We get stronger only when the immigrants that come here do so in order to become Americans, and when said immigrants are willing AND able to make us stronger.

By the way, the above represent just a tiny fraction of the illegal immigrants whose crimes are so outrageous that they warrant attention from the F.B.I.

Not to mention a certain 19+ "immigrants" who slaughtered my countrymen wholesale on 9/11.    :barf:

We need LEGAL immigration in a very bad way RIGHT NOW. It is a partial solution to the baby boom social security problem that congress is ducking and dodging.

Even ILLEGAL immigration helps in that some of the illegals use fake ssn and have witholdings taken out, sent to the govt. Unfortunately they cost more in tax and other handouts than what they pay in. Been to an emergency room lately?

But we do need to stop ILLEGAL immigration. There are reasonable things we can do. For instance enforcing the laws that we have now. My daughter was in a two car collison with an illegal immigrant. The police show up and write him a ticket for failure to control his vehicle, for not having a drivers license and for not having insurance. It was obvious though that he was illegal as he had no identification and could not speak english at all. Did the policeman even attempt to check him out for the felony of being an illegal immigrant? No.

Here in Texas there is no one even trying to enforce the immigration laws we have except for the severly understaffed border patrol. I suggest that we start with the simple concept of having the police enforce the felony laws for awhile and forget writing tickets for 5mph over the speed limit.

We can significantly lower the number of illegal immigrants if we were to pull our troops back from Europe, where they no longer serve USA purposes at all, and have them patrol our borders instead. Given the terrorist war we are now in, that seems to be a proper utilization of troops that are otherwise just twiddling their thumbs and by the way enriching the countries where they are stationed.

Guess what? It will take a rather long time to clean up the mess that the roaches are feeding off of.

The roaches also breed while you are cleaning the mess.

The roaches, clever little devils, actually pull on the tablecloth and pull more food on the floor, which attract even more roaches to come in.

Try combating a problem that grows so long as it exists. When trying to solve an algebraic equation there is an order that you must go in to solve the problem. If you want to have a relaxed immigration policy you need to first destroy the doles, than allow the productive to come in.

In CA illegal Mexicans are a very powerful voting block, think about that, a group of people who are here illegally have a very big say on our national policy, including handouts for illegal Mexicans.

If you believe that we'll be just fine by allowing unlimited immigration and just trying to combat the dole I have some AZ beachfront property to sell you. You must first close the open door to prevent more roaches from getting in and then concentrate on cleaning up the spilt food.

People here who claim that the reaction to the huge illegal immigration problem is just code racism are using a Marxist tactic of not addressing the question and just attacking the charachter of the person making the point. Now people who see this problem are put on the defensive and spend their time trying to disprove a negative, that their not racists. The antis do this to us regarding gun control, trying to paint us as a bunch of white racists who only want guns so we can kill minorities.

This, like many other important subjects, has many overlaps. If people were not taxed to death - and that means not giving away billions from the public purse at home and o/s - more family couples wouldn't need to be working two or more jobs, and they would be more likely to have children.

But one thing for sure, we definately do not need legal immigrant unskilled laborers; we have plenty of that.

Illegal immigrants a powerful voting bloc?

In CA illegal Mexicans are a very powerful voting block, think about that, a group of people who are here illegally have a very big say on our national policy, including handouts for illegal Mexicans.

Huh? Since when are illegal immigrants allowed to vote? In fact, I believe that even legal immigrants may not vote - only US citizens. When was the last time you voted, glock?

So, I double-checked, just to be sure my memory hasn't failed me - you can find it on our immigration services bureau page of benefits of citizenship:
http://uscis.gov/graphics/citizenship/becoming.htm#Why Become a U.S. Citizen

...and I also checked on the California voting rights for state elections and referendums:
http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/votereg1.html

Where are you getting your information from, glock?

This next is not actually glock's mistake, but last week in a different thread, someone wrote that most western European immigrants are coming in on the basis of political asylum - well the actual number doing that is zero - it's not possible under our current immigration policy. I mean, you guys couldn't be more wrong, these aren't small errors - it's like your living on another planet.

Huh? Since when are illegal immigrants allowed to vote?
Since May 20th, 1995 when then President Clinton signed the "Motor Voter" act. Everyone getting a driver's license can opt to register to vote. Anyone legal, illegal, felon, etc. can register to vote at the DMV. They ask "Would you like to register to vote?" the person need only say "Si!", and *poof* they are a registered voter. In Washington state (as in most states I am aware of) any government employee caught asking a person about their immigration status is summarily fired. It is considered to be a violation of a person's rights to inquire as to their immigration status. As if anyone in the country didn't know this.

Tens of thousands of illegals voted in WA state last year, along with thousands of known felons. It was even acknowledged in open court.

Not to mention a few people who had been buried several months before their absentee ballots were mailed out. Pretty neat huh?

What a laugh. A person only needs to get on a plane and make it into one of our airports. Then they need only declare that they are seeking asylum; then (if they aren't on a terrorist watch list) they are given a hearing date. They are then released on their own recognizance.

One entry found for recognizance.

Main Entry: re·cog·ni·zance
Pronunciation: ri-'käg-n&-z&n(t)s, -'kä-n&-
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, alteration of reconissaunce, from Middle French reconoissance recognition, from reconoistre to recognize
1 a : an obligation of record entered into before a court or magistrate requiring the performance of an act (as appearance in court) usually under penalty of a money forfeiture <released on his own recognizance> b : the sum liable to forfeiture upon such an obligation
2 archaic : TOKEN, PLEDGE

Guess how many show up for their hearing? Guess how much money they forfeit for not showing up?

I mean, you guys couldn't be more wrong, these aren't small errors - it's like your living on another planet.
LMFAO

Even small communities like the one I live in- 1500 MILES FROM THE MEXICAN BORDER - contain Hispanic slums, and I'm the one on another planet. Don't I wish. I'll take the planet without the third world ghetto please. :barf:

So Fred - you seem to have a good sense of humor. Why don't you look on the Immigration Department's website, and tell me how many refugee visa applications were approved from Western Europe in 2003 (the last year available)? That's the statement that I made that you found laughable - then come back, and tell us all what you find - and don't change the subject - be a man, and tell us what you find.

Perhaps it would be best to allow more immigrants to enter the country legally to become citizens and cut back on the number of work visas issued. Possibly, money sent back to the country of a work visa immigrant could be taxed. At the same time, cut back on welfare programs. This would discourage the one-foot-in-one-country-one-foot-in-the-other kind of thing we see so much today. Basically, if you're going to enter the country and undercut other workers, bring your family in and try to support them at the $8 an hour you're willing to work for.

To jammer six: I understand this is not neccessarily a nationwide problem, as immigrants in WA are working for union wages. In FL, there is a large number of people here on work visas (or possibly illegal) who tend to work cheap. And according to what I've read in the newspapers we are not alone.

Policing the borders could use improvement, and sending illegals back whenever they have a scrape with law enforcement is also a must. I don't see how anyone could argue that.

The influx of immigrants into the country has to be controlled, just like any other economic factor, and I don't see how anyone could argue against that either.

Aliens

MK;
You seem to have missed the point, the American people passed certain laws, anyone who violates them are violating the will of the American people.
The violators are criminal alien invaders.
I really do not understand how this fact seems to escape so many people.

Without even looking I can tell you that the answer is most likely none at all. That's the whole point. They come here and they stay here illegally.

See?

If they had visas I wouldn't have a problem with them being here, but since America's border laws go unenforced they come here illegally. The Libertarian answer to the uncontrolled incursion would be to eliminate the unenforced laws, which is the whole point of this thread.
State Action
In 2001, California and Texas were the first states to enact legislation allowing in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants. New York and Utah followed suit in 2002. In 2003 and 2004, Washington, Oklahoma, Illinois and Kansas enacted similar legislation. Legislators in 18 states (Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kansas, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, & Wisconsin) have debated bills with comparable criteria for eligibility. The enacted state legislation generally requires that students have resided in the state for three years, graduated from a state high school, received notification of acceptance to a public college or university and signed an affidavit stating they will file for legal immigration status.

The Arizona and Virginia legislatures introduced bills to provide in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants and to restrict illegal foreign nationals from attending a public university or college. Both bills are still pending in the Arizona legislature. Virginia's Governor Warner vetoed House Bill 2239 this past April, which would have prohibited any post-secondary education benefit including in-state tuition for any undocumented immigrant. Similar legislation is also pending in the Alaska legislature.

Before you take offense at what I find laughable you might consider that third world illiterates figure out how to come here, deal dope, vote, collect welfare, bankrupt hospitals with their demands for free medical care, get their kids educated for free (including lobbying for, and getting, state resident college tuition for their illegal immigrant children) and somehow you manage to miss it all. Kind of astounding really. More tragic than funny.

Illegal aliens - cost versus benefit?

So, looking only at illegal immigrants, who do not pay taxes, one way of looking at this is a cost-benefit analysis.

There are the costs:
- Increased load on social welfare programs intended for taxpayers
- Increased numbers at least of crime indicidents
- Others???

There are the benefits:
- Lower cost domestic labor for agriculture and business
- Others???

And, importantly, can anyone put any reliable figures on these? What percentage of illegals are actually working? What percentage are committing crimes? Drawing entitlement benefits? How do these percentages compare with those found for citizens and legal aliens? Without knowing these answers, I don't think that anyone can really say whether illegal immigration is good or bad for the country.

Dramatic increases in a communicable disease (tuberculosis) that had been, for all intents and purposes, nearly eradicated within the lower 48 states.

Dramatic increase in the organizational capabilities of the (violent) criminal (all illegal aliens are by definiton criminals) element contained within the subject group(s). The virulent spread of M13 and other highly organized and motivated gangs.
And, importantly, can anyone put any reliable figures on these?
Hmmm... let's see... the June 2005 FBI wanted list has 28 people on it - 11 of them are listed as Mexican nationals.

Police commanders may not want to discuss, much less respond to, the illegal-alien crisis, but its magnitude for law enforcement is startling. Some examples:

• In Los Angeles, 95 percent of all outstanding warrants for homicide (which total 1,200 to 1,500) target illegal aliens. Up to two-thirds of all fugitive felony warrants (17,000) are for illegal aliens.

• A confidential California Department of Justice study reported in 1995 that 60 percent of the 20,000-strong 18th Street Gang in southern California is illegal; police officers say the proportion is actually much greater. The bloody gang collaborates with the Mexican Mafia, the dominant force in California prisons, on complex drug-distribution schemes, extortion, and drive-by assassinations, and commits an assault or robbery every day in L.A. County. The gang has grown dramatically over the last two decades by recruiting recently arrived youngsters, most of them illegal, from Central America and Mexico.

• The leadership of the Columbia Lil’ Cycos gang, which uses murder and racketeering to control the drug market around L.A.’s MacArthur Park, was about 60 percent illegal in 2002, says former assistant U.S. attorney Luis Li. Francisco Martinez, a Mexican Mafia member and an illegal alien, controlled the gang from prison, while serving time for felonious reentry following deportation.

Not to mention a little thing called 9/11 in which 3,000 Americans were anihilated because some people don't give a damn about what kind of vermin are let into this country as long as it doesn't skew the bottom line of their "cost-benefit analysis". :barf:

There's another aspect to this, called infectious diseases. TB and a host of other bad news is widespread in many countries like Mexico. Unless the flow of illegal migrants is stopped, and legal immigrants are given a thorough and uncompromized screening, those diseases are going to have an increasing impact on all of us.
