I carry 2 single stack mags. If I were using a double stack gun, I'd probably just carry one spare. It's not like carrying mags is hard or something.

Well, what do you want, YES or NO and then we shut up?

Of course we're going to discuss the merits and hash out that that's been hashed out before.

LMAO! Boy, we do like to BS, don't we.

I'm getting paranoid in my old age. I really think I might add a mag pouch to the belt after reading all this.

18 + 1 = A full cylinder and 2 speedstrips plus 1 more in case of a miss - compared to the revolver I used to carry on the farm, woods and horseback.

I do carry a spare or two of cheapies when there is a chance of a plinking session breaking out.

When I carry my .45 I carry 13+1 in the gun, and a 10 rnd spare. However, I am seriously considering replacing the 13 rnd magazine with a 10 rnd to reduce weight and size.

When I carry my 10mm I carry 8+1 in the gun and a 9 rnd spare.

I also usually have my BUG + 1 spare magazine on me as well too.

Kinda thought about this for a day;

Warm weather I carry a S&W 469 no extra magazine:
Unless I visit my sister in Richmond then an extra 12 round magazine.

Cold weather I carry a RIA CS with an extra 7 round magazine
Unless I visit my sister in Richmond then 2 extra magazines.
Something about where have to drive through where my sister lives. :(

Real cold weather I carry a 6 shot Armscor 200 in the outside pocket of my parka (no extra ammo) and said RIA.

I usually do not.

My reason for that is that if it's a problem which can't be solved with 14 rounds of .45, I have the wrong gun.

Reading all these posts about the tactical reasons for a spare mag other than the capacity does make me reconsider.

when I wear a shoulder holster, I do have spare mags. I don't carry nearly as much as I used to. Now my permit is mostly for the gun in the truck. In the truck, I certainly have a spare.

I usually carry a spare magazine because I agree with fastbolt's assessment. Magazines can (and will) break for the strangest reasons and the damnedest times.

That, and I prefer single-stack autos. For the 1911's, I used to have a BHP magazine pouch that held 2 x 1911 magazines. I did the same with duty gear too. A dual magazine pouch on the belt for double-stack mags, but 4 of the 1911 magazines tucked in there. Worked for the 1911, S&W 39's and a few others.

I have always tried to avoid carrying a spare magazine "loose" in a jacket or pants pocket. A friend did that for most of a year and when we hit the range he found his "spare" mag's feed lips were totally fubar'd due to repeated small knocks.

It might (or might not ;) ) be interesting to further pursue whether the folks who carry a spare mag (or mags) with a semiauto pistol are also folks who have invested any time in acquiring some sort of training.

I've found that it's not uncommon to find that some shooters who have attended some sort of training (whether continuous in-service LE or private citizen shooting classes/schools) can come away with an understanding of how relying on a single magazine can limit their ability to resolve a magazine-related problem.

FWIW, in keeping with this thread's topic, when I've worked with private citizen shooters in classes I've found that very few of them actually carried a magazine other than what was in their pistols. Some came to classes with only their single magazine, and the ones who brought more than one magazine generally didn't bring (or own, apparently) a magazine carrier to use, and ended up having to put their spare magazines in a pocket.

Since my primary focus and responsibility has been to work with LE shooters for more than 20 years, I'll usually see those folks bring at least 1 spare magazine to use for their off-duty pistols when they're doing a qual course-of-fire. Not all of them, but the significant majority. (Presumably, because it's been a habit they've acquired from having carried 2-4 spare magazines on-duty, perhaps?)

I voted "yes", although technically it's a speedloader for a revolver rather than a spare magazine.

Whenever I carry an auto loader, I always carry 2 spare magazines. I can carry 2 as easily as I can carry 1, and it is always better to have it and not need it rather than to need it and not have it.

If 16 rounds is not sufficient, I am dead anyway

Simply not worth it. Mater of odds. How many gun fights last more than 3?

Most don't (that's what the statistics say). So, some have zero, some have 6.

I am only interested in stopping an issue, not pursuing it. If I can stop, hold off or make it go away I am not going to be shooting a lot. Only enough do manage the situation, I don't have to solve it.

Extra mag? Ok, dump the bad one, get the new one and in the meantime? You are shot full of holes.

Back to statistics, I am more likely to get killed in a car crash than need an extra magazine. Carry a spare car, drive a tank, where does it end (with a small class 8 Pickup?)

Do the best with what you can and what gets you is probably not what you spent all the time thinking about.

Too many people focus in on the security issue and ignore the rest. Get an auto with a 5 star crash rating is money well spent.

Fool yourself into thinking you can manage a gun fight involving 3 magazine changes. Hmm, and then there are those who spent a life on the tactical drills only to freeze up when the real thing occurred. If I wanted to really find out how I would do I would have gone into LEO (actually did some training in it and decided it was not for me). I did find out I had a lot to learn.

That you find out in your fist gun fight. Somewhere in there is having a life. You should balance it out.

Wow, I guess I'm amazed.

Semi-auto :
I don't ever carry less than 2 extra mags. With one gun that gives me 46 rounds, and with another gun 37. Plus a revolver back up.

Revolvers :
7 shot revolver with 2 speed loaders, and a backup with 11 rounds in it + 1 mag.

I guess people are expecting only 1 person , and at close range, and that everything works out ok for them. Situations I've been in, is the main reason I carry what I do.

There is no such thing as having too many rounds, but there sure is such a thing as not having enough.

Example, 2 officers vs 1 guy.... the officers shot 68 rounds.... the other guy shot nearly as many. The gun fight ended with the guy getting hit in the leg and running out of ammo. All within 15 ft of each other the entire time.

Quite a little rant you've got going there, seems like a lot of judging, too.

You've said it yourself and it's in black & white, the statistics don't lie.

YOU shouldn't be carrying a gun at all, for the hassle -- statistically, you have hardly any chance of EVER needing it.

You will go through the hassle of carrying a firearm but a single little extra magazine is somehow is colossal burden and deal breaker?

If you really cared about statistics, you'd never drive a car anywhere. For certain, the safest method of travel is an elevator. But you knew that, right?

Pick your own limits and live your own life... "somewhere in there."
