Hated calibers

40 S&W -- Ironically, that's my Self-defense caliber.

They are easier to find than the 9mm.

(PS. Not this week tho, stopped in 12 places with no luck.)

Hmmmmm! Haven't caught this post before!

Having spent most of my life collecting most anything that I could afford at the moment, I'd say none of them. They all had their purpose at some time to somebody.

I just spent the last few years consolidating but it was for what 'I' felt that I wanted/may possibly need/am physically able to fire. The folks that bought MY cast-offs were perfectly happy to get them.

There is no right or wrong here. I kept a selection that includes a lot of cartridges that are scorned in this post. Why do we have to "hate" things?

Years ago I scarfed a Gyrojet, boxed with some rounds. As a pistol it sucked but the guy that bought it was happy, I made a $40 turnaround in 2 weeks and I was happy.

There's a butt for every seat.

Not so much 'Hate'...

As usual, I see things from a bit of a different perspective. F'rinstance, commonly the people who '... hate that 40 Short & Weak...' then go on to tout the 9x19 NATO round as 'suitable' for self-defense.

Bunky, anything the .40 S&W won't do, the 9x19 won't do worse. (That may take a while to figure out.)

I don't have much use for a number of calibers. I cannot understand the practical application of the .22 WRM(agnum). It's very expensive and just doesn't do much that a .22 long rifle or .38 Special or even .32 Smith & Wesson Long won't do. .32 S&W Long is a fairly unused round, except for precision target shooting applications. In a proper handgun, it could be a suitable rabbit gun. .25 ACP is hard to justify, as is .32 ACP; however there are some really neat little guns made for those calibers - simply fun to shoot a bit of history at times.

Probably the round I like least is the 9x19. I think simply because it represents - in my mind - the "I can't anything so I'll carry a lot of bullets and shoot a lot to make up for it" school of defensive shooting. Yeah, I know I'm in the minority. Some of my best friends carry 9x19 pistols.

I dont care for the .380 acp to me it seems like an underpowered 9mm that is half as effective but more expensive to shoot than 9mm might as well get a 9mm subcompact to fill the role as a concealed back-up gun that is the same size as 380 subcompacts.I will sell my Bersa 380 because ammo price and performance is not up to my standards.I will reserve my Glock 19 as my CCW pistol when I am eligible to apply for CCW permit in 2 years. I like 9mm since its inexpensive, accurate, and effective.

People just hate the recoil of the .40S&W, plus they're not accurate to handle the bang.

My XD40 is just as accurate as my S&W M&P 9MM compact and my S&W M&P 40 cal. All my guns are accurate, It takes practice on the shooters part to capitalize on the weapons accuracy

I hate all the calibers that I don't have.

About the only thing the 380 acp has going for it,is the fact it is avalible in such a small handgun that they are the concealed guns that are " actually " carried everyday - everywhere. As embarrased as I am to admit it, I carry a Ruger LCP 16 hours a day. No other gun I have found is so concealable and easy to wear while working. So as weak as it may be, it has a place in the real world.

I dont hate any caliber really because when it comes down to it most of all of them have the potential to kill a person in one shot. But i still prefer certain calibers for self defence because of their Higher potential to stop a threat.

Like a lot of others, I don't hate any calibers, there's a few I don't like. I don't care for the .45 acp, I get less recoil from my .44 mag loads. 45 is a great round, just not for me. Others include 9mm, .25, .380 auto. But, that's just my opinion.

Huh? I find no loads that will recoil less than a .45 ACP in .44 magnum variety. And, if you're downloading them to that point, then what is the point?

Hated Calibers

Some people have Entirely To Much time on their Hands!
Some I like better Than others, But The ones I Don't like, Dosen't Annoy Me or Anything. To the GAP Haters, Don't worry 45 ACP Isn't going Away!
It'll Be Ok, I promise:confused:

Human beings

Sometimes we can associate the words and actions of proponents to a particular round ,too. Maybe some of you have a similar experience to this story:
A long time ago, a guy found his way to up near my deer camp, brand new hunting clothes, boots, vehicle (out of state) and all. He then proceeded to tell about his new, custom, "mountain rifle" in .264 Mag. This thing was apparently a death ray to any living organism within the viewable landscape, and if he pointed it at an animal the poor thing would look up to heaven and then fall over, in recognition of its inevitable demise. When I asked him what barrel length he had on his rifle, he put his nose in the air in obvious contempt (I don't think he knew the answer) and proceeded to tell me that if I knew anything about "mountain rifles" I wouldn't need to ask such things.
I believe it would have been highly amusing to see him at a chronograph, as compared to the velocities that he'd obviously seen in print somewhere.
Anyway, every time I see a reference to the .264 WM I think of that yahoo.
My other particular bias? IMHO, I believe that .25 autos only take up metal that could be used in an actual gun.

I'm starting to hate 45 GAP and 357 SIG. I don't know anything at all about those calibers either. Why the hate? Simply because every time I go into a store that sells ammo, I always check to see if they might have a box or two in one of the calibers that I shoot (a hopeless cause I know, but I'm always optimistic). I now reload for 357 Mag and 45 Colt, but I'm always short of brass. Anyway, it never fails that I scan the (mostly empty) ammo shelves and invariably my heart LEAPS as I see the numerals 357 on a box only to see the dreaded letters SIG after the number. Same way when I see 45 on the box only to see it says GAP. They are some of the only calibers that are in stock nowdays. It's a shame that ammo makers put those boxes of shells out there only to cause heartbreak to us normal people. What is a SIG or a GAP anyway (yes I know what they are really)?

Also I have to admit I am developing a strong dislike for 9 MM as well. No fault of the caliber. Just that recently (in the past 6 months) I have had the experience of travelling to some larger cities in the midwest and east ("large" being a relative term when you live in a town of 3000 and it's the only town for 30 miles in any direction). Anyway, I have had the experience of conversing with a few teen agers who seem kind of fascinated to learn that I'm from Wyoming and that I'm a gun enthusiast. They invariably ask me what calibers I shoot. They dismiss my talk about 357's and 44's and 45 Colts as ancient weapons that they have heard about in ancient history perhaps that Custer used to fight the Romans or the Huns with. They only know what they see on TV and I don't know how m any times I have heard the comment "man, when I turn 21 I'm gonna get me a 9 MM; that is a totally awesome pistol". Ah well...

STOP HATING ON THE .40!

If the kick is so bad, why can I eat out the head of a silhouette target with Double Tap loaded with 180gr. Gold Dot heads from a Glock 27 at 25'? I think alot of the complaining comes from people who have preconceived notions of what it is. It is not the bastard child of the 9 and 45, so stop thinking it is.

As for the "short and weak", alot of FMJ ammo I've seen produced by the major manufacturers for 10mm isn't much different in terms of velocity. Most white-box ammo is loaded to the old FBI load, which is what your good 40 is loaded to.

And to those nay-sayers who say it shouldn't be taken into the woods, I carry it when I go deer hunting and had the pleasure of killing a stubborn, good-sized bobcat eating a bird at the foot of my ladder stand this past season. As for under-penetration, it went through his skull and exited through his right hip and kept going.

Hunley little bit of overkill bet ya had alot a patchin to do I dispatch most of my cats with a 22LR I hate to sew. What did you do with the pelt ? Calibers I hate none calibers I find useless that's a different story lets see I own 22LR, 22mag, 17HM2, 5.56/223, 38/357mag, 7.62/308, 12GA, oops forgot 6mm mag, case I gotta reach out and touch someone. All the others are useless because the manufacturers are wasting their time and mine by not making what I need.

I'm gonna go ahead and say something unpopular, but my feelings:

.45 ACP is the only round that annoys me in of itself. Not because its particularly ineffective, but because it seems to garner this flock of foaming-at-the-mouth "OHMAYGAWD 45 IS A BIG NUMBAR IT MUST BE TEH MOST POWERFAL HANDGUN ROUND IN EXISTANCE" weirdos. It's big bore for the sake of being big-bore - with very questionable ballistics and not really any more proven stopping power in JHP than .40 S&W or 9mm para. I do admit it makes sense in the military since they use FMJ.
