If you had to go in first, what kind of handgun would you use?

Any automatic and price is not that big of a factor. I was watching them clear a house on the Discovery chanel tonight and it got me thinking. My choice is probably the HK USP Tactical. Mostly because I have the most experience with it and believe in its performance more so than my other handguns. It functions and it can shoot the wings off a fly.

I'd definately choose my powerful Davis P380 with awesome chrome finish and high-capacity 5 round magazine, with a pocket-full of spare bullets, of course!

one of those modified fully auto glocks with a 30 round extended clip.

just stick my arm and let it rip, then repeat. :)

A pistol is a defensive weapon.

When going in an unknown house/office/fortress, BG's are expected within, and they are expected to be armed and willing to resist. A SMG/Shotgun/Carbine is a more appropriate wepon for this mission, with the pistol as back-up in case the primary arm goes down.

That said, my pistol of choice would be a P226 in .40, or a fine 1911 in .45, deployed in a role compatable with the mission.

Smith & Wesson Model 19, .357 Mag.

If I HAD to choose a semi-auto :( I'd take either an HK P7M13 or a good old Colt 1911-style.

Assuming it had to be a service handgun instead of an M4 Carbine or any other short rifle, I'd use what "Special Operations Forces" like to use - SIG P220.

What special operations force do you have in mind? The SOCOM was designed specifically for the United States Special Operations Command (i.e., Army Rangers, Navy SEALS, etc.) and is the only gun I know of purpose-built for special operations usage as an offensive weapon.

striderteen,

Yes, the Mk23 was built for SOCOM.

Except none of them really seem to like it. They refer to it as "the crew-served handgun". SEALs still seem to use P-226's, Army units are most frequently seen with plain vanilla M9's and M11's, and Force Recon has 1911's.

USMC MEU/SOC, FBI HRT, LAPD SWAT, among others, all seem to be onto something. I believe I'd take my Springfield Professional..... as backup to a real gun. ;)

(PS Why would you want the can on the SOCOM, striderteen? On an entry team, you'd be wearing earplugs and, depending on budget, possibly radio headsets. The noise ain't gonna bother you, but it will bother the bad guy, which is just fine.)

I would opt for a very high quality, full-size 1911A1 or .357 magnum revolver. Simply stated, I would want an extremely accurate and flawlessly reliable handgun that has a very high probability of fast, single shot incapacitation.

IMHO, the above handguns combined with top quality (HydraShok or Golden Saber) 230 or 158 grain rounds (respectively) are an ideal "system" for this scenario.

5.5" 41 Redhawk, 250g FMJ-FP.
Shoot through walls, BG's, etc.

Blast and flash alone effective distraction.

If I'm going in first, the "Holy Hand Grenade" of course. lol

Bro. Maynard:
And Saint Attila raised the Holy Hand Grenade up on high saying, "Oh Lord, Bless us this Holy Hand Grenade, and with it smash our enemies to tiny bits." And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs, and stoats, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and lima bean-
High Priest:
Skip a bit, brother.
Bro. Maynard:
And then the Lord spake, saying: "First, shalt thou take out the holy pin. Then shalt thou count to three. No more,no less. "Three" shall be the number of the counting, and the number of the counting shall be three. "Four" shalt thou
not count, and neither count thou two, execpting that thou then goest on to three. Five is RIGHT OUT. Once the number three, being the third number be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade to-wards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuffit. Amen.:D :D

My only choice,

would be the famed, world class Sig-Sauer P220 .45ACP.

My own custom Colt Delta Elite, because I know it works. Also, I get to wear earplugs and the bad guys don't, so worst-case I'll at least deafen them. :D

Once again, my IPSC bias comes out.

Given that the original question asked about handgun choice, an IPSC race gun (1911, ported, comped., dot sight, 28 rounds) chambered in 9x23 or .38 Supercomp (both give .357 mag. ballistics, e.g., 125 grn @ 1450 fps).

This is a situation where you want to be able to put multiple hits on multiple targets as quickly and as accurately as possible. The empirical evidence is clear - an IPSC race gun does this better than any other.

An interesting anecdote - one of the IPSC big dogs, I think it was Matt Mclearn, was doing some training with the FBI HRT. Exercise was house/room clearing. HRT used MP-5's, Mclearn used his IPSC gun, and totally dominated the exercise.

Now, to be fair, Matt is a world class shooter. But is nice to see what the guns can do.

A sawed off 12 Ga pumpgun... with a pistolgrip/fullstock combo... (AR-15 style)

and lotsa buckshot!

to quote a die-hard movie "When you absolutely, Positively got to kill every m-er f-er in the room"

(He was referring to an AK, but a 12 ga. pump works well too!)
