Is RUGER the Rodney Dangerfield of firearm companies...they get no respect...

"Really? I see the following discussed, used, for sale in stores, and posted about (mostly with respect) all the time:
Ruger M77 Hawkeye
10/22
Mini-14
LCP
LC9
SR1911 (many people are desperate to get their hands on these)
Mark II 22/45
LCR
SP101
GP100
Redhawk
Super Redhawk
Single-Six
Security Six (not in production anymore)Blackhawk
Super Blackhawk
Vaquero
So that is what? About 3/4 of their guns... What is the problem exactly?"

+1...However, although I have not read all responses word-for-word yet, I think in some areas the OP may be correct, in others not...that a lot of folks respect and like a wide variety of Rugers, and say so regularly.. I think it's true that the SR9, 9c, 40 and 40c, for instance, are not (as) automatically on "everybodys'" tongues when Wondernines--there's a term that'll date me--etc, are mentioned...though they should be IMHO. As Arental lists above, Ruger's single actions are fabulous with many adherents. SP101's have a great rep. The old reliable Security Six, and its compact variant Speed Six, has few equals--a "stronger K" if you will (and I have and love Ks). Similarly, nearly everyone has a 10-22, Mk II, etc, at least in their fondly-recalled past. There's absolutely nothing wrong with an M77 as a solid, well finished hunting rifle, and so forth.

So, back to the OP, if he is not intimating Ruger isn't worthy, but suggesting a lot of people don't give Ruger its due *even* if it is, uh, due, ...in many instances, I think he might be quite right. If he or others are suggesting more respect is not deserved, with some few exceptions, I think wrong.

Rugers are respected by those that matter. Don't worry about those that have no respect for Ruger. Their opinions are not worthy of consideration.

My favorite Ruger is the SR9c.

You should get out more. :D

Ruger used to be Rodney Dangerfield, but gets plenty of respect now, and rightly so. Their revolvers are built like tanks. Taurus is Rodney Dangerfield now. :D

So Im wondering if Ruger is the Rodney Dangerfield of firearm companies? It simply gets no respect.

I think that it's OBVIOUS CAPTAIN That you haven't read many posts!!! Ruger is one of the most often suggested firearms companies when someone asks for advice on a new purchase.

They may not get a lot of respect, but people buy a lot of them.

If we look at only domestically manufactured firearms, about one in every six guns sold is a Ruger. If you look at imports and domestic manufacturing combined, Ruger sales account for about one in every 8 or 9 guns sold in the U.S.

(Based on 2009/2010 figures from the BATF.)

In online forums, no one ever posts a picture of their Ruger

My first thought was that.... well, stock rugers are not all that pretty. They are not really meant to be looked at and fussed over. They are working man's guns......

My next thought was that I'd seen plenty of pics of custom grips for ruger wheelguns on here..... and I see plenty of Rugers out and about..... you need to get out more, I guess.

I have several Ruger firearms, and own more of them than any other single manufacturer....... My nest handgun pruchase will be a Ruger (sR1911) .... I doubt I will be posting pix of them though ..... I know what they look like, and I don't need y'all to get all jealous ......

As for no LEO's carrying them, I saw one tonight in a CCSO Deputy's duty rig .....

Well I did my part to help Ruger sell 1,000,000 guns for the NRA, let's see last year I purchased a: LC9, SR9, SR9c, MKIII 22/45, and a 10/22. Hopefully will be adding an SR1911 and an SR556 later this year if they ever get in stock. I think they get plenty of respect, ever watch Midway USAs Wednesday night at the range on Outdoor Channel, chocked full of Ruger commercials. All of my Rugers have been 100% problem free, oh and bought an LCP at the end of 2010 at Cheaper than Dirt Guns Black Friday Special, almost 200 people in line for that one.

not sure where your looking, but im seeing the complete opposite. I have been seeing Ruger's all over the place lately and been hearing about Ruger all the time this year. They are probably the most popular firearm companies this year. Ive never owned or thought about owning a Ruger before but i just bought 2 Rugers in the past month. Bought a 10/22 and finally found a SR1911 a few days ago.

Ruger Own Worst Enemy

Ruger does nothing to enhance its reputation among shooters. It still scrolls that hideous disclaimer on the barrels, greatly detracting from the looks.

Second, Ruger bailed out of the Security- and Speed-Six line of revolvers for the simple (and only) reason being that S&W did it! The guns were plenty strong before they went to the GP-100s, and the GPs aren't as accurate as the S&W 686s! The heavy full lug barrels make the frames heavy and difficult to carry and use. The lugs make it pretty much a range gun and very poor for carrying into the wilderness and hiking/camping. S&W made their 686s to compete accuracy-wise with the Colt Pythons, and they do compete well; however, the Rugers do not compete well with either the Python or the 686. They're uglier and not as accurate. The old Security-Sixes were outstanding trail and camping guns; they're also wonderful hunting guns. In my opinion there was little reason to make them heavier and more cumbersome.

The legal scrolling just makes things worse. There's no way I'd take a Ruger GP-100 over a Smith 686. In my view, Ruger is its own worst enemy.

Bill Jordan wanted a gun that was smaller and easier to carry.
Unfortunately, Ruger thinks making their guns heavier and more
cumbersome was the way to go. The Security-Six wasn't a gun
that needed fixing.

All the harping about "ugly" ...... pretty is as pretty does, and a GP100 will still be doing long after the colt has quit......

I have a colt revolver ....I love it, but I am afraid to shoot it, as parts are made of Unobtainium.

And the complaints about a heavy large frame revolver? They mitigate recoil, so you can shoot longer .... and if it's too heavy for you to hold up, then maybe you need to hit the weights, champ....

Many people only give respect to the guns used by our military. Ruger has chosen to forgo the military route and build guns for the working man that wants a solid hunting rifle, a reliable handgun, or a great .22 to introduce shooting sports to their children. Ruger hasn't sold out to the "mil spec", everything must be black with a quad rail, and overly priced business and marketing plan.

I learned to shoot on a Ruger mkii, I own a 10/22, and my first 1911 will be the SR1911. I've been a fan since my first round and I'll be a supported til my last.

My custom 10/22, it uses the original trigger and receiver I shot 20 years ago.

I'D much rather be out shooting my RUGERS, than sitting at home shinning or taken pictures of my Smith or Colt so they dont marked up.

My Rugers are tools not play prettys or talking points.:p
