If you had to go in first, what kind of handgun would you use?

USP 9mm w/ some sort of red dot sight. My reasoning...a dot per target plus alot of rounds in the 1st mag just in case.

(PS Why would you want the can on the SOCOM, striderteen? On an entry team, you'd be wearing earplugs and, depending on budget, possibly radio headsets. The noise ain't gonna bother you, but it will bother the bad guy, which is just fine.)

Note that I'm not a SWAT guy or anything remotely close to that..

But why would you wear earplugs if you could use a suppressor? Wouldn't you want to be able to hear, say, someone breathing heavily in nervousness around a corner, or a badguy moving? Hearing's an essential part of situational awareness.. not to mention hearing teammates. I'm not convinced that a regular radio earbud would do much to muffle any sounds either..

And further, a suppressor would improve the stealthiness of the team - it's a lot easier to hear a unsuppressed gun than a suppressed one.. and I suppose it'd also keep the neighbors next door from coming out and invesigating too.

That's my reasoning.

I'd want the same gun I use when I play Rogue Spear, or Half Life, and the same gun I draw pictures of on my Science folder, and the same gun I have a picture of in my locker, and the same gun I'm gonna own when I'm 21 and join the Navy Seals for real!

:D

Hemicuda,
That was from the movie "Pulp Fiction", correct?

Funny how my memory works; when I need some recollection, I'm up S-creek, but if I'm casually thinking of something, presto!

House clearing, I would go with a carbine of some sort, M16/M4 or possibly an MP5, then have an HK USP or 1911 as backup.

As stated previously, a handgun is a defensive weapon and should be used as such or as a backup in the scenario described.

Foxy,

And further, a suppressor would improve the stealthiness of the team -

Stealthiness may be good in a game of Rogue Spear, but is quite counterproductive in a dynamic entry. Once the shooting starts, you want as much noise and pyrotechnics as possible.

Look at some real ops: the Israeli paras at Entebbi, GSG-9 at Mogadishu, the SAS at Princes Gate; not a lot of silencers in use. (Kinda moot anyway, since flashbangs make a lot of noise...)\

Onslaught,

I'd want the same gun I use when I play Rogue Spear, or Half Life, and the same gun I draw pictures of on my Science folder, and the same gun I have a picture of in my locker, and the same gun I'm gonna own when I'm 21 and join the Navy Seals for real!

A 9mm SIG P-226?

Remington 870 Express Super-Mag w/ 8-rd extension & pistol grip, and plenty of Buck! Nothing else will come as close to ensuring that you walk out under your own power, which I assume UTVols would want to do.;)

Handgun ONLY?? Don't own one (yet) but I'd agree w/ Ala Dan [Sig 220], based on my experience so far with my new 229 in .40.

Side note: I think some company (??) is now making an "active" earplug-type hearing protector that actually AMPLIFIES small and/or high-pitched sounds (leaf or twig crunch, safety clicking off) while instantaneously canceling loud "booms". Seems like I saw these advertised somewhere for a little north of $200.

I'm sure if these are in fact available commercially, most good-sized PDs or at least their "SWAT" units would have at least these if not something better available. Think Bose, and their noise-canceling headphones - supposedly all but eliminate aircraft engine noise while enabling normal conversation.

Side note to the side note: there are so many new PC acronyms being used to describe "SWAT" teams it's hard to keep up with them all!!  :)

>>>What special operations force do you have in mind? The SOCOM was designed specifically for the United States Special Operations Command (i.e., Army Rangers, Navy SEALS, etc.) and is the only gun I know of purpose-built for special operations usage as an offensive weapon.

...and that is why I prefaced my message with, "Assuming it had to be a service handgun instead of an M4 Carbine or any other short rifle"

I was thinking of a unit from Fort Bragg.

What weapon

I have done just this thing many times. I am now retired but spent many years on SWAT and was a SWAT k-9 handler. When you have a K-9 you really only have one hand. I carried a Sig 220 as my primary weapon. On going in I would use a SIG 226. The reason is I wanted fire power and wanted the lighter recoil because of the possiblity of having to shoot one-handed. But I still carried the 220. If I ever had to reload or a malfunction I would drop the 226 and use the 220. My 226 had an extended Sig Mag, and a SureFire Light system. Hope this helps you.

If you are gonna use the SOCOM, with the suppressor, please dont forget these vital accessories:

--Black Ninja Suit, made of course out of high speed, low drag material.
--Those special boots that let ya climb walls effortlessly.
--Gargoyles
--The biggest, nastiest looking, most serrated Spyderco you can find; if none is available, then get that replica Rambo knife they sell at gun shows.
--A few throwing stars, for when things really hit the fan.

I am a bit surprised by so many suggestions to use sound supressors. If I have to enter the snake's nest, I want to create as much noise, light, commotion, and distraction as I possibly can. I want the opponent to be overwhelmed and freaked out when I open fire. If I could I would probably have a few flash grenades thrown in first, and then have a barrage of noise from all directions. Then I would throw in some noise-making, deafening whatchamathingies. If I could, I would also want to have the noisiest weapon on the face of the earth. I would want it to make hellish screams as I fire it. Maybe there is some kind of an SMG round that accomplishes that, I don't know (kind of like a tracer, except producing satanic noises) that could be inserted every 5 normal rounds. Or maybe there is something that kind of looks like a supressor, but is in reality an exhaust-gas-operated noise contraption. I would want the level of noise to physically hurt and disorient.

In short, I do not want them calm and composed, I want them hysterical.
