, or maybe hogs at 50. :)

So, 'only one' means just that. Only one. G40 is a no-go. G29 is like "I'm gonna be okay even if it's a big guy tripped-out on meth" kind of day. If I see him first. Otherwise...who cares.

Actually, while I've never hunted in my life, the two scenarios might be somewhat similar. It always pays to see the other guy before he sees you, I gotta think.

NO...choosing for a specific purpose means you could have several...one for each purpose (i.e. one for hunting, one for carry, etc, etc). My question was based on the premise that you could choose ONLY ONE for your collection.

So, if you already have several 10mm pistols (or more than one), the question would be "Which one would you keep?"
