I mounted a holster to the back of my nighstand. Cant see it from the front or side but it keeps the XD very easily within reach. Didn't feel comfortable with it on top or in a draw.
I keep my M&P unholstered and chambered with safety on in the top drawer of my nightstand. Our hound dog howls when things go bump in the night so if he starts making noise, I grab that while my wife grabs the 12 gage.
Removing a pistol from a holster while lying in bed on your side is even more problematic than if you were standing. I'd prefer to be able to access mine with one hand under any and all circumstances where possible.
Just my thoughts on the matter.
mossberg 500 leaning with a full reload on the stock
s/a 5" 1911 un holstered with a reload and a light the drawer
wife's .38 spl with a reload on her bedpost in an open top holster
I have no kids, live alone.
Star M45 w/hollow points, no holster, next to my pillow. Surefire on night stand. Two yappy Shih Tsu dogs downstairs that bark their fool heads off at strangers.
keeping it in a drawer makes too much noise when you have to deploy it. those that advocate keeping it unholstered with a flashlight near by are most correct.
I would not advocate using the flashlight unless you have your weapon trained on your intended target. Using the flashlight will unnecessarly give away your position and may kill your night vision.
I keep it holstered, but it's the blackhawk paddle holster. And it balances it perfectly up in the air. So it's just the right height to snag up with clumsy night hands and easy to take off.
