Looking for a beach gun

I know it's fun to make fun of the topic, but, he's got a point. Go for a nice long walk on the beach someday, on a week day, with no one around, and all of a sudden a van full of 13's or 14's pull in, let the pitbulls out, off leash, and you are the only thing around to sniff. Life guard towers are boarded up, and, no help in sight.

What was a nice stroll on the beach with your girlfriend is now life and death, and, you hope the pitbull has more sense then it's drunk, high owner...

Recently took some high school students on public transit on a trip. Everything is fine, except for the passed out drunk, who was no problem until some lady woke him up.

Next was a 6'4" whacked out, still pretty good size, aryan brotherhood type, out of his mind, fighting with his girlfriend, high on meth. Had to get the kids off the train, and take the one behind it.

Stuff happens. Nothing wrong with being prepared.

I'm getting a kick out of reading some of these responses. I can see myself strolling down the beach with a 590 with an umbrella duct taped to the muzzle.

Huge thanks to the guys that are taking it seriously though. I'm getting lots of great idaes! :D I just think it's a fresh ccw challenge I haven't seen taken up anywhere online yet and tfl is rising to the challenge!

As for the guys who are saying to stop going to the beach, I understand your point but I have to disagree. Obviously if it were overrun with crime I would stop going there. It's not Harlem with sand, but there are more drugs and crime than there was a few years ago. There are certain beaches I wouldn't go to without a long gun and I just steer clear of them like you say.

A few years ago I was taking my girlfriend on a romantic moon-light walk on our favorite beach when a crazy, high/drunk homeless man started screaming obsceneties and yelling threats at us. Luckily he was SO high that he didn't pose that much of a threat. This happened at a VERY nice beach because she scoffed at the public beaches (God I'm glad to be rid of her :barf:) so I'm now of the opinion that I should always be prepared (and never date a woman who won't set foot on public sand, but that's neither here nor there).

Have you considered off-body carry? There are a lot of good backpacks and messenger-type bags out there from Blackhawk and the like... I know off-body carry is pretty much a next to last resort for most of us, but I don't think you'll be hiding any truly useful gun in your board shorts...

A crotch holster might work. Just make sure the safety is always on or you might lose the family jewels.

"Is that your 9mm or are you just glad to see me?"

You make a very good point. To be honest I hadn't seriously considered it, but that would open my options up a lot. I would still prefer to carry on my body, so much so that I would be willing to alter my clothes and carry a smaller gun to do it.

I know it's demanding a whole lot out of a gun, but as consumers I think we should demand a lot from our guns - that's what drives innovation in any industry.

I too love the beach. There are beaches here from San Diego to Pismo. But if the scum bags come then I'll find another beach. Why tempt fate? Find another beach...I'ts a whole lot better that the consequences of dealing with a shooting in public no matter how lawful you are. btw, You don't really have to worry about the salt water, the salt air will get to your gun immediately.

Beach gun?

 Get a Rohrbaugh .380

Stainless steel and lightweight and small. Very reliable and pretty accurate for a small package. It is a little pricey but well worth it in the long run.

If not, try the Ruger LCP. Small package, lightweight, polymer frame and priced right. Good luck.

well, its not so much "the beach" as it is your place you hang out. What if it was your local so and so place, and there was only one of them to go to.

maybe this is inflammatory, and probabbly not the right thread to address this, but in texas, we have pretty verbose castle doctrine laws, that has extended to cars and workplaces. and we have no duty to retreat, we can stand our ground.

now, say you go to your local hangout, and trouble arises, and you do indeed stand your ground.

maybe, the bg will think about a new hang out. but then again, maybe the bg will come get revenge.

i mean, if all decent law abiding folk keep their heads down, and avoid trouble spots, you're letting the BG win. and when they spread out and move to nicer and nicer areas cause they can unimpeded, what next?

iron bars over our windows?

Sounds like you live in California? As too your question what do you do with the gun while in the ocean? Leaving it on the beach in a crime infested area seems like a good way to be the object of a "stick up" by some creation who's just stolen your gun.

Yes, stuff happens. In front of a very expensive, exclusive resort we had problems with drug dealers being high, and peddling their stuff. I was reluctant to leave my girlfriend on the beach in certain deserted areas for this reason, and, in a couple we did leave.

We had to vacate a resort one time, at 2AM, pulled out by the CIA/Marines because we became targets for a bunch of druggies. Stuff happens...

Have you considered a flare gun?

I believe that they are made to be around and function properly around the saltwater. (Some have considered this as an approach to Brown bear defensive in Alaska; never found a volunteer to try it out, as far as I know no one has come back yet!)

Not only do you get a really impressive shot, but get the attention of the Coast Guard at the same time! YMMV

bigghoss

geeze I can't believe I got nothing from my last post

Did you want confirmation that dozens of people have permanently blocked out page two of this thread? They have absolutely no recollection of anything that occurred on that page.

Ah, ... what were you asking about again?

Sounds like you live in California?

Nope. Florida; we love our guns and our castle law! :D

I say again: I will not just move to another beach! Even the nice beaches have problems with crime just due to the fact that a beach brings in a lot of revenue and where you have a resource you get urbanization. What I'm saying is even if I wanted to (but I wouldn't on principle), there are no more safe, quaint beaches, no matter what the Florida Department of Tourism will tell you.
