Do people you know hate when you carry?

PS..where you live sounds awesome to me.

Well drop on by and we will cook up something good and shoot out back I have a small range on the place. We all shoot a lot out here where I live. Sounds like ww2 at times.

That sounds awesome, love me some BBQ. But don't have a BBQ gun...so can't go if it's a BBQ. I'll get laughed at.

I would recommend you keep it a secret. I carry and only my wife parents know. I don't even let my kids know because kids like to brag.

That is a problem if you are not in law enforcement, as they expect you to carry if you are a cop. Either way, keep it to yourself unless you want to unholster while inside your visit location.

You may have to give them the talk:

Crime is out of control, and I want to protect you honey! This is clear, and is true! If possible, take her shooting. I have found that a high percentage of people who hate guns have never shot one, or been around one. A little shooting with a small caliber, AKA .22, so as to not scare her, will go a long way to making her feel comfortable around guns.

I do not currently carry a gun but my family would not care. it would be my wifes family that I would have to worry about as they are very conservitive. My wife wasnt into guns till she met me and like most other people not into guns, feared them. now she owns a 22 and loves to go shooting. I like what my brother said best about guns.
" Look at post Katrina New Orleans. A gun was a handy thing to have around when they started looting and pillaging everything after all of the cops ran away"

I saw the best response recently (might have been on TFL, I don't remember) that asked the question "If you choose to ignore the 2nd Amendment, what other parts of the Constitution do you choose to disregard????" Nuff Said.

In Alaska, you have a choice

Either you inform the 'head of house, or authorized Adult resident' (paraphrased) and ask permission to enter a residence armed, or you don't carry

To those few, who I feel won't have an issue, I don't bother taking it off, afew, looked at me, and said 'Oh, yeah, you have to ask' others have said, 'should have figured it.' Some like my cousin, I don't, not because of him, but his wife, would politely, completely flip out, (and tell everybody in the family) So I take it off. Don't like to, but it's a choice I am forced to make.

I've been accused more than once, of being "too direct"..meaning I don't beat around the bush..if I have something to say, I say it..I carry daily, and my license here in my state says "firearms license" not "concealed " carry firearms license..Therefore , if I feel like wearing a belt holster, I wear one,and don't actually care what anyone else thinks or says..I always wear pullover shirts, and cover my gun ..but sometimes the gun pokes out anyway.

That said, there were a few instances where something was said by others when they would see I was armed..usually, its the college socialist indoctrinated younger people, or of course, liberals..I went into a convenience store to purchase cigarettes, and the young cashier knew me for some time, but never knew I was armed...she saw my pistol poking out of my shirt, and had a biig reaction.."WHY ARE YOU CARRYING A GUN??"..I replied :" because its my Constitutional RIGHT to carry a gun...WHY do YOU have a problem with it???Guns don't Kill, people do..wouldn't you be glad if I was in here, and someone came in to try and rob the place and I stopped them with this"??..she thought for a moment...and said "well..yes..BUT...I dont see why anyone would need a gun unless they are a policeman, or unless your'e looking for trouble.." I said.."the scenario I just showed you , proves that anyone that legally carries a gun, isn't looking for trouble"..she then replied : "BUT GUNS KILL!"..I replied back :" so do KNIVES, CLUBS, and the massive amounts of Drugs that your generations uses...young lady..people Kill..and if they really want to kill...its not limited to GUNS as to what weapon they can use". that seemed to shut her up...

next..I went to a flea market in Florida with my daughter...she and her husband went one way , & I decided to separate and wander around by myself..as I was walking a lady ran up to me , and said.."excuse me, I am the manager here, and I noticed you are carrying a gun"..I said "yes, I am ..how can I help you with that?? would you like to see my license, that is recognized in this state"?? she said yes..I showed it to her..she replied " it makes the dealers nervous , so we expect anyone who is armed to let us know in the office.."..

I replied " in that case, I would expect that at the entrance to your place you would have a sign directing customers to do so...as I did not see a sign anywhere at the entrance as I came in as I always make it a point to look before I go into any establishment in regards to anyone carrying a firearm..therefore you now know that I am carrying , and you have seen my license...is there anything else I can help you with in regards to this?"..she looked at me blankly with a bit of resentment..but was dead silent.."thank you", she said and stormed off..

I was at a table buying a pack of cigarette lighters, and noticed her from the corner of my eye, and the dealer and I were actually talking about guns, as he had some gun mags at his table...I couldn't resist..I said not loud, but loud enough for her to hear :" interesting..that this EVIL GUN carring guy is actually PURCHASING something from a dealer, isnt it?"..he laughed, and I told him about my encounter with the manager..he said he was unaware of that requirement at this flea market, and it probably was her that wanted it..
as I left , I double checked at the outside of the place..and nowhere anywhere was there any signs or notices about anyone carrying going in there..

At a walmart I was buying jeans..the old man at the counter ( he was just a cashier) saw my gun poking out of my shirt ( I did have a jacket on) he said "cover the gun"..I said " my license doesnt say "concealed carry"..it says firearms carry"..he said " just cover it"..I paid him took my jeans and said " I am carrying with a valid license..is there a store requirement that says I must conceal my weapon in this store?..he looked at me over his glasses..and said .."no, but isn't it a good idea"?? ..I replied.." it might be, but that would be my choice, unless the store has a sign stating that I must cover my weapon at all times when I am in here...if it doesnt, then the laws that apply to my license hold, and its my choice to open carry or not, and with all due respect, not yours nor anyone elses." ..he replied " you must be an attorney"..I said 'nope...just an educated citizen that knows the firearm laws in my state." I took my bag and left...

actually the point I am making in these long winded comments, is that we the carrying citizens, will always sooner or later run into someone with a problem should they see we are carrying...I think the key is knowing how to deal with it in a non contraversial yet correct and lawful way.. I have no issues with my family, as my wife carries herself, and always did..and its only her and I..

A friend comes into my bedroom and sees a fire extinguisher and asks " why do you have one of these in your room?" i reply "in case of a fire you dumb ass"

Why do i carry a gun? Most people do not know i carry. The ones that do and complain i will convert to become gun nuts very quickly. All it takes is to take them to a range and get them to fire a few rounds with my Ruger 22.

Im sure that my enemies are unhappy about me carrying. This guy and his Hi Power are married.

My in laws were very against guns. I have managed to convert all of them. Even my mother in law is now pro gun and supports me when competitions come up. I actually stay with my in laws over competition weekends because they live about an hour closer to the range.

I dont take crap from anti gunners. I convert them.:)

Zathras- I agree with your principles entirely. There is only one thing I personally would handle differently.

Unless there is a LEO asking or requiring me to show my license, I will not show it to anyone, period. Telling them I'm licensed to carry is good enough, IMO. If they're unsatisfied, too bad.

Concealed carry: tell or don't tell

I'm both a Realtor and a musician. When I leave for my office in the morning I check two things: one, my electronic lock box key and two, my smith 442 or my CZ P-01. I have been told by people in my office that they feel safer when I'm in the office. While I don't come right out and announce I'm carrying, I do carry in an IWB holster usually masked by my sportcoat or suit jacket. But I often open the jacket at the office for comfort's sake.

Summertimes (and here in Florida's Tampa Bay area that's 'mostly') I wear an untucked Pilot shirt or an aloha type shirt, with weaponry carried the same way. I will say that the electronic lock box key in its' belt holster bulges about the same as my standard carry pieces.

When I'm out playing a 'tuxedo gig' my pieces are hidden by my cummerbund and my tuxedo coat. Most of my musical colleagues are also shooters, so there's never any doubt or question whether or not I'm carrying.

But it was gratifying to hear the folks in my office express not only their approval but their appreciation.

I don't associate with emotional trainwrecks.

LMAO

Just today, before I left to work..my aunt asked me "do you carry that with you all day?!?" followed by a "why?!"

Another thing...anyone hate the octopus people that when they hug you at a party or get together, they like molest the small of your back AND squeeze you ever to tight.

So 1:00 is compromised and 4:30+ is compromised?

Zathras,

I dont disagree with your ideals, but you may want to change your carry methods a bit. The fact that you have been "made" by several people tells me what you are doing isnt working very well. I carry a fullsize steel gun and it is invisible under only a tee shirt (IWB Kholster and a good belt).

I also wouldnt be showing off your carry license. That choice is yours, however.

I'm not saying it's Zathras but I really think some people like to be "made", albeit having it happen as though the "unwanted" exposure of the firearm was entirely unintentional. It's a way for some people to "announce" that they're carrying without saying anything at all.
As S_Constitutionist observed,
The fact that you have been "made" by several people tells me what you are doing isnt working very well.

Good thread. Im glad I took the time to read through it. I dont have my permit yet but hopefully by next month. Im not sure how the girlfriend feels about the idea of me carrying. The other night she came over and I had my AR out and she was like why is that out? I said, "well when you leave I am going to bed, where else would it be?" She obviously didnt understand why I had it left out within reach of my bed.

I think she will slowly warm up to the idea as she already loves shooting my AR. I guess the idea of it sitting out make her nervous?

Here in IL we cannot carry legally, so the subject does not often arise. With my PA-non resident permit I can carry when I travel to specific states, and I do so. The biggest concern from family members was how would I secure the gun when at our destination (the beach, where carry was not feasible)? I tell the family that I take a trigger lock with me, so that when on the beach in a swimsuit, the gun is safe from accidents by curious grandchildren. That ended the concern over my carrying.

Most of my friends, acquaintances and Family do not know that I carry concealed every day. They have no need to know. My little Ruger SP101 rides in an OWB S/S, high-ride holster, covered by an untucked shirt, sweater or a jacket.
It is never an issue. A few have over the years discovered that I carry.
I have one DSister who objects. So, I leave it in the car, when I visit her.
Noone else minds at all.
