Don't dislike the .40, just prefer the .45ACP in an automatic. Don't care too much for "modern" guns but they do have their place.

I had an xd40sc and liked it well enough. It was reliable and accurate. There is nothing wrong with .40 for accuracy or recoil.

I like traditional 1911's and I like polymer frame hi-caps. I see no use for the .40 in either, save exploiting the occasional loophole in competitive shooting. I see it as an incremental change over 9mm and a sales act for law enforcment more than anything.

The ONLY thing a quality JHP.40 round does measureably better than a quality JHP 9mm round is maintain truer trajectory though intermediate barriers such as auto glass. And the .45 Auto does it appreciably better than the 9mm or .40 anyhow, has for 100 years.

Between the snappy recoil, pressure sensitivity, relatively small change in characteristics over 9mm, etc. I doubt I'll ever own another .40

All you revolver weenies:

S&W makes their 610 revolver which can fire 10mm or .40S&W. So technically, you aren't left out. You just favor "9mm magnum" (.357) or .44/.45 offerings instead.

I think Dan Wesson also made one for awhile, too.

I wanted to vote "I have owned about half a dozen .40s, but no longer own any, and it's likely to stay that way".
I also wanted to answer "I have an inate distrust and dislike of of rotary-winged aircraft in general, bred through many years of experience"...but neither option existed.
And yeah, for what it's worth, I do own 1911s (and revolvers) as well...

I have a big, heavy, steel-framed Taurus .40 that I like as a range toy, but prefer a .357 revolver for serious work. I am contemplating a polymer compact (XD or M&P) in said caliber for easier carrying... but am wary of polymer guns as a matter of principle. What worries me is S&R and Local News choppers. I personally think they figured out that we were looking for dark colors and changed tactics to misdirection.

So, no viable poll option for me. I voted for the top option, as I do own one and I scrutinize any chopper rigorously!

Nothing against it just don't own one. 45acp meets my needs better. I do load for 40 cal because my brother has two USPs in that caliber. I have to keep him in fodder! I tend to shoot 45acp, 38spl, 9mm most of the time. Throw in the 44s, 45 Colt, 357 Mag and some 380 now and then for spice, all bullets cast and ammo loaded by me. I RARELY bust a cap on a 40 cal, no real reason, just don't seem to shoot them.

My department issues the .40. Its the one round I can use for free at the range in both my duty gun and my off duty gun (within reason...50-100 rounds a month or so)

If my department issued 9mm...my off duty gun would be a 9mm...same for .45....45 GAP.....357 SIG...whatever. I think when you get into premium ammo from any reputable ammo company...its all pretty much a wash...and STILL comes down to bullet placement...

I own 1911s, also own and shoot "modern" handguns, revolvers, etc...

I have owned (note past tense) .40 S&Ws.

Problem with those helicopters, is that when it is dark outside they all look the same, dark!

And since no one has said it... yet, and owning several 10mm guns, your "fortay" has been measured and found, well, lacking. (But don't feel too badly, I have owned, again note past tense, 9mm also.)

YMMV

And what about the option to trust those dark helicopters? Maybe they are coming to take some of us home?

The only helicopters you can trust are red & white with a cross on the side. "Medivac" As for .40s Ya gotta lovem!!! not too small not too big. Now if they could just do something with a .50, that would be nifty.

In nine years, I have done a complete 180 on the .40S&W cartridge. Back then I thought it was da bomb. Now, I don't see the point. With heavy bullets, it's almost as prone to setback as the .45, but doesn't have the case capacity for a safety margin. With light bullets, it doesn't perform any better than the 9x19.

Meh. :o

I have two ss S&Ws in .40... like shooting them both... nothing wrong with the caliber...far as the choppers....I dont trust anything in the sky swarming round and round that is larger than my Honda civic...which means I dont even like some a them larger moths round here.

I don't have a .40 because..................

I guess I'm just not a middle of the road kind of guy. However if they ever figure out how to cram 20 rounds of .40 inside of a pistol grip and get the price down to that of cheap wolf 9mm, I'm all over it.:D
