Big-Bore Snubbies: Who's a fan?

S&W 44mag 3" and Dan Wesson 44mag 3". Love em both. Am positively drooling over the Ruger Alaskan in 44mag (I like different toys in the same caliber).

Also a Bond Arms Cowboy derringer in 44 mag (that one is kinda hard to shoot)

I'm waiting for Ruger or S&W to make a quality top-break revolver in .44 Special, .455 Webley, and .45 Colt. I'd probably get one of each !

Been dreaming for a while about a Smith 629 Performance Center .44mag ... closest I have to a big bore snubbie now is a Taurus 617, 7-shot .357mag ... got it a trigger job and fixed the barrel-cylinder gap and it is now an excellent shooter and one of my favorite guns ...

Big Bore??

Why would I want to carry a big bore snubby when a .357 comes in a smaller package and the 125 gr jacketed hollow points are one of the best man stoppers ever to come down the road??

So, how well do bigbore snubs work for putting down nearly seven-year-old zombie threads?:p

Why would I want to carry a big bore snubby when a .357 comes in a smaller package and the 125 gr jacketed hollow points are one of the best man stoppers ever to come down the road??

Because the 125gr .357 Magnum has a lot of flash, blast, and recoil from a small gun and many people don't want to deal with it (I like a 158gr .357 Magnum a lot better). A bigbore like .44 Special, .45 ACP, or .45 Long Colt from a larger framed gun gives you a very useful level of power without all the drama.

I carried a S&W M296 Airweight Centennial in .44 Special for around ten years. Started out with the hot CorBon JHP load. When the 200 grain all copper DPX came out, I switched to those. Really, it was a fine combination and very light to carry all day. Things like the theater mass shooting pushed me in a different direction with my carry gun. I wanted better accuracy at a longer range, I wanted a bullet that would penetrate most vests, and I wanted more rounds. So I carry an HK P2000 LEM in .357 SIG now.

The ultimate big bore snubby is one of my favorite guns. Ruger Super Alaskan in .480 Ruger. Really fine revolver and not too strenuous to shoot. But OK has a "no carry over .45 caliber" rule so I've never been able to carry it around off the property.

This is the first time I've ever heard of such a law. I assume that the "rule" doesn't apply when hunting.
This may be the oldest thread I've ever seen revived-it was started thirteen years ago!

Because I find .357 snubs just not practical with the excessive muzzle blast, flash, and recoil. Just not something I look for in a small carry gun, I'll stick to .38's in a J frame. I will also take .44 special or .45 Colt over a 125gr .357 in a snub any day of the week.

Been dreaming for a while about a Smith 629 Performance Center .44mag ...

Have one (stock wood grips) and I find it's harsher to shoot than my .454 Alaskan or 460es (snub). The nice Hogues make a HUGE difference in my opinion...

Guess this topic has no end date. Started in 2006. No big bore snubbies here but I have a few in 38/357. The gun I want is a Ruger Alaskan in 480. Just a matter of time before they are more available.

+1 for the 3-inch Taurus 431 --- the wife has two, one for carry & one for home.

My favorite snub is my 3-inch S&W 657 --- kicks a little, though.....and just a teenchy bit loud.

I love my Alaskan 44 mag!

Here you can see it in action shooting my reloads.

I had an Alaskan in 480 as well (6 shot) but shooting it felt and sounded more like a 357  Twisty recoil, ear piercing crack, nothing like the push and BOOM I get from the 44 mag.
