Being outed.

People in Arkansas not anti-gun? You mean like, I dunno, THE CLINTONS? Seriously!?

You don't know who's anti-gun but it generally is political, not rational and on. So, there's a liklihood the next Democrat you speak to (at least a third of the population) is anti-gun, anti YOU.
Yes, seriously. The Clintons were the exception rather than the rule here in Arkansas.

Political parties and people registered to them are not antigun.... but starting that kind of argument is a good way to get an otherwise worthwhile thread locked.

A party is not anti-gun? You've GOT to be kidding.

Gun control is a PLANK of one. So much so that, when facts get in the way, the Administration ran guns to Mexican drug cartels to PROVE rights must be curtailed where they originated -- HERE! Such an aspect of being "outed" is fundamental to this thread. And if we aren't pragmatic and adult enough to acknowledge that personal anti-gun sentiment has a high correlation to party affiliation and that that bias can have profound effects on 2nd Amendment defenders in every aspect of their life then what's the point of having the thread anyway?

Who here would be foolish enough to give a resume that says they're an active member of The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms to a prospective hiring manager they know is a Democrat?

Better to lock and ERASE the thread than deny (the whole) truth.

Frankly, I can't follow your line of reasoning at all. And I've read Kerouac. The point of this thread is articulated in the first post:

How do you deal with being outed to anti-gun people?

That's a good question, and one that can be answered without breaking forum rules.

Frankly, I shoot and associate with people of all stripes, and from all walks of life. Some don't particularly care for guns, so I don't drag them shooting or leave copies of gun magazines in their car. It's not a big issue, as we have other things in common.

There are influential and active pro-gun people on both sides of the aisle, as well as anti-gunners. Party affiliation might have some influence, but it isn't as black-and-white as many would have us believe.

Heck, I even associate and shoot with liberal Danish bass players, every so often...

And my blue state, techie brother-in-law enjoys shooting when he visits.

I can even think of some theoretically conservative types who have voted for various gun control legislation over the years.

While it might be disingenuous to deny trends between the major parties, with regards to firearms law, it would be foolish to make blanket statements or assumptions. There are quite a lot of exceptions to the theoretical rules.

Most of the people I associate with consider themselves to be very liberal, as I consider myself. Over the last few years getting a CC permit (no small effort here in NY) and carrying a gun has become much more accepted, and many of them have done it. Thus being "outed" in this crowd isn't such a big deal as it was a few years ago. I think this is true across the country as well. My interest in guns of all sorts has been well known among these folks since the beginning, I've had a CC permit here in NY for 35 years. Lately I've been asked for advice many times as to which handgun, what caliber, how to carry it, etc. for self defense, which signals a shift in their attitudes toward being in favor of CC which makes being "outed" no cause for an argument. We all agree we won't join the NRA because of its marriage to right-wing politics we find odious, so there's no politics attached to being outed and thus no arguments on that issue either. It's a new world!

Without dragging us too far off-topic, it is possible to change the NRA from within. It's been done before.

I don't mind being thought of as Pro gun, but a gun "nut" boils my oil. i don't CC cause I don't go into areas where the chances are not even a little bit above negligible. If I did, and I got my CHL. it would be my secret, my wife if she found out it would be by accident. most antigun people are misinformed to the facts anyway. and like politico's you can't change a closed mind.

Well, in the area where I live, owning firearms isn't a big deal or even particularly unusual so by extension being "outed" isn't really a big deal. That being said, I don't advertise my interest partly because I don't want to increase my risk of being targeted for theft and partly because I really don't think it's anyone else's business, but I don't go out of my way to hide my hobby either.

If "outed" to someone who is anti-gun, I'm more than willing to have a rational discussion about it, but at the end of the day if no one's mind is changed then I politely tell them that we must agree to disagree. If said person cannot civilly agree to disagree, then I really don't much care what they think of me anymore anyway.

At my last job (blissfully retired now), I outed myself, using an insulated cup with a big NRA on the side to let people know where I stood on the issue of the 2A ... I was amazed by 1. the number of people who stopped by my desk or sat down with me at lunch to talk guns and 2. that I got not one bit of grief from any anti-gunners, tho there must have been at least one in the place ... If it comes up, I'll talk guns with anyone interested, and debate anyone who's opposed ... however, I have never been outed when carrying, and I keep the number of people who know I do very limited ...

I immediately throw myself into a ninja crouch with the wall to my back and scream " LOOK OUT YOU expletive deleleteds, I'VE GOT A GUN".
Puts a real cap on an otherwise boring day. :D
