Just my perception(and what I was told by an old guy who came from a tough area): that hook on the cane should always stay on YOUR end. Giving up grip advantage is bad and may allow the other guy to take the tool away from you. For this reason, I'd not recommend using the "heavy end" of a cane or walking stick for striking. My Cold Steel has a heavy head/grip but I intend to keep it in MY hands. In addition, using the head may be perceived as "using a club" in an altercation by a court.
