Best out of the box?

Savage 11/111 FCNS or FHNS in .243 Winchester. Accustock, Accutrigger, good for anything from targets to deer to 1000 yard varmint shooting. Good barrel life also. Easy DIY barrel swap if you decide you want to try a different caliber, floating bolt face and company is based in Westfield, Massachusetts are just icing on the cake. You can pick one up for around 550 USD on the net.

To me that is cheaper than buying a 350 dollar Stevens then adding a aftermarket trigger and stock. To me the Remingtons are more of a crap shoot. 1 guy up at my club has one that he has sent back to the factory three times now because of bolt lug engagement problems from day 1. Another friend has a 700 that was shooting 3/8th inch groups during barrel break in. Of course I am sure all makers put out a occasional lemon.

Stevens huh? Do you think that's capable of a 6" group at 600m?

a Stevens 200 is a good build gun. Savage 10 action on a cheap stock and no Accutrigger. Find a used one for around 250 or so then add Timney or Rifle Basix trigger and aftermarket stock and you can have a heck of a shooter. To me though it is cheaper and easier to just get the 11/11 FCNS that comes with a good stock and trigger straight from the box

Another Savage Fan

I own a bunch of rifles but have been hunting almost exclusively with the two Savages I bought last year. They are ugly as sin and pretty heavy but none of the dead deer I have taken this year seemed to notice, plus I don't have to hump the thing around all day.

I bought a Model 10 Precision Carbine in .308 and love the gun, especially where hunting in tight spaces are concerned. It'll shoot .75-0.5 MOA all day long with mild recoil. The other on is a Model 10 Predator Brush in .243 and man is that a little tack driver. It has the Accutrigger but not the Accustock but will shoot .5 MOA or better depending on me. Easy on the recoil and everything I've sighted on has died right where it stood with the bullet right where I wanted it.

Get the Savage.

I did just purchase a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in 7mm08 but haven't shot it yet and have numerous modifications I'm preparing to do to it. Remington makes good rifles but all of them I've been around required a little bit of tweaking to get the most out of the gun.

Whatever you get, buy a quality optic/rings/bases to make the most of it.

308 is just a shortened 30-06. Better powders allowed for a smaller case. I would go with 308 as you rarely if ever find surplus for 06 anymore and the 308 is still a round used by nato.

I have only one Stevens. It's a .243 and is MOA right out of the box.

Alright guys, so the Remington is out of the running until I get an actual income and have the money to upgrade it. So I'm gonna go with a savage. The question is WHICH SAVAGE?!? Any ideas??

This is where you lose me. The Remington SPS (Special Purpose Synthetic) .308 with 26" standard contour barrel sells for $545 right now. That is cheaper than the Savage. What "upgrade" do you think you would need to do to it? It needs a scope. That's not an upgrade, it's a necessity.

Actually, at your age, what you need is a lot of practice. A Stevens, Howa etc. rifle would be the most practical thing you could buy. Something that you can get fairly inexpensively. You don't even need an expensive scope for punching paper. It shouldn't be getting much abuse just going to the range. I can nearly guarantee you that unless you are some sort of natural sharpshooter, any rifle you buy will be capable of much better accuracy than you are. Not trying to be tough on you or anything but, get yourself any good solid rifle and practice, practice, practice, and read everything you can about ballistics, trajectory etc. Have you ever fired a .308? I know I said earlier that it doesn't have much recoil but, I am 52 years old and have fired much larger calibers, many many times so, to me it doesn't have much recoil. You may feel differently. You may want to fire one a few times before buying into something that will make you flinch every time you pull the trigger.

Well, actually the one I'm looking at comes with a scope pre mounted, so does the savage. But I'd probly need to replace the stock and trigger, both are pretty cheap. Also savage just shoots a little better straight out of the box, and I really would love an accutrigger system. I know r700s are great, I just think savage would be best for what I'm doing.

Like I said in the post above I am partial to the 11/111 FCNS or FHNS. 7 lbs, good trigger, good stock and it can be found for around 550 to 600 dollars. 243 or 308 are 2 good all around calibers but the gun comes in over a dozen other ones if you don't like those from .223 to the Winchester short magnums.

Savage. Model 10 in .270 without accutrigger with Simmons 3x9 combo that I bought for my wife about 10 years ago from Wal-Mart for $350. Maybe 5 rounds to get it "dialed in" where she likes it, 1" high at 100yrds.

I take it if she's not going with me. Shoulda bought 2.:)

Hounddog-Alright, cool thanks. Any way you could give me some specs on the .308?
BUFF- Oh cool, ya I looked at some model 10s and they seem great for being that cheap!

AccuTrigger is just a name, just like the X Mark Pro adjustable trigger on the Remington. As far as which one shoots better out of the box, you are basing your statement on other peoples opinion, which may or may not be correct Until you have shot them both , you really don't know what you will like. There are some right here in this thread who say they didn't really care for the Accu Trigger. I had one in a .17 HMR and liked it ok but, it wasn't all that. There are plenty of rifles out there with adjustable triggers that you may like better.

Ya, you're absolutely right about that, and I'd love to have the opportunity to shoot both! But until I have the cash to buy the second rifle, I just need to buy one for now and all the gunsmiths and long range shooters I have talked to seem to think the savage is a tad bit better out of the box. I'm sure I'll eventually buy a 700. Either varmint or police.

Don't get me wrong, I like Savages as well, I am basically trying to decide between a Savage and a Remington for my next rifle in .308 (or a 6.5Grendel upper for my AR). I just hate to see someone your age sink money into a rifle that you end up not liking and being turned off by the whole shooting sport because of it. Are there not any ranges around that rent out rifles so that you could try out some different models and calibers? BTW, if you get a chance, look up the Savage Model 14 American Classic. Beautiful Gun.

savage 11 FCNS - detachable box magazine FNHS hinged floor plate

both are 6.9 pounds and have the accutrigger and aluminum bedded accustock

308 is 1 in 10 twist 22 inch barrel

BTW slappy I have nothing against Remington. My first non military surplus hunting guns were a Woodsmaster and a 700 BDL both in 30 - 06.

Also if you don't like the accutrigger for some reason drop a Timney or Rifle Basix in it for less than 100 dollars, but then you could do that with the Remmy also

and actually if you want to build a custom gun for yourself you could do a Stevens 200, add one of the above triggers and a 200 dollar aftermarket stock for about the same price as the Savage.

Slappy- ya, I'm really interested in shooting alot, so I'm sure I won't be turned off either way, but thanks for your input and concern, I do like remingtons a lot, and lm sure ill buy quiteba few in my future. Ya, I dont think so but ill look around and see if I can't find somewhere.
Hounddog- thanks a lot, I really want to find something with a 26" heavy barrel though. But I still may end up settling on a 111

The first New centerfire rifle I ever bought was a Remington 600 in .308 with 18 1/2" barrel. I wish I still had it. They sell for a mint these days. Anyway, that little short rifle really seemed to beat me up when I was 20 years old and weighed about 175lbs.

After a lot of research, I am planning on buying a Savage 10 FCP-K,
for around 750.00, it's supposed to be a 1000 yard rifle out of the box.It has accu stock, accu trigger, 24" fluted barrel with integrated muzzle brake.
Check it out on Google and on the sniper forums.
BTW, You can also get 10 round .308 aftermarket magazines that fit it

I've read thru this whole thread. I cannot believe that I am going to be the first to call BS on this.

There are many rifle/cartridge combinations that can propel a projectile in excess of 1000yds. There are few people who can use them effectively to engage targets, paper or otherwise, at that range.

Calling any rifle a 1000yd rifle right out of the box is marketing hoo hah.
