It might (or might not ) be interesting to further pursue whether the folks who carry a spare mag (or mags) with a semiauto pistol are also folks who have invested any time in acquiring some sort of training.

That's a very good poll question.

I'd wager that most folks who carry a spare mag or two have had some kind of training or street experience. Folks with little or no formal training are more apt to carry just the gun and if they carry a spare magazine, it's in a pocket or purse.

Extra mag? Ok, dump the bad one, get the new one and in the meantime? You are shot full of holes.
Oh ye of little faith, you'd be surprised what happens during many shootings.

Not too long ago...3-4 years, an officer and a thug fired at each other outside a retail store. A total of 23 rounds were expended and the officer landed two hits to end the conflict. Two things stood out about this shooting. First, the officer dropped his spare magazine during his reload, but just continued on, inserting his 2nd spare magazine while the thug missed him repeatedly. Second was that it took place in a half empty parking lot where neither man took cover behind a car and they missed each other at less than 23 feet!

On the rare occasion that I carry a semi-auto, I always carry at least one spare magazine because, in my experience, magazine-related issues are one of the most common reasons for a semi-automatic handgun to malfunction.

When I carry a revolver, which is far more common than a semi-auto for me, I usually carry at least one speed loader, speed strip, or both.

Spare 6rnd mag in front pocket

I have had mags give me problems so I carry a spare always, Probably just overkill but I cant see the future as clear as those who dont carry a spare:rolleyes:

I'm not exactly sure all these examples involving LEOs are applicable to people who carry non-professionally. I guess if there is a jealous somebody gunning for me somewhere, they may have a reason to pursue me knowing I have a firearm. I'm not exactly public enemy number one, and I'm unconvinced that everyday criminals are interested in hanging around and involving themselves in a firefight over me. I'm certainly not interested in pursuing someone and forcing them into an armed confrontation if they are willing to run away.

The poll doesn't specify that, so I'll assume that some of you who carry 40+ rounds are actually performing an action in which one could realistically expect a shootout involving a lot of firing and missing, body armor, or a LOT of determined targets.

When I go downtown, I always put another mag in my coat pocket.

Around the house I don't, but I have a cabinet full of loaded weapons, so all I have to do is get to it.

Just a observation in other posts concerning revolvers and semi-auto i have said the extra cap of a semi-auto was a advantage. Most argued against that saying that most shootings involve 4 or 5 shoots and if you have to reload then its probably to late. So why do the majority in this poll carry an extra mag if their is no point according to a lot on this forum.

PS. I have 3 semi-autos and have never had a problem with magazines causing a malfunction.

A lot of earlier posts are correct: magazine malfunctions are a major type of problem that semiauto pistol owners encounter.

Having another mag on hand allows you to simply drop one and replace it. Better safe than sorry, eh?

absolutely

carry a 9mm and i double carry shoulder with it and 2 mags. i'm a relative newbie when it comes to shooting. been doing it for about 2 yrs consistently. so until my aim gets better and i get some more training, i'm carrying full weight

I carry single stack guns or a snub nose. Although I may never need an extra mag, I carry one in the opposite pocket using a Desantis Mag-Packer pocket holster. They do make them for double stack mags as well.

My snub is for either the extremely rare time I ankle carry or the more common time in a 5.11 holster shirt while bike riding. I'll either carry a speed strip or two in the opposite 5.11 shirt pocket or pants pocket using a Simply Rugged leather holder.

This is the pouch I use: http://www.simplyrugged.com/most-versatile-ammo-pouch/

Extra mags?

I always carry an automatic (Browning BDM or BHP in 9MM) with either one or two spare mags. IMHO the mag is the weakest link in the function of an automatic pistol. Dan

It is not the number of rounds as much as the equipment failure as primary.

How many times must that be said.

But there are cases of needing more rounds.

It is just your risk assessment. Since most of you will never use the gun - you don't need none of those stinking bullets in it anyway.

Exactly Glenn. If you pull your gun, the bad guy will statistically just run away anyway, so you don't need ammo. I mean, how likely is it that you'll have to actually pull your gun AND shoot it? We should just carry pictures of guns. Those are bound to be enough to deter any wrong doers, and if not, then you shouldn't have been there anyway!

;)

I carry a minimum of two reloads,

when CPLing. Either speed loaders or two mags.

Rather have more than not enough.

Just did an exercise where my solid old primary decided it was time to crash. Finished with my BUG. Funny story to be shared later. No telling, Pax!
