Hated calibers

I have a BFG 45-70 that fires pretty awesome store bought rounds. Just killed a Bison with mine....

I don't have much use for a 9mm. I've seen what they don't do in action. I like to carry my .40 if I am wearing shorts and my .45 in winter when I wear a jacket. I enjoy my .44 mag double action and .357 double action. My .45LC is fun as well. All too big to carry. I have a 9mm and hate it. I guess if I had my Glock 17 that was stolen, I might feel a bit better about 9mm. I doubt it as when I replaced it I went to the .40sw. I just have seen too much actual 9mm in action and the lack of effect it has.

I am not trying to flame anyone, just expressing my opinion. To each there own I guess. If you like 9mm, then have at it. I won't stand in your way. I personally don't.

To address the thread question....I think people listen to friends, the internet and so on and decide what they want to try and then get it in their head that is the best. It also depends what you want to use your weapon for. If you are hunting big game, then a 9mm will not do. If you are shooting rabbits in the back 40, a .22 is just fine. If you are preparing for self protection at 20 feet or less, then just about anything will do the job. Heck I carried a .38 with +p rounds for a long time. I never had to use any of them thankfully and hope that trend continues.

Moccassins, you are indeed pardoned. Someday, you'll see the light and realize that a .45 Colt Blackhawk with "Ruger only" loads is just the thing to have on your hip in the woods, just in case you encounter one of God's creatures that you wish to eat, or vice versa.

I'd rather have a .44 magnum instead of a hot hand loaded .45 Colt, and I've spent a lot of time hunting in Alaska and none of it with a sidearm
 
- 40 S&W
I dislike this one simply because S&W brought it out when the .41AE was available but too little known. The 40 S&W required a new frame whereas the .41AE could be dropped into most 9mm pistols. Ballistics were comparable but felt recoil being nicer with the .41AE. And as soon as the 40 S&W was introduced, 41AE conversion kits dried up. No way was I going to pop for a whole new handgun just to get the 40 because it always felt like the introduction of the 40 was nothing but a money grab strategy..... So I stay with my 9mm and 45ACPs and have enjoyed 400 Cor-Bon conversions for my 45s.

9mm kinda leaves me cold but I wouldn't say I "hate" it and the 9mm loads (and bullets) sure have come a long way since the 1980s.

The only caliber that has ever made me go >blech< is probably the 7.62x38R that the Nagant revolver fires. Of course it may have something to do with the pistol itself. Interesting mechanical device but all that effort (13+ lb single action and 20+ lb double action trigger) to get the pistol to go "phut" and spit out that anemic round. Seriously you might as well just stick with a .32 ACP semi-automatic!
 
I don't hate any. They are all cool in some way or another. I would never buy a 9mm, I just don't see the point. If I had one, I would probably keep it, but I am a magnum revolver man. I like the .357 and the .44 the best of all. I once had a .380 and I traded it for a model 13 S&W. It was a good gun, a P230 Sig Sauer. I just didn't enjoy shooting it. I have shot a Beretta 9mm, and a S&W 9mm auto of some kind my old man has, and like I said, I don't see the point. They go "bang". I like em to go "boom".

Why would I hate a caliber? I can see not liking a gun for one reason or another; a caliber, though, as long as it goes bang.....

ZeSpectre, you got that right. Cool revolver, but the dang ammo is more than the cost of the gun. I have a really nice Tula, but don't want to spend more than for 10mm ammo to shoot such a suckish round. I have read that the original load for that was much hotter. I have also read that you can load up several "hot" loads with resized brass from other cartridges. I invested in the .32acp cylinder, and will bore it out to .32 H&R mag later. Several rounds can be fired from the little gun with the two cylinders if the second can be bored out. Same on these as the .380 though, seriously over priced for what they are. I had forgotten, but I hate the modern loads for this one as well.
 
I would accept as a gift and gladly own and shoot any firearm that was given to me. Yet there are a narrow few that I would purchase, after long hours of researching ballistics and price comparisons (I am to cheap to buy something that would be too expensive to shoot)
 
I'm not sure if "HATE" is the word I would use for my feelings of certain calibers. I definitely don't "Respect" certain calibers. I don't respect a caliber that is designed just for marketing hype without any new practical purpose. While it's true that all calibers had an origination at one time; most can be shown to fill a niche requirement. However; the 45GAP serves no purpose other than for Glock to have their "Own" caliber. The 327 magnum is another useless caliber. There is NOTHING that either one of these calibers can be used for that another caliber can do at the same or cheaper price. And with a lot more availability.

I can think of a purpose, use, and rational for the following handgun calibers. 45LC/ACP; 44mag/special; 357mag/38spl; 9mm; 380/32acp; 22lr. I don't respect any of the others, because they were provided not for purpose, but for marketing and profit only. This includes the 40S&W. Yes, the 9mm is weak, and the FBI realized that the 9mm wasn't a good option. However; it was an original military round, and therefor legit. But the only reason for contracting for the 40 S&W (Which originally was the 10mm but do much for the FBI); was because they wanted a magazine capacity that was more than the 45acp. The 45acp was the "BETTER" round, but the 40sw/10mm was basically only designed because of magazine capacity. So no, I don't respect those 2 either. Nor the 357sig and any other caliber not mentioned above.

Do I HATE them? No. Would I ever buy one? No way. If I was given one for free, I would ONLY keep it long enough to sell it or trade. And I also believe that with 45acp, 357mag/38, 380/32, and 22lr; I don't even NEED the others. I.e. I would never buy a 9mm. But, I can RESPECT the 44 series, 9mm, 45LC, etc... These are calibers that have history. They were built for a reason. As such, they deserve respect. Building a caliber only for an economic niche profit market, I have no respect for.
 
All cartridges are objects of beauty but I prefer calibers that can be bought in gas stations and hardware stores anywhere in the nation.
 
Yep. Hate the .40.

Stupid girlie-round for panty-waisted federal agents that can't handle the 10mm or .45acp... brought about not by failed hardware, but rather by idiots not doing their jobs correctly, keeping their duty weapons on them and botching a felony vehicle stop.

High pressure, low velocity, touchy about OAL. Prone to being used on gun platforms that fail to fully support the chamber since makers tried to just re-badge a 9mm frame as a .40 rather than really examining what it would take to do it "right."

Ballistically speaking and in the real world there's not much difference in any of the service calibers.

I still have never seen anyone willing to volunteer to stand in front of any caliber and prove it's inferior.
 
I would have to say the hated caliber around here is the 10mm. Orshelin has the same three boxes of 10mm for a while now. I don't know if $25 is a good deal or not, but I watch all the other calibers move and that one stay put.

You're absolutely right. And it surprises me because so many people are willing to volunteer stories of BG's that got shot 5 times with a .38 or a .40 and managed to drive home without bleeding to death. I would expect people would be lining up to be shot to prove what poor rounds these are!
 
I think some people let certain calibers/cartridges become far too much of their own identity and, as such, have an irrational necessity to lash out at anything that they deem a lesser incarnation of their own personal icon.
