Just to emphasize a point made by Sturm, I watched a CSI: NY (yes I know, only TV) and in the episode, a guy wanted to do away with his wife with an obviously smaller caliber handgun. The first shot the idiot missed her all together and the second shot gave her a headache!

I'll go for the larger caliber if I had the opportunity to carry concealed.

A gun is a gun. Carry one if you wish, dont beleive that you "need" your tactically45with2reloadsandlaserlight unless your particular circs demand...which for most of us don't exist.

.25 actually has more power than a .22 from a 2" barrel. .25 is more apt to feed well in a small autoloader. Most people don't want to get shot-even with a .25. Most people, when shot (even with a .25) will at least go away.
Zombies are not affected by the .25, so you need a big, tacticool gun for them.

Sorry, you're better off with a .22 LR than a .25 Auto.

My feelings exactly. Loaded up with some CCI Stingers, even a .22 mousegun is pretty good. .22s are much cheaper to practice with, and we all know shot placement is the most important thing with any handgun. No .25s for me.

While the .25acp will do the job, if all of the cosmic space-time events fall into the correct alignment, I'd rather not trust it!!!

I've heard to many tails of woe wherein the target just got angry!!!

Well, I think a good 3 feet of selected hard wood, with a broader extremity and a metal point on the other extremity in your hand would beat a pistol whatsoever in a concealed location in most close range emergencies :)

I wouldn't now, but in my younger days at a time i had a 25. My true first gun was Taurus 25(at a latter time i also owned a Beretta 25) And i trusted my life with either so, yes.

Everybody loves to bad-rap the .25. Granted, there are more powerful options, but anyone who thinks the .25 is non-lethal is talking out of his hat. About ten years ago in Memphis, a law enforcment officer's kid who had some mental problems got ahold of his father's Beretta Mod. 21 in .25 acp. He killed two men and severely wounded another in three separate incidents, three separate days. As far as accuracy, I've owned a Raven, a Jetfire, and a Colt Junior, and all would hold within six inches at 15 yards, and they didn't jam, an advantage of FMJ rounds over lead bullets like the .22 LR.

A lot of the supposed "info" about calibers and effectiveness seen here is like urban legends: it gets repeated often enough and soon everybody believes it. The .25 auto was one of the most popular calibers of the last century. Even if you attribute much of this to the size and affordability of the weapons, it would not have remained so if the bullets just bounced off coats and bodies. I'll take a .25 over a knife or a stick any day.

...minus the news report quoted above.

I don't think anyone has said it can't kill. What we're saying is it often DOESN'T do the job. If Mr. Cohn had been shot in the head with a .357, 9mm, or .45 ACP he would have been dead. As it stands, he had "minor injuries" from being shot in the temple by a .25 ACP.

Strum...

from whjat it says in the that story it’s possible that a bullet went thu galss before hitting the guy. “the suspect fired into the vehicle, striking Cohn in the head”

also you don't know what kind of ammo was used, it's sure not all .25 rounds are the same ;)

and yes of course I'd feel safe with a .25acp, but I would rather take a .22LR

No. I was shot at with one of these at very close range, the guy didnt hit me once. I had one still have one, it is worthless for anything over 1 ft away or seems to be so.

I almost always fee safe whether I am carrying or not. I am one of those people that just feel the odds of something bad happening to me are very small. I am more afraid of being in an auto accident or falling in the tub than I am of being attacked or shot. This may not be the most prudent view of life but I think it is a pretty healthy state of mind.

I do not carry because I am afraid. I carry because I like to be prepared. I think it is a good idea to plan for a bad situation even if you do not think it will happen. All my vehicles are brand new and the chance of them not functioning is pretty slim but I still have AAA and carry a tool kit and jumper cables.

If all I had was a .25 I would feel safe, but I would not feel that I was being as reasonably prepared as I could.

Bill DeShives is spot on. The .25, in a quality gun like the Beretta is FAR more reliable than a.22. and when you look at ballistics, look at the .22 and .25, bith from a 2 inch barrel .25 hands down.

I carried a .25 Beretta as a BUG uniform. Many of my fellow officrs did as well.

I have practiced with my Beretta 950 enough to have confidence that I can make a head shot with the Hornady XTPs at 5 yards. and if the target is in excess of 5 yards, it probably isn't a threat anyway.

And the biggest single advantage is the .25 is a centerfire. Centerfires will always be more reliable than rimfires.

with this in mind, would you consider a cheap Taurus .25 to be a good BUG?

There are some pretty worthless .25 guns out there, my dad has a CHEAP Raven .25 made by Pheonix that he will never carry again as it kept jamming on him at the range (he bought it for $75 a few years ago)

Doug,

I've never owned a Taurus, so I can't comment on them. I know from prsonal experience that the Beretta 950, and the Colt Junior/Baby Browning are as close to 100 percent reliable as any auto ever made.

Personally, and this is just my opinion, I would MUCH rather have a high QUALITY .25 ACP in my pocket, than a piss poor .357 Magnum.

I own a Bauer 25. Have had it for years. Took it out one day and discovered it couldn't penetrate a 50 gal. steel drum. I think of this gun as one step above nail and fang, however, would prefer my .22 loaded with stingers...at least "someone" might notice the sounds of the gun shots and dial 911 so the paramedics could find your beaten and battered body!
