Being outed.

I don't have a problem with people outing as long as it is done in a tactful manner that sheds light on gun owners and not a dark shadow.
That's my problem with "outing" per se. It was generally done against the person's wishes, and with the intent of causing them distress.

I don't always want someone knowing I have a gun, and discussing it should be my choice.

This reminds me of a thread on CompuServe's Outdoor forum quite a few years back.

Some Guy who was carrying concealed was with his wife and her parents having supper at a restaurant. After dinner, they were in the parking lot heading for their car when they were accosted by a belligerent who was verbally abusive to them.

The mother-in-law looked at Guy and said, "Why don't you shoot him?"

:D

First, let me say this up front: I drive a Volvo. In fact, we have three Volvos.

We have had employees here who proudly displayed trophies on their walls. One had a bear's skull, which frankly is an unusual and not especially attractive trophy. But in any case, it must have been a small bear and I think of it every time I see a thread about defending yourself from bears. So around here it's no problem, though guns are specifically forbidden in the employee handbook. Even so, one former employee claimed to have killed a deer (bow) from the loading dock. I believe him, too, because deer are common around here, though bears are quite scarce.

One of the problems here and people may argue the point, is that being pro-gun or anti-gun is easily confused with one's opinions and positions on other issues and there really doesn't have to be any direct correlation, at least if you think for yourself and don't follow the party line (which is what you call being politically correct).

Do-gooder? Do all the good you can and make no fuss about it! Don't just be good: do good.

I am as vocal as I can be about guns and gun rights and I work actively to change minds and take people to the range where I can teach them in a appropriate and safe environment.... I pay for everything thing but the gas for them to get there and all I expect is for them to be open minded and follow instructions.. For their time they learn the basics of gun safety and the major components of a gun and the most basic things about shooting and they get to shoot with my close supervision....

'Round here (where I live!), folks get "outed" as being anti-gun!
Yer either a felon or an "anti" 'round these parts if you are without firearms for the most part... Both of which are severely in the minority... THANKFULLY!!!

'round here where I live, I stay IN the closet!:D

I'm attending a famous industrial design college where gun stigma is very very strong, that faculties are openly anti-guns. Period.
(equally interesting that 2 of our famed alumni Mike Bay and Zack Snyder are all about worshiping incredible explosions and gunfights on the silver screen)
Converting others is not possible. I have identified just about 3 other students who are as 'inclined' as I am. And maaan, do we chat silently or what!
However, bow hunting/sporting is acceptable.

So far we've got "nazis" and "liberals." This thread is veering dangerously close to getting shut down.

If we want to describe how to overcome the stigmatization of gun owners, fine. But when a thread lurches straight into Godwin territory by page 2, things aren't looking good.

im sorry for greasing the lock-rails

My point was, when an anti gunner thinks gun, he thinks bad guys in Indiana Jones and E.T.

When he thinks bow, he thinks people competing, learning discipline, having fun...

the same things we think of when we think gun (and/or bow)

My point wasnt really about nazis and hippies, i just pulled a strong word out of a hat, and that was probably inappropriate.

My point was, FIREARMS specifically are demonized by these people, beyond any other weapon, bows included. And i think they are taught this behavior by the media.

I apologize for the 'yuppie' comment...

There are only two stores in this town; one you can buy a six of PBR, and a Pickled Polish Sausage, and the other you can buy a $6 bottle of some micro brew, and goat cheese...Only one sells gas...

The Woman I mentioned that runs that store has no issue with me wearing a sidearm openly (perfectly legal here), and found the incident funny...

I have no clue what the woman in the Volvo had for a political bent, and again I apologize if it came across like that...

I don't associate with anti-gun people. I simply avoid any contact with them. I'm perfectly happy with a smaller circle of friends and acquaintances.

Sadly with new ownership we have; it has brought an influx of people who, while not old enough to have lived through the 60's seem to wish it was the 60's all over again.

There are 3 other gun owners where I work and besides the one who is probably a future spree shooter(long story), I tend to talk about guns/gun related things with the other two guys. I do NOT just openly talk about guns with anyone or really talk about it much at all at work, usually it is a discussion at lunch.

In regards to not "associating" with anti gun people I do not associate with strongly anti gun people either. I do associate with non gun owners though.

well from where I live, Hollywood is a stone's throw away. It's just mind bending how we have such an extreme double-standard here. You CAN watch, but CAN'T touch...also CAN'T buy ammo (if you live in L.A. anyway).
I bet the firearm possession ratio between thugs vs.civilian is closer to 100 : 1.
But of course, we've got das LAPDs:D

It wouldn't bother me one iota.

A better question is, how would an anti-gunner feel if they were outed to me?

"Outing" in this context usually means antigunners who are exposed as closet gunowners or hypocrites-Carl Rowan, e.g.
I have adopted one practice recommend by Dean Grenell and do not have any NRA or gun related bumper sticks on my vehicles.
