Daily- I've got my Glock 22 with 16 rounds in her, if on duty I carry my Glock 22 with 16 rds and two spare mags filled with 30 rounds and one full box (50) rounds in my patrol car.
I would never consider carrying a semi-auto without an extra magazine. While the extra ammo is certainly nice, the main reason is that magazine-related issues are one of the most common causes of a semi-auto to jam only after ammo-related issues in my experience.
As it stands, I carry a revolver more often than not and I usually slip a speed strip into the watch pocket of my jeans or a speed loader in my coat pocket because it's unobtrusive enough that I can't really think of a good reason not to.
For many years(mid 2000s or so), if I had a DA revolver, I'd pack 2 loaded speed strips in a metal Altoids mint tin, .
2 strips fit snug in the case & conceal them well. I heard of the carry tip on another well known firearm-tactics forum. You can keep the spare .38/.357magnum rounds close by in your vehicle w/o any strange glances or hassles.
When you travel, the Altoids case can slip right into a jacket or coat pocket.
I normally carry a reload of fmj. If I'm carrying my j frame normally a speedstrip with one shotshell. If I'm carrying my glock 26 or 19 I carry a 17 or 19 mag. I carry the spare mag and speed strip in case I need to shoot something that I don't want to use jhp defense ammo for. I figure if I'm reloading my gun its hit the fan and I'm just hoping to poke any hole at that point.
642 +2 speed strips makes 17
Glock27 + double mag pouch makes 28
Usually the smith is on body in town locally. If im going to the city the glock and mag pouch end up staying on the belt
Either way that makes 45 rounds with me at all times.
I am considering higher cap mags for the pouch. May as well
It's what a guy on youtube once said, people who carry 5 shots or just no reload for a gun are idiots, you don't know what your threat is or whats going to happen. Sure you got x shots, but can you it in those x shots? what if you miss?
Ccw'ing revolver(442 or 642), it's 5rds. + 5 in a speed strip. Speed strip carried in left rear pocket(I shoot right handed) encased in a homemade leather sheath. Also there's one 5rd. speed loader that stays in the console of the car and truck.
