I'm not exactly sure all these examples involving LEOs are applicable to people who carry non-professionally. I guess if there is a jealous somebody gunning for me somewhere, they may have a reason to pursue me knowing I have a firearm. I'm not exactly public enemy number one, and I'm unconvinced that everyday criminals are interested in hanging around and involving themselves in a firefight over me. I'm certainly not interested in pursuing someone and forcing them into an armed confrontation if they are willing to run away.

I have seen a number of videos that involved a robber that engaged a victim even after the victim fired at the robber. It is not common, but it isn't unheard of. You have to remember that once the bullets start flying the criminal wants to stay alive as much as you do. Some of them will return fire just like some victims will return fire.

The poll doesn't specify that, so I'll assume that some of you who carry 40+ rounds are actually performing an action in which one could realistically expect a shootout involving a lot of firing and missing, body armor, or a LOT of determined targets.

Last summer there was a group of four guys robbing people by pulling up, shooting them in the legs with birdshot, then jumping out beating them and robbing them. On a couple of occasions they actually kidnapped the people, took them to atms and then beat them severely. One case even involved them taking a guy to the lake and forcing him to walk in to the lake. They then fired several times and missed him. He fell and pretended to be hit. They left without checking and he survived.

Are such things common? No, but they do happen. In my area it is increasingly common that robberies involve multiple assailants with at least one gun. It is usually two people with one gun. One guy points the gun while the other one robs and beats the person. So, multiple assailant attacks are seemingly the new norm.

I would not bank on an old fashion, pull the gun and the single bad guy runs scenario. Things don't work like that as often as they use too.

Now, to answer the poll, I do carry one spare mag incase there is a failure. I also carry a knife to aid in weapon retention if needed.

Shades of Last house on the left. I always said if it appeared I was going to be executed, I would fight to the death with every fiber of my being.

During the past couple years, I've begun carrying the backup mag. For me it's more about dealing with a malfunction than about needing the extra rounds.

Question: If you have a malfunction what is the procedure for clearing the Jam?

Answer: Drop the mag dump the offending round. (requires two Hands)

If you have a spare mag then you accomplish that a lot faster than trying to recover the mag which caused the Jam.

Most malfunctions in quality autos is caused by an ammo or magazine malfunction.

If you carry an auto at least one spare mag is mandatory. I generally carry two.

We were always taught to slap and rack. Slap the bottom of the magazine to fully seat it, then rack the slide. That will clear most jams without having to drop the magazine.

--Wag--

Rather be safe than sorry...I always carry a spare mag...extra ammo and a backup mag if the first one won't feed/malfunctions.

Just my gun, no spare mags. If I get in a situation that can't be resolved with 13 rds of 9mm, I'm probably in deep doo doo no matter what I'm carrying.

Missed the point. The extra mag is in part for failures. If you need to drop the mag to clear a jam after 2 shots, the mantra that the extra is to shoot 13 zombies is not the case.

Some clearage drills are to rip out the mag, drop it and reload a new one.

No. Here's my point. I'm not a trained soldier. I'm not a trained LEO. I'm just an ordinary person. Like 95% of CCW holders. Way too many people think that when that terrible day comes that they actually have to use their gun for self defense that they will cooly and calmly draw their weapon, take a Weaver stance, get a perfect sight picture, and fire perfect shots. And if their gun malfunctions, they will calmly go through the motions of clearing it and loading a new magazine. Maybe in Hollywood. But when the time comes, the average person's brain is going to turn to mush. They probably won't even know they have an extra mag, much less remember what to do with it. Some average people who've actually used a gun in self defense can't even tell you how many shots they fired. Again, not talking about soldiers, police, or anyone who's been through hours and hours of tactical training and drills. Just average guys like me. I see my gun like I see the brakes on my car. I keep them in good repair and then just assume that they will work when I need them. And if they fail. Well, everyone rolls snake eyes once in a while.

Sorry, don't buy this, Stooge. That's why we spend time practicing - so our brains don't turn to mush. We stay in the fight.

Yep, the average CHL or CCW type doesn't do this. Too bad for them. I agree with that. That's evolution.

Most civilians get by with the typical Mugger Be Gone where they wave their gun at a bad guy like a cross to Dracula. But sometimes it doesn't work that way.

It is someone's choice to understand and train with instruments of lethal force.

Carrying an extra mag is vital....not just for malfunctions, but reloading after a gunfight. Empty guns are useless guns....

Well, you can bop someone in the head or sternum. I took a nasty class where you were given a gun with an unknown number of rounds. When accosted and out of ammo, if you were still in the close fight - you could smash the gun (with appropriate technique) into the opponent. I have butt stroked a reactive target and hit another in the face with my Surefire. Probably would have died in the real fight but its worth trying.

However, I prefer to have more ammo and not do this - getting old.

But that would be quite exciting.
