I am in the market for a mid to full size pistol chambered in .40 S&W. I want something that was designed from the ground up specifically to hold 10 rounds or less. Any recommendations?

Thanks.

CZ75 Accurate, reliable and built for the 40 S&W. If it fits your hand it's hard to beat for the price. Normally $350 NIB

If you're looking more towards mid-size than full size, the Witness compact fits the bill. $279 locally, I've ordered one last week, waiting anxiously. It's a copy of the CZ, but only their full size is available in 40SW, not the compact.

I've got witness in .40 S&W with the wonderfinish, and love it. I've fired a couple thousand rounds through it without any problems whatsoever.

Glad to hear that its worked well viper. I have a Witness 45 poly compact, decided I wanted an all-steel gun. The 9mm and 40 are thinner than the 45 so I went that way. Does the Wonderfinish hold up well, better than bluing?

I suggest the Beretta 96F. Its original magazine configuration holds 10 rounds. (Yes, I know there's also an 11-rounder for the 96, but it has an extended floorplate.)

The 96 is a world-class pistol with, in my experience, typical Beretta reliability. Fun to shoot, and plenty of pride of ownership, too. :)

What type of trigger action do you like? Do you want external safeties? What will you be doing with the gun? What level of accuracy is important? How large is your hand? What guns do you presently like to use in the roll that this one will occupy?

ASG; On the less expensive side I would recommend the Ruger P-94- stone cold reliable and durable. More expensive I would say the Beretta 96. Never owned a Glock 40 so I can't comment. Best, J. Parker

While I have a Glock 27, I would also recommend that you look at the Steyr M40. I bought mine this weekend, and the Austrian quality is top-notch. I paid $459 for my M40, which is less than what the new glocks are going for. It has an external safety (which is very easy to disengage) and a loaded chamber indicator, if you're looking for these features. The selling points for me were the very comfortable grips and high quality.

I think the Glock 27 is a great gun, but does not fit in the mid to full size classification. G22 or 19, but not 23.
I don't know if the Sig 229 was originally built for the 40 S&W. I think it was. Mine is clearly the best 40 I have ever fired.

I agree with the recommendations of the Ruger P94. I had a Glock 22, but didn't like the way it sat in my hand. My brother is coming home this week so I'll get to try out his new G27. At the gunstore the other night I got to hold the G23 and it did feel better than the G22 to me. But, like I said you can't go wrong with the Ruger, only if they made a polymer model in .40 cal.

USP 40. Accurate, Strong, Tactical, and easy on brass...well centered round primer strikes with no case bulging whatsoever. Tree Rat.

Beretta Cougar 8040 ;)

I would give a long look at the Browning High-Power MKIII in 40 S&W. It is accurate and has low felt recoil. It is my favorite. I would like to take the "Son of Sam" to task. I am willing to bet David Berkowitz that he would take a liking to my Glock 27. It has night sights and an A&G adapter for Glock 23 magazines. With the 23 magazine and adapter it feels like my Glock 23. If you need a longer barrel it will accept a Glock 23 barrel. This little pistol can do anything a full sized 40 can do. Regards, Richard.

Glock 35. It's definately full size and not mid, but it's a very comfortable and accurate firearm.

That would be my choice as well since the G35 is my carry gun, however, the original poster stated that he wanted a gun that was built from the ground up as a 10 rounder. The G35 is based on the 22 frame which started life as a 15 rounder. In this case, I'd have to go with the Beretta 96 or the Hi Power.
