I have the HKUSP 40 full-size and love it.

Bought it for a song:
Gun (<300 rounds, yep, it has the polygonal barrel)
Desantis Holster
2-10 round mags
2-13 round mags :D
New in box Trijicon nite-sights
Manual, warranty, case
Hogue slip-on grip
$450

German engineering at it's finest.

Oh yeah, is it tough? Check this out.

Easy choice....CZ 75 .40

Image is of a 9mm version (I couldn't find a picture of the .40 CZ 75) They look very similar however.

I'd say go with the Walther P99 or Sig P229 or G23.

I have all three (well a G32 in .357 Sig but that's the same size) and they are all equals to each other in reliability. Okay, the 229 has much more ammo through it in both .40S&W and .357 Sig the the G32 and P99 combined, but all three have proven themselves to be utter reliable and combat accurate.

In formal accuracy, the 229/P99 are more accurate then the G32 but nothing woth mentioning.

Cost wise, in my parts the Glock lines are less expensive then either the Sig or the Walther so that's consideration.

I personally would vote for the Sigs. P226,P229, or even the small P239. I love my P239 and you can always get the .357 SIG barrell and change it out if you want something different.

Glock 23 BABY!!!:D

There is another thread going on (I don't remember where) where a lot of people have mentioned that the CZ is one of the most underrated guns on the market. You could look into that.

I personally like the look of my Glock but most people don't. You can take your choice of either of the butt-ugly guns.:D

I had the same decision to make about a year ago and decided on the Sig 229. But you don't want to know what I picked, you want to know why.

I didn't like the Glock's trigger. Too short and easy on the first pull, and too long and gritty on the second.(as you can tell, I like DA/SA) Otherwise, I liked the all-around function of the Glock.(just couldn't hit the center of the target with that trigger)

I didn't like the feel of the HK grip, though I could have changed that. The main problem with the HK was the safety. I don't want a safety on my "house" gun. Only one thing I want my house gun to do, and that is to go bang when I pull the trigger. I simply don't want a safety on my house gun.

I loved the DA/SA of the Sig 229, as well as the quality of the gun as a whole. The weight, feel, and point of the gun are all very natural to me, and the controls all feel "right".

Other guns I liked include the Witness, CZ75, and Berretta, but none of them made it to the final round. Just make sure you find a few you think you like, and then try them all together and compare them side by side.

Good luck,

No "full size" (4 in bbl or longer?) gun that I am aware of was designed from the ground up as a 10 rounder. The full size 40s are mostly based on full size 9s which hold 15 rounds or more.

Considering the Beretta 96, SIG 226, Glock 22 and HK USP are all about the same size, I do not see any good reason to pick the Beretta soley cuzz it started in 40 as a 10 rounder, the SIG a 12 rounder, the USP a 13 rounder, the Glock a 15 rounder.

All the above have passed obstructed bore tests in 40 BTW.

All have been T&Ed by federal agencies and/or large city/county/state agencies and passsed. Glock seems to be the favorite by sales. The FBI, DEA, US Marshals seem to favor Glock 40s, as does the staff at the FLETC (Fed Law Enf Trng Center) who see them all shot quite a bit. The NLECTC/NIJ (Natl Law Enf and Corections Tech Cntr/Natl Inst Justuce) have T&D and passed the Glock, SIGs, S&Ws and Rugers.

The new Beretta 9000 was designed as a 10 rounder in 40, as was the Steyr S series (compact) IIRC, but I haven't seen any impartial/objective official T&E yet on either one yet.

The SIG 229, Glock 23, USPc would be the ones I looked at seriously in smaller (or full size) guns. They have the best track record so far. The SW4006, SW99/Walther P99 are worth a good look too. Nothing wrong w Beretta or Ruger, I just prefer the others.

Everybody has a preference, all of em will do the job.

Attn: David Berkowitz

David, if you use a Glock 23 magazine and A&G Adapter you will swear the Glock 27 is a Compact pistol. It doesn't get much better. The only 40 S&W I prefer is the Browning High-Power MKIII. Regards, Richard

Berkowitz

Is that Son of Sam s--- supposed to be a joke, Richard? Berkowitz was a multiple murderer. He stalked and murdered totally innocent kids. I don't think that we have ever gotten the total truth on this business either. I think that Berkowitz was involved in a satanic cult. Others were also involved in the murders.

Thanks for the history lesson Werewolf...

But if you would pay attention, you would see that he was responding to a poster who goes by "David Berkowitz."

Browning Hi-Power is the way to go. Beautifully finished, absolutely reliable, accurate and the .40 was designed as a 10-round gun.

Unfortunately, they are getting hard to find.

I highly recommend the Walther P-99, mine is great to shoot. I just got a Sig 229, which is also a great .40 pistol, except mine is a .357sig

If you like 1911-style pistols, Kimber makes a couple chambered in 40SW. I have the Pro Carry in 40. It has a 4in barrel and an aluminum alloy frame which makes it very light and comfortable to carry. It does seem to increase the felt recoil, but I can control mine fine even with my spaghetti arms. The factory mags (Mecgar) hold 8 rounds, McCormick 10mm mags hold 9 and work just fine.

Wow, 3+ pages of recommendations and this is the only mention of Kimber. Maybe I should be worried. Maybe I'll just buy another, that should improve my dispositon.

I have both, in the same caliber. While my Glock has been 100% reliable, the Steyr sickened me with a never-ending list of problems. The fit, finish, and overall quality of the two can't be even closely compared. The only thing about Steyr I truly like is its sights and the low bore axis, period.

Sounds like you got an odd lemon (every gun maker has one slip through once in a while...even Glock :) ) you're the only person I've heard complain about quality issues from an M40.

I've had zero problems with my M40. Mine is an early one too (serial number in the mid 5000s). The previous owner had the trigger upgrade done, which is something to make sure of with any M40 with a serial number under 10000.

Compared to the Glock 23 it's an excellent choice (not that the G23 is a bad choice).

For me the ergonomics are much better then the Glock (but that varries from person to person) and it's more accurate them I am.

H&K USP .40 S&W. In my opinion, the best .40 on the market.

Kiffster,

I'm sure you're aware of this, but the H&K USP can be configured to be DA only with no safety. According to an H&K rep I spoke with recently, this configuration change can be made to any USP variant for $25.
