How much ammo do you carry daily

7+1 with 1-2 10 round mags, depending on what I'm wearing / how lazy I'm feeling. So 18 or 28 rounds of .45 ACP.

If your day is bad enough that you have to pull your gun; why assume everything else will go perfectly?

No, this is real, there is this thing in a old magazine I read

I actually don't doubt the existence of the thing. My question is, short of a combat situation, why would anyone carry that much weight around?

I do carry an extra 7 or 8 round mag (depending on what I'm carrying that day) in my pocket when I go downtown, in case of malfunctions mainly.

100+ in vehicle

All year long? doesnt that damage the ammo, how hot does it get? we peak 100f+ sometimes, then in a car its like more. Doesn't the ammo go off after 120f?

Optimist: A man with a revolver and speed strips.

I carry a spare magazine, not because I think I'll need 30+ rounds but because I might need two, and a magazine failure is the most likely failure in a semi-auto.

The 3x3x3 Rule....

In general, I follow what I call the 3x3x3 Rule;
That most ARMED CITIZEN(not armed security, law enforcement, corrections, etc) or concealed license holder(s) will have a lethal force incident with 3 rounds fired total, at 3 feet or less, in approx 3 seconds.
Most violent attacks are over in a few seconds and either the subject will flee or be seriously wounded/killed. This does not mean you(as a license holder or gun owner) should only carry a 5-6 shot revolver or 15/16 round semi auto pistol w/o any spare ammunition.
You do not need 33rd Glock magazines or 4 magazine holders like the Galco add-on or Tuff Products carrier either. ;)
I'd feel more prepared knowing I could do a "tactical reload" or recharge my carry gun in a critical incident(a smart tactic, IMO).

Also, don't think that all street thugs only have one weapon or no spare rounds/back-up. A recent SWAT magazine had an article about a LE officer who routinely found criminals with multiple weapons & spare magazines, rounds.

The smart & practical move for an armed citizen or license holder is to "carry enough gun" and pack at least 1 speed strip/magazine.

I carry 10 rounds in a standard Glock 26, and a 12-round spare magazine. That is mostly because of the possibility of magazine failure. But also, although "most" civilian encounters end with fewer than ten rounds expended, "most" is not a synonym for "always." In statistics, one never looks at a mean without looking at the standard deviation. Quoted averages are sometimes the mean of a rather wide range of values, and no one can be assured that their particular incident is going to be average rather than at the far end of a data range.

(ClydeFrog, I read your post in its entirety, and this is more of a concurring opinion than a challenge to you.)

I usually only carry what I have in my gun.
If I'm out in the woods for an extended period of time I usually bring a couple extras, but for going to town I don't bother.
I could carry an extra mag, or for that matter I could wear a vest every day, but both are just a little too inconvenient to be worth it to me. I have too many things that I actually use - flashlight, wallet, keys, knife, gum, etc - to fill my pockets and belt with extra ammo.

Maybe the solution is to sew some mag carriers onto my vest?

theres a funny thing about a gun shot sound that makes people run. im guessing if your gettin jumped by alot of attackers your 1st couple shots will most likely scare off the rest that werent shot....that being said i still try to carry 1 extra mag with me....ya just never know.

Moon-Clips

Just curious if anyone here carries a revolver using moon-clips (Smith 625, Ruger SP 101 9mm, Taurus 905 etc.)? And if so, do you carry moon-clips as you would speed-loaders? Reason I ask is that I have quite a bit of 9&45 ammo and have thought about acquiring a corresponding revolver (just because). However, one of my concerns is that if I ever used it as a primary CCW I would need to carry a moon-clip or two for insurance so to speak and they seem a little 'flimsy' in that if you carried them your pant pocket the rounds may come loose and fall out of the moon-clip...? Just conjecture as I have no personal experience...?

-Cheers

Single-stack Colt 1911 New Agent, 7+1 in the gun plus a spare in the back pocket, which makes 15 rounds of .45ACP. Wife carries a P238 at 6+1 + spare, so she's at 13 rounds of .380. Keep the GP100 in the car with two speed strips, so that's 18 of .357.

Until recently I've been firmly in the "most civilian attacks" camp. Fully satisfied that 6+1 in my LCP would be more than enough. I do have an extra mag, and at times carried it with the extra 6. With the increasing incidences of "flash mobs", and I don't mean the goofy singing and dancing ones. I mean the violent looting, robbing, and assaulting ones. Along with several instances of what gangs of thugs are calling the "knock out" game I now carry my XD40 Subcompact with the bigger mag (12+1) in the gun, and the 9 round mag loaded in my pocket. As warmer weather approaches, and discrete carry becomes a problem with the Springer, I'll go to my newly acquired KAHR CM9 with 6+1, and maybe the Elsie Pea somewhere on me as a BUG.

KelTec P-11 with 11&1.

It's hot down here. If that doesn't get the job done, I'd rather die the relatively fast death of street combat than the slow, miserable death of packing pounds of gear through the blazing heat...

I carry whatever fits in my handgun du jour and no more.

I'm sure there are folks on U-tube that say you're an idiot if you carry anything at all. I don't pay much attention to them either...

Last 2 posts....

These last 2 member posts are just wrong...
Handguns aren't props or fashion statements.
As combat veteran & top firearms instructor; Clint Smith says:
"Handguns are comforting NOT comfortable." ;)

A spare pistol magazine or a few ammunition speed-strips are not; "pounds of gear". To have the mindset like post #77 is irresponsible.
If you can't commit to proper tactics or methods, then you shouldn't carry a loaded firearm in public, IMO.
