Best out of the box?

I would tend to agree with Lawnboy, once you get past 600 yards, you are in a different type of world that requires a lot more skill than gun.

But to humor you (you still have 3 years to go) this is what I find fun.

Savage Model 11 GBT in .223

and a Savage Model 111 in 270

If you don't go crazy for long distances this is what you can do with either at 100 yards.

That 1000yd blurb really caught my eye. I'm sure the rifle it is appended to is very nice and pretty accurate. In certain hands it might be a 1000yd weapon. But the hands make it that.

I just like pointing out marketing hoo hah.

Ha Jim, that GBT is pretty nasty, but it looks expensive! As for that 111, do you like it? How much did it cost you...if you don't mind my askin?

For a few hundred dollars, Savage for sure. In fact, most any rifle these days is really darned accurate.

If you have more money you'll get a more accurate and better built rifle by going with a Sako. They are the most accurate out of the box rifles, when cost isn't a factor.

Slappy--You did not like the accutrigger???.. Why?. Did you set it to your liking?.
Both mine have it. Sighted in 3 other peoples rifles this year for deer hunting. 243,25-06 and a 30-06. None had accutrigger..I was so happy to get back to my Savages after that.

Lawnboy-That is true to a point. No matter how good you are if the gun is not you will not do 1000 yards. So to me it is a 50/50 split. You need the rifle and the hands to pull it off. I do believe it is a marketing move though too.

4runnerman, I liked the AccuTrigger just fine. I just wasn't overly excited by it. I don't see anything better about it than the trigger on my early '70s Winchester model 70 .243 or the Trigger on my Rugger 77 .270 mountain rifle, or many other well made rifles that I have now or have owned in the past. If there is any one thing I didn't like about it, it would be the little spring loaded doo-hickey in the middle of the trigger. Reminds me too much of a Glock, which I don't care much for at all.:):):)

It's cool slappy, was just wondering. My first Savage was pre accutrigger too. Took some getting used to,but after a while it was not an issue either.:) I have the 223 set to about 14 ozs and the 308 at just a smigen over 1 LB pull.

To the OP--Tikas are real good shooters too.

Haha because I can definitely afford a ballistics calculator hahaha!
So I think I'm gonna go with the savage model 12 FV in the .308, sound good?

FVSS ???..Awesome choice. My 223 is a FVSS and its almost scary how accurate it is.

4runnerman, do you use that for 12fvss for hunting or just target shooting? Is that a hbar? The specs look almost Identical to the 700 SPS except for the weight. The Rem. is 7.25lbs with 26" standard contour barrel and the 12FVSS is 8.75lbs with 26" barrel. Must be a hbar barrel contour?

Hello Slappy..All i do right now is bench shoot with it. It is my 100 to 300 yard Match rifle. I have gone out to 600 yards with it in a few matches, but decided to go with the 308 instead for that distance. Yes it is Hbrl rifle. I put a custom stock on it,bedded it and all. It Shot great with out the new stock too,but who can buy something and not deck it out some how:). I am going to go Coyote hunting with it this winter and have some fun.

Well, actually it's just the savage 12FV, sort of a less shiny, less pretty, and less expensive version of the FVSS. Should shoot just like it, the only problem is I've heard it doesn't come in a .308, but I hopefully can find one.

I would think it will shoot every bit as good. You will not be disapointed for sure. Let me know if ya get it in a 308. I have some great loads worked up for mine and they might work in yours too..

If not the .308 then what cal would you reccommend? Ha ya I hope so! I want to be able to keep these weapons for a loooong time?

Ya, hopefully I'll find one but I've heard .270 is a decent round as well. Ha ya, maybe I'll save up, but 200 bucks is alot to a middle class 15 year old with no job hahaha!
