Anybody getting extremely frustrated ammo hunting?

Only buy what you NEED to shoot.
Over what period of time?

I know people that regularly shoot several thousand rounds a month. Should they have to buy ammo 5 boxes at a time just like the guy that shoots 100 rounds a year?

I say buy what you want in whatever quantities you want (or can afford). The supply/demand situation will work itself out eventually.

I used to shoot 2 or 3 times a week about 500 rounds now I am down to once a week. Can't find the ammo or the reloading components and the way the prices are couldn't afford to do it any how.:eek: But did buy a case of 9MM this week:) And no I didn't buy them out had at least 8 more cases and lots of box's on the shelf

Well someone heard my bitching because my local Dicks got in 3 500rd cases this morning when I had called. When I got there only 2 were left. So I scored 1,000 Remington UMC 45ACP for $359otd. I'm good till May now!

I was in Bass Pro on Monday night and they had 20-30 boxes of Winchester SXZ personal protection ammo and 10-20 boxes of the SXZ training ammo in 9mm .40 and .45. I didn't buy any and went back the next day and all the 9mm was gone. All the .40 training was gone and all but 2 of the .45 training was gone. There were still about 15 boxes of the .40 personal protection and about 20 boxes of the .45 pp left. I was kicking myself for not getting some of the cheaper .40 when it was there. The Wal Mart by my house never seems to have anything except the more unusual calibers.

Call Dillon - and order a loader ( I like the 650 model ).

components are available - not as plentiful as they once were / but you need to figure out who can get you components in case quantities and order thru them locally. In my handguns I use Montana Gold bullets (they have a website ), Hodgond powder - TiteGroup for handguns, and CCI primers ( in my area Sportsman's warehouse and Cabellas both have them / as well as some independent gunshops ). A case of primers is 5,000 so you buy a couple of cases / powder comes in an 8 lb keg - so buy a couple of 8 lb kegs when you find them / always buy bullets in case lots of 2,000 - 3,750 depending on caliber and grain you want .....

I realize that some people folks shoot more than others–I shoot roughly 1000 rounds per month–but I would gladly shoot less if it would mean that there would be more ammo for others. I reload my own, so I make sure that if I do buy components from a store, I don't clear them out. I was taught to share with others, even if it caused me an inconvenience.

I'm not discouraging buying ammo to shoot–it's the senseless hoarding of ammo that I find unreasonable and selfish.

Ammo is scarce:

Just stopped by a usually well stocked and popular gun store in my home town. Bought their last two boxes of Remington .38 Special JHP. None left after that. Problem was, I had to pay $40/box of 50...
Is that normal for this type of ammo nowadays? I knew it had gone up in the last few months but did not know that much (as I have a lot of ammo stored up in the last few years).

I am from near Cols. Ohio. I cant find any 9mm any where. Been to several walley-smarts and no good. Vances is out, Gander, Buckeye sports, and none at small gun shops. Frustrating, bought a new 9mm and cant even shoot it.

That's expensive for 50 rounds. My guess it that it was high because it's JHP. I know at my local store I can get regular old FMJ 40 S&W for about $16 for 50, but if would buy 50 JHP rounds, the price shoots up to $45-ish.

Before I started reloading, I was buying Winchester white box 230grn .45 ACP fmj for $20.99 at a local shop this week I was in there and they are now $30 a box. I am glad that I found primers.

.22 bulk packs have gone up $5 to $10 around here too.

How do you know it is hoarding?

I belong to a gun club and I am seeing a lot of members down there shooting that are not normally shooting. And our open to the public shooting sessions are packed.

It may be that more ammo is being shot up.

Besides, just how much ammo do you think one has to have before it is "hoarding"?

I don't see it as selfish either. Everyone takes the same chance when you go to WalMart to look for ammo.

Yep it is frustrating and that is why i just ordered enough reloading supplies to load a couple thousand rounds. But even that is getting hard to come by.

Reloading has no advantage if you can't find primers.

You can get primers if:

> you are willing to order them online and
> you are willing to pay the going rate for them, including shipping and HAZMAT and
> you are willing to wait while they are backordered.
