Is RUGER the Rodney Dangerfield of firearm companies...they get no respect...

It still scrolls that hideous disclaimer on the barrels, greatly detracting from the looks.
That's put there as the direct result of a lawsuit that Ruger lost in which they were forced to pay $422K to a person who accidentally shot himself with a Ruger he had stolen.

Second, Ruger bailed out of the Security- and Speed-Six line of revolvers for the simple (and only) reason being that S&W did it!
Bill Ruger Sr., is widely reported has having said that the reason Ruger stopped making the Security/Speed line was because they couldn't produce the guns at a profit.
... the GPs aren't as accurate as the S&W 686s!...the Rugers do not compete well with either the Python or the 686. They're uglier and not as accurate.
In the Gun Digest book of Handgun Reloading, Grennell and Clapp did a rather extensive test of a huge number of handloads using the Ransom rest.

They tested 30 different guns in calibers ranging from .380 up to .45 Colt. 11 guns by S&W and 6 guns from Colt were tested including a S&W 586 and a Colt Python.

The smallest group shot by any of the 30 guns in the testing was shot using the Ruger GP100 they tested. It was 0.472"--6 shots, at 25 yards using a Ransom Rest. In all fairness, the 586 and the Python weren't far behind, turning in their best groups of 0.550" for the Python and 0.525" for the 586.

The largest average group for the GP100 was 2.5". The five largest average groups for the Python were 5", 5", 3.5", 3" & 3". For the 586, 3.75", 3.5", 3.5", 3.5" and 3".

The GP100 shot 1" average groups or smaller with 13 of the handloads tested. The 586 shot 1" average groups or smaller with 3 of the handloads tested. The Python's smallest average group with any of the handloads tested was 1.25"

There may be some areas where the GP100 can't match up to the Python and the 586/686, but accuracy doesn't seem to be one of them.
Ruger has chosen to forgo the military route and build guns for the working man...
In all fairness, Ruger has tried for several military contracts and has simply not been very successful in that arena.

Here is my new to me Ruger MK II 22/45, I love it and I bought it for 149.99 plus tax.

For a company that gets no respect it sure gets its share of space in all the firearms magazines - ads and articles - and almost always positive. For the money their guns are hard to beat. And they do sell well from what I have seen and heard. For example the LCPs seem to always be gone when I do feel like checking one out. I have had Rugers in my wish list right from the start but something else seems to always be what I buy. Maybe next time.

I think at pretty much every level of firearm there is a better, sexier gun that can be had for not that much more so they don't make the top of many lists. Also many of their guns have maybe a little too much in the way of safety features which turn many gun officiandos off. But they primarily market their guns to the civilian population which like those features.

If you are on a budget, just want a gun that will do the job for you and aren't a collector Ruger has a gun that will work for you. I expect a lot of the people who buy Rugers fit that bill.

Amazing the BS people put up here without providing facts. Thanks John. I love my Ruger's.

And next, an illiterate criminal will do the same, and sue because there are not pictures explaining the warning......

Regarding Ruger handguns that I have shot:

1) Dad's Single Six
2) Friend's .357
3) Other friend's 22/45
4) Yet, another friend's SR1911

.. they did nothing wrong and everything right. Mucho respect from me.

Ruger....So ugly only a wife could love it!
She loves it so much she said "Hey, where you going with my gun?" as I was taking it outside to take it's picture. I told her I was only going to take a picture of it. She said "OK but don't keep it long, it's mine!" Geez I guess I'll have to buy my own.

I would also have to say their well respected firearms.
I have a LCP, 10/22,and Mini 30 and when my LGS gets a SR1911 I'll grab it also!!( I don't have any of their revolvers, mine are all Colts and Smith & Wessons)

Ruger isn't the "sexy", tacticool, mall-ninja, zombie slayer gun manufacturer. There are no Ruger models in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Battlefield 3 or Counterstrike (video games).
People who care about fashion and mall-ninja status choose Glock or H&K because "it shoots great in Call of Duty".
:)
If Ruger did a zombie ad campaign tie in with Hornaday ammo and got a gun into the next big Playstation hit, they'd be set... ;)

I love my Rugers, they've been dead nuts reliable. I'll be adding more to the collection as money allows.

I have to say, "no." Even diehard fans of other companies often concede that Ruger makes a quality gun at a reasonable price. They may even say things like:
  • It's ugly;
  • It's not a target gun; or
  • It has all that lawyerspeak on the side;
but all of that is often followed with
  • but the Ruger is built like a tank;
  • but the Ruger will eat any ammo known to Man; or
  • but the Ruger is covered by some of the best CS in the business.

Mind you, I'm not knocking the other companies to which the aforementioned diehard fans are loyal. Are there diehards who hate Ruger? Sure, but that can be said for any manufacturer. As for me, I like 'em. I guess I like a little ugly in my guns. ;)

If their ksp-242-8 .22 revolver was as good as the S&W 617 I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

I wish I could see both in a Ransom rest test, but from what I've heard the 617 has better lockup and better accuracy.

When people talk about 9mm revolvers - the Rugers are probably the most highly thought of nine out there.

People who own the 9mm Speed Six love it, and people who own the SP101 in 9mm think they're fantastic.

I'm not saying the Smiths were bad - but I always hear high praise for the Ruger nine revolvers.

Seems they already had that idea:

Not sure if it's in a video game yet....

The SR9

I can't help but think that if the Soviets had decided to build a copy of the Caracal - the SR9 would be it.
Ha! The Caracal is itself a knock-off the Steyr M-9 ..... designed by the same guy, Wilhelm Bubbits.

I think we send enough money to the Middle East.... I'm not at all interested in buying their guns, too.....

ruger just reported record bookings for first quarter 2012. there so busy they have stopped taking orders for new guns. i'd say there getting all the respect they need.

1911

You can't get these around here. One guy I met a the gun shop had one on order for 7 months. The shop got 6 in and he finally got his. I can tell you one thing. This new 1911 is getting a lot of respect around here.
