Anybody getting extremely frustrated ammo hunting?

Can't find any 9mm or .380 locally. Found about 50 boxes of .40 (combined at about 3 different stores), but I reload .40 and have components. I reload 9mm too, so it's not a huge deal, but I just recently started looking for .380 and I can't even seem to find reloading components for it...

.32acp is another I might need to start reloading for, and possibly .357SIG. Still waiting to get a Corbin swaging setup to make .223 bullets from spent .22lr cases. I figure, make what you can to make up for what you can't buy.

gb_in_ga, please share with the rest of us your primers source that lists a specific date of shipment. NOONE I can find, local or on the net has a freakin clue when they will get primers. I'm not willing to pay hazmat fees now, but that will change if this madness continues.

Tuesday I stopped by there store and they had more primers (Winchester) than I have ever seen in one location.
The lady behind there counter said that primers manufactures are picking up the pace and demand is starting to taper off. She also said that they have shipped over 2 million since the first of the year. I picked up two cases, large and small pistol (10,000)
They are a very good mail order store and have a quick turnaround.

A Dick's Sporting opened today in West Palm and had ammo of every caliber but, what I wanted, .40 cal, $19.95 for 50. I did buy ten five round boxes of 00 Buck at $5.99 a box. Went to Gander Mountain, .40 cal $59.95 a 100. I guess I'll have to start loading my own.

I haven't been too frustrated with the search for ammo.

A few friends of mine and I have worked out a habit of stopping by our local Wal-Marts for ammo to see what they've got, and buying what we want and splitting it between us. Last week my friend stopped by a store to see if they have 9mm Blazer but they were out. Happened to be 30+ boxes of .45 Blazer on the shelf and he called me to come buy it. Showed up about 15 minutes later and there was about 10 boxes left which I bought. Just a few days ago I randomly stopped by a WW that I hadn't been to in a while and saw the lady at the counter calling people on a list. Empty shelves, but saw a few cases of Blazer in a cart. Overheard her say that they had 9mm in stock, waited for her to hang up and told her I'd take the case, about 20 boxes. Asked about the other box, was about 15 boxes of .45 and told her I'd take all of it too. I'm getting ready to check out, a whole five minutes later, and a group of the people that she just called were there to pick up the ammo. Didn't seem too happy watching a young'n walking off with all that gear, lol.

Ended up trading the 9mm to one of my friends for a couple hundred rounds of .223, so everything's worked out fine for us.

Ammo is scarce:

Just went to a gunshow yesterday here in Florida. Thousands of people attended on opening day (with a waiting line around the bldg)...

Bottom line, they purchased tons of ammo before I could even get in the facility. I was just planning to buy (3) boxes each of .45acp, 9mm, .380acp,
.38 special and .357 magnum. I try and do this each and every gun show and have started to build up a good stockpile over the past couple years. Problem is, everyone is now buying it by the case (I can't blame them) and/or 10-15 boxes at a time so when you finally get there, most of it is already gone. Same for Wal-Mart, other sporting goods stores.
What is unbelievable, is I read where major mfgs of ammo such as Winchester, Remington and Federal have (24 hr. shifts) churing out ammo nonstop and still can't keep up with the demand from gunowners......

Yep, and the hoarding continues.

At least I leave some for the next guy, I guess that's because I'm Minnesota nice.:D

Hahaha, nice try. Like I said, my friends and I buy the ammo, and split it up between us and by definition of hoarding, we save for future use because we actually like going to the range to shoot.

So come off your mighty high horse once in a while, comrade, the weather's not THAT bad down here

Oh my, sweet mother of holy vomit inducing crap what the heck is that thing?!?!?! Ugh, need more beer to make it go away.

On to the ammo hoarding/purchasing discussion, it's just a self-perpetuating virus; until people realize that ammo isn't oxygen nothing will improve.

IMHO, the people who are most aggravated by the shortage are those who do not routinely keep inventory in their ammo dump at all times. I can't really understand why some shooters use JIT inventory practices with something like ammunition but some of them do.

To me it's not such a big deal, I have (at current rates of consumption) probably a year or two worth of ammunition and components at this time. If I see ammo at a price I'm willing to pay I buy it and add to my supply.

finally found some .380 at dicks the other day, went to buy 4 boxes (left 3 on the shelf) and WHOOPS...my CC was expired. Damn my luck

Scored

Wow does that title just sound wrong posting it. Seems almost like I got something illegal or something. Anyways to the heart of the matter.

Hit the local Wally World and found some of the very elusive WWBVPs in 9mm grazing in the sporting goods section of the store. I passed another hunter on my way to see what grazed and it appeared from his sack that he took less than the bag limit it of WWBVP .40. But upon my inspection of the field he slaughtered the herd of that beast. I followed the hunters code and took the beasts that I would consume in a resonable timeframe leaving behind 7 WWBVP 9m, 1 WWB 45 and 1 WWB .40.

The best part of it is I got out for a tickle under 20 cents a round. Glad I found some of these as I was under an IPSC match level or a range trip. Now I just need to find some Federal Champion .22LR Value Packs and I will be all set. The "nearby" Cabelas was out and even out of the substitute for them due to the sale that they had running. Just going to have to keep stalking the Wally Worlds I guess or pony up for the Blazer .22LR that the local range has or some CCI Mini-Mag HV's.

I was in one of my favorite gun shops yesterday shooting the breeze and was told they keep what little .380 they have out of sight so they can sell a box to each purchaser of a .380. Not a bad idea; who would buy a gun without any ammo.

The things you find out when you've been a customer for 37 years.

Swimming in ammo?

.45 is getting pretty high. 26/28$$for 50 fmj. Not a lot of .22 in bricks. Your rationed 1 or 2 bricks when it comes in. Or you can have all you want at 30$ in smaller stores. But when I hear theres a shortage on 9mm; we got mountains of it but your gonna pay 16 to 18 bucks for GI Joe stuff. Wally world has got cheap 9mm but they never get any. And when they do you got to stand in line for your one or two boxes.

After multiple trips to the local gun shop and Wally World, I placed an order on line March 18th. Was supposedly on backordered "1-2" weeks. At the end of two weeks, I was told it would be an additional "1-2" weeks. Lame.

I ended up buying 9mm from a guy while I was at a golf tournament. I just got a new Kahr PM9, and I had been dying to shoot it. I got 3 boxes of ammo.......but they ran me $27 a box! Ouch. Desperate times call for desperate measures I guess.

I ordered the pistol, two FIST holsters, a Center Of Mass Car Safe, and an extra magazine as well as Pearce Grip extensions at the same time I ordered the ammo. Everything is in but the ammo.:mad::mad:

I think the reason for rationing is primarily about keeping customers coming back. If every time I go to your store you are out of ammo and I know it's because people come on the day the shipments arrive and buy up cases at a time I'm going to stop coming in so I'm not going to be paying fees to use the range, buying targets, cleaning supplies, an impulse firearm, grips, etc. If I know that you limit the ammo so there is a least a chance of me getting some then you keep me coming back and increase the chances that I'll buy something else. The stores can sell all the ammo they can get. It only makes sense to use it to generate as much traffic into the store as possible to move other merchandise and services.
