Looking for a beach gun

I would opt for a gun with one of the more durable finishes in lieu of stainless. Stainless can and DOES rust, especially in a salt water environment. Whatever you choose will require CONSTANT daily upkeep to ensure no corrosion on the gun or ammunition. You will also need to change your wardrobe style to ensure you have the pockets necessary to carry the gun - there DOES have to be some effort on your part, given the parameters you have set.

1. Hire a bodyguard. 2. Avoid dead man's beach. 3. Secret compartment in your surfboard. 4. Get a big boonie canvas hat and hide something small in a pouch in the top of it. 5. Beach theme fanny pack. 6. Indian medicine pouch around the neck to ward off bullets.

What are some examples of "more durable" finishes?

Oh guys, just to clarify something: I do NOT plan on regularly submerging it, I just want something that could take an accidental submersion and the residual moisture & salt in the air around the beach.

I dunno, if the place you liked to go was all of a sudden overrun with crime, would you stop going to your favorite place out of fear of crime?

Yes, I would stop going there. No, it would not be "out of fear", it would be out of wanting to stay out of trouble, jail, court, lawyers fees, killing someone....

I would do most anything that it took to avoid the possibility of shooting someone.
There are other beaches. If there are not other beaches in a reasonable distance then there are other things to do.

I would not frequent a place WITH a gun if I would not frequent the same place WITHOUT a gun.

OK, maybe I am an idiot, but am I the only one who sees a much easier way to solve this problem?

Yes, yes I do

That's a duh. I'd be a dumbchit not to.

No way! I won't let the scumbags run me out of my hang-out; I'd just end up running away forever because there's always going to be scumbags. I'll just have something for them if they want to hurt me and my friends.

See above.

1. Hire a bodyguard. 2. Avoid dead man's beach.

#2 is sound advice. #1 has some merit but is null and void if you go with #2.

Well it sounds to me that it'd be best to abandon the whole .380 idea and start thinking about .38's.

If sand's involved, I sure wouldn't want an auto.

I'm gonna go ahead a say a j-frame would be my choice.

Sometimes the solution is so obvious we can't see it. It's the ocean. The ocean is where people use a spear gun to spear fish. Carry a spear gun.

Buy a Hi-Point. Folks will just think you're carrying a boat anchor.

Disclaimer - Really, I'm not a Hi-Point hater. It just came to mind when I saw the question. Please forgive my sense of humor (or lack of).

+1 :D

i'd like to suggest a squirt gun filled with pee. or mace. or a mixture of the two

Not sure which gun I'd recommend exactly. Probably something inexpensive and light weight. LCP or P3AT make sense. You could spend a little more $ and send the slide and barrel out for a more corrosion resistant finish perhaps.

As to carry methods, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Smart Carry yet. I've never used it personally, but this seems a situation that's sort of made for it.

I'm a beach bum of sorts, but the beach I frequent is in a high-crime area. I need to find a gun and carry system that will allow me to have some protection for my fun in the sun. I love my Sig but it's just unconcealable in board shorts and no shirt so I'm looking at my .380 options. My considerations:

- Could be exposed to saltwater. Not planning to take it on a swim, but stuff happens.
-Sand may be an issue.
-Needs to be concealed without a shirt.
-There could be problems with printing if I unexpectedly get wet.

I was looking at the Kel-tec and the LCP but the LCP is backordered into the next century. Any suggestions on a weapon for this role? What about some ideas for carry methods? I'm keeping an open mind about this one."

Another consideration: caliber should be able to stop a dog. Seems a lot of scumbags in our area pile into one van, with their pitbulls, and drive from Compton, etc. to the beach, paying 5 bucks for parking, with 10 gang members, and their dogs. Ok, I exaggerate a little, but not much.

Here is my plan. Use a beachy, long sleeve, surfer style shirt. When you want to get sun, you can tie it around your waist, hiding your gun. Your only real carry choice is Thunderwear, or whatever they call it now.

For shorts, board shorts aren't going to give you much concealability, so, shop carefully, buy big. I do have a couple pair that have front pockets, and, with a pocket holster, I can carry a baby beretta, or an ultra light S&W, or similar alloy gun. A better solution for shorts are cut offs, big and baggy. That's what the gang guys wear, and, they have a reason.

The other carry method is a fanny pack. That sort of yells gun, but, at least you have one.

Sand does get everywhere. I suspect your only safe bet is to put the gun in a plastic bag, and use a hammerless revolver, pulling the trigger through the bag..??? Adds to problems of actually using the gun, but, it's better then not having one.

If you use thunderwear, 340 S&W, using .357, at least 148 grain bullets. Think trying to stop a pitbull.

As for the folks that say don't go to that beach:
I've found some of the nicest isolated beaches aren't immune from having a bunch of gang punks pull up, and decide it's their beach, and, you are in the way. They get drunk, they let their dogs off leash, and, you have to hope their dogs have better sense then they do...
Can of pepper spray is an excellent idea, as well.

The spear gun idea has merit in another, rather weird way. You could bring your gear, and, you can put a bang stick on the end of the spear gun. That gives you an impact 12 gauge, legal, and, right out in the open. Check your state laws, however.
I've often thought about carrying one while surfing...

A few options

1) Even though you don't like it, finding another beach might still be your best bet. I don't swim where people are using chum for surf fishing; similarly, I don't voluntarily go hang out at places where human predators school.

2) If you aren't actually swimming, why board shorts? Get some loose, comfortable hiking shorts with big pockets, and increase your options in handgun size and type.

3) Fanny packs with integral holsters work well, if you insist on the board shorts; that, or

4) Buy board shorts with cargo pockets. I know Quicksilver makes some, because I bought a pair at REI. FWIW, my Ruger LCR fits just fine in the cargo pockets of Quicksilver board shorts. Good odds that your preferred shorts brand has at least one style out there with pockets.

Getting back to the original thought, as to other finishes, I was thinking about one of the ceramic finishes, or possibly something similar to Glock's tenifer

I like my Seecamp .32 in an old Jerry Ahern Down and Dirty groin holster with a 1981 vintage Charter Arms SS Undercover in the beach bag loaded with Fed. Nyclads.

That groin holster image is to counter the image that blinded my brain above of the dude with the 1911. :D

get a pump shotgun. get a tactical flash light holder that clamps to the mag. clamp it to your top barrel.. clamp a beach umbrella to the flash light holder. disguise the shotgun. plant the beach umbrella into the sand so everything is standing upright. when trouble hits, pull your shotgun off of your umbrella, and you are good to go.

I had my P220 done up in black ceramihide

by CCR Refinishing. They do some nice work.

That said, I haven't really exposed it to the elements since, so I can't say how well it works in a marine environment.

One thing I hadn't considered, though, before getting the new finish - ceramihide not only reduces friction on moving parts, but also on skin. I have to grip my slide harder now, to cycle the action. It's not impossible, by any means, but I have lost my grip in mid-cycle on one or two occasions.

Glocks double as life preservers dont they??? no seriously though I would go with any small revolver in a back pack... or make an umbrella shotgun....:D
