Knives. What do you cary?

Smith and Wesson 'Extreme Ops' automatic w/serrated tanto point.

or...

Cold Steel 'Ti-Lite' with "Zytel" handle. 4" blade.

Both are formidable weapons as well as being generally handy for practical purposes. I can whip out my Ti-Lite faster than I can the automatic (although, I've carried the Ti-Lite a lot more).

I carry a cheap little clip-on S&W knife. I think it says "Gold Issue" on it. It's got two blades, one just edged and one serrated. Works great for what I need it for... cutting boxes or whatever. Cheap but it still works great and has a decent edge.

I'm surrounded by little Vics in my car, home and on the keyring.

:o These are toys in number and expense compared to the ridiculous collection of Busse/Swamp Rat fixed blades I own. I know.. I have a problem. I'll see you again at Blade 2007 in Atlanta this June.

Luckily here in oregon we can buy, own, and carry full autos as long as we do not fully conceal them. meaning we have to have them visible above the top of our pocket.

Therefore, when dressed nicely, I carry a Pro-Tech Godfather.

When working I carry a Kershaw Blur.

I have a Victorinox Officer Swiss Armey Knife. Just started carrying a small WInchester version of the Leatherman, though. Its a bit smaller when folded up than the swiss army knife.

I carry this POS at work. It's held a nice edge over the years, and I don't feel bad beating the snot out of it. When I changed the tile in my bathroom, I actually used it to scrape every last bit of caulking from my bathroom's baseboards and tub. It still works, but my hand was sore.

And thanks to PlayboyPenguin's help during my Christmas shopping, I was "forced" to pick up a Kershaw Leek for when I don't need a utilitarian knife. I bought one for my future sister-in-law, and when I fell in love with it, I immediately ordered one for me.

Usually I wear slacks to work , so my Kershaw Scallion works great. When I'm wearing jeans, its either my Benchmade Apparation or my Kershaw Blur.

A Swiss Army knife with Scissors, file, eyeglass screwdriver, small straight slot screwdriver, sewing awl, bottle opener, wire stripper, tooth pick, tweezers and a 1.75" blade. It dangles from my key chain. It's a lot more practical than a single bladed "Tacticool" knife.

tegemu,

Practicality is quite individual, what is practical for you may very well not be practical for me.

I have skinned and boned numerous deer to 200# and hogs to 400# with my Spyderco Military some times, as many as 3 separate animals before returning home (the knife did not require sharpening in between). For me and what I like to do that is practical.

You are welcome to try that with your 1.75 inch Swiss Arm knife. What is practical for you is not practical for me.

I have fixed dinner at camp on numerous occasions with my knife. It works well for me.

:) tee hee. You selling any swamp rats? I've been wanting one. I have roughly 9 more fixed blade knives than I "need" (i.e. I have about 10), but dangit, I like them too for some reason. I don't have any really good ones though like a swamp rat or busse or whathaveyou. Just so-so stuff like the air force pilot's knife, the glock field knife, sog seal pup, etc.

Whan im n duty, I carry a KaBar TDI PE weak side crossdraw behind my mag pouch, a Benchmade Griptillain weak side pocket, and a CRKY MyTighe or Ryan strong side rear pocket. Off duty, depending on dress, I carry anyhting from a CRKT MyTighe, Spyderco Dragonfly, SOG JetEdge, CRKT M1, or a Case Russlock. I always carry two minimum.

My little bunch

Gerber folding hunter, has field dressed many an animal.

Solingen folder that I bought up in British Columbia 40-some years ago. It's actually sharp enough to shave with if I'm careful.

Italian stilleto switchblade that's best for impressing your friends when cutting the end off of a nice cigar.

Leatherman. Nuff said.

The little one with the blue handle I won as a door prize at the range one day. Good for opening boxes and envelopes.

The really big ones are in the kitchen drawer and used for cooking! :)

Case

Carry old Case pocket knife I have had since I was a boy, given to me by my Grandfather when I went started school. Things sure have changed.

I considered posting this several times. You see, the knives I listed earlier are the ones I carry, but they're not my favorite. My favorite is also the one I'm the most proud of. I have good reason to be, but I would never, ever carry this one.

Why? Because this knife was hand made by my father as a gift to his father.

Dad was a tool maker for a major steel mill, and this knife is solid steel. The handle was cast around the blade, which was made from a saw blade used to cut red hot steel billets when they came out of the furnace. It's the hardest steel I've ever seen.

But this wasn't just any saw blade. Along with a personal history, this knife is a tiny bit of world history as well. Dad didn't know it at the time, but the billets that blade cut were part of an order for the Manhattan Project.

(Sorry the pics aren't better, but I'm still trying to figure out this fancy new DSLR camera I bought last month :D )

Capt. Charlie--

I would never carry that one, either. That's a family heirloom and you have the history behind it. If there was ever one that should be a safe queen, that's it.
