Who needs guns out in public? I know I don't.

I'm a 48 year old male human being and I wouldn't need a gun for SD if there weren't any guns in society. I have zero physical ailments, or associated pain, I also have 100% mobility. I know for a fact, that at least one running back in the NFL is my exact height and weight. I've been practicing martial arts since I was seven years old. I've had for example a SWAT Captain, a Special Forces Colonel and #1 Contender professional kickboxer, who I used to spar with by the way, all tell me that I didn't need a gun, I could take out most people with my bare hands.

I don't need guns, people need guns, to stop people like me, who don't obey the law. I could take out an elementary classroom with a 16 OZ hammer, I could probably kill a dozen people at the mall with a pipe wrench, or my bare hands even, I mean seriously who could stop me in time? Who? A person just as skilled as me? Two, or three people like me? Stun Guns? Laser beams? If I had a stick, or sword, or big knife fuggedaboutit, even the heavy weight champ, would most likely get a one way ticket to the big adios.

So who could stop me, short of installing a judo team in every place with kids, women and old people? A 110 pound 80 year old grandma with a Glock 19 thats who, or guy in a wheelchair with a 1911 maybe. If those two examples didn't have guns though, I could snap their necks like matchsticks.

Who needs guns it public? Who needs guns out in public? Certainly not I. The 240 pound 6'3" guy that can bench press a Buick and just got out of State Prison doesn't need one either. Do you?

I need one for when I meet mean people who want to kill me.

You don't sound mean or like you want to kill me...just well trained.

I am not in as good physical shape as Nate^, but I have been told I don't "need" a gun with me when I go to Walmart, the mall. etc. My general response is "I hope not".

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Not yet, but if I ever meet "the 240 pound 6'3" guy that can bench press a Buick and just got out of State Prison," and he's having a bad day, I might.

As long as you only meet bad guys who want to box or wrestle you will do just fine, maybe. This is assuming you don't meet a street fighter who knows more than you do is 10 years younger and a little bit faster and stronger.

What are you going to do in a theater or shopping mall or parking lot or at an office building and some 20 year old meth head listening to his voices decides to shoot the people around him and you are one of those people. Now you are an unarmed man and you are a target.

Let me guess. You are 30' away from him but you will terrify him with a KiiiYiiieee and a spinning back kick followed by 2 rapid fire left jabs to show this deranged nut job you mean business and he had better put his 3 revolvers and shotgun down or you will spank him from 30' away. Good luck with that.

I don't sit at home fearing for my life. What next..you're going to tell me I need to carry..incase I get trapped in a high-rise with hostages and a group of German terrorists?

Everyday I drive to work 80 miles on a freeway. I'm more worried about not coming home from that..then being attacked by the Karate Kid.

O.K. Thar's your opinion and I can respect that. But your experiences and expectations are not those of others, and you can't speak for them.

Come back when you turn 58 and let us know if you are still the tuff mama-jamma you were 10 years earlier.

If you have children you'd understand why you need a gun. If you are out with your young child or have a handicapped child, how do you expect to get in a fist fight and keep your kid out of harms way and/or keep them from running away? I know everyone on the Internet is a tough guy, but there's always going to be some one out there that can and will kick your @ss.

The OPs mentality seems to be running strong amongst gun owners lately that what to marginalized their gun ownership from others that don't own similar guns.

Frankly, it's disgusting that people exercise there 2nd amendment rights, but are more than willing to sell out everyone else.

For those who have never experienced it the brutal nature of ones family being attacked or losing a family member to an attack, for no reason other than to spill blood, life seems a fairly secure thing. For a few of us that have we know better.

It takes something like that to move one from a what if or maybe this may happen in some fantasy world to the reality that in less than the time it takes you to blink your eyes, you can be involved in a situation not of your making.
A situation that is brutal, unreasoning, final. That you in your wildest imagination could not come close to the reality of, and are totally unprepared for. Where the only outcomes are you or someone you love dies or the attacker/s do.
I dont sit in my house fearing for my life. Or anyplace else for that matter. Im 6 2 250lbs. Though age and illness have weakened me I can still mess up your day without a gun in a short encounter.
But since 2005 I am never unarmed day night home or out. I have prepared myself and armed myself to the best of my ability to make sure the next gremlin that means harm to me or mine will have the worst end of the two outcomes.
I need a gun. A lot that dont think they do need one too. I pray they never get educated as a few of us have.

No I carry a gun now, I feel like I could need it I like guns its my life long main hobby/sport/martial art. I said if there were no guns I'd be okay. First I don't look like a target and second I can run and/or fight. I was trying to make the point that no guns wouldn't make us safer and right now with guns, people are in fact much safer, than vice versa, because size, weight or infirmity inequalities are greatly decreased with firearms.

Reread my Op and quit thinking my post say something it does not. I don't think I've hardly ever talked about hand to hand combat, or that much about my physical condition o TFL before, I didn't do it to brag, or be a tough guy. I just used myself as an example of someone who could hurt people without firearms and would probably be able to defend himself if society had no guns.

I could take out an elementary classroom with a 16 OZ hammer, I could probably kill a dozen people at the mall with a pipe wrench, or my bare hands even, I mean seriously who could stop me in time? Who?

Seems like there was a story a long time ago about a guy like you named Goliath and a kid named David.

That wasn't to you Ghost1958, it was sort of in general to anyone who didn't get it. Also I didn't want some UFC guy, challenging me to sparring matches, I'm allergic to pain. I know there are guys who can mess me up, thats why I like my .45. I was just trying to make the point that not a lot of big nasty tough guys hang out at the elementary school.

In Nates defense I think some of you are reading his post and misinterpreting his point. Unless I am wrong I took his post to point out that young huge strong skilled fighters would be able to hold their own in an unarmed society. Or be much more able to victimize others since the average person isnt of a similar build strength size skill IF there were no guns for the rest of us to level the playing field against them.
Granny with a gun trumps Big Bad Jhon everytime;)

At least some of us got Nate's point. I might point out that one does not necessarily have to be a big tough guy to reek a lot of havoc on a crowd of unsuspecting, innocent, or defenseless people. There are many ways.

I'm sure lots of the police, soldiers and many others could give me a tough fight, I know I live on Earth. It should go without saying, but I bet I could take a Katana, or a ball bat in a class room of kindergardeners and not get much opposition, or build a fertilizer bomb, or drive over a playground with a car, or a myriad of other horrible things. So can millions and millions of other people in the world.

Tough Guy

I'm 46.
I'm 5'9.
I weigh, well more than I want.
But I run half marathons. 3 this year plus the "muddy buddy".
I use some dumbells, but I need to go to the gym more and, of course, up the intensity. I quit drinking and smoking too. Years ago. And I watch what I eat.
When I was younger, I played with some boxing, some Tae kwon do, some Tai chi, and some Kenpo...
I am not afraid to walk around at night by myself, I think if one or two un armed dumbasses were to try and slap me around, I could avoid serious injury.
Am I a tough guy?
I've had trees dropped on my head, I've had pipes dropped on my head, I even...ahem...hit myself in the head with a sledge hammer. Yep. That one hurt. Must have been hilarious for anyone watching. Almost knocked myself out. I've stitched myself up Rambo style due to my own stupidity.
But the idea of taking on someone like Nate45 with a demented view on life scares me to death.
Fortunatly, our founding fathers and my old buddy Sam Colt, god rest his soul, say I don't have to go it alone. And I'm not a even an invalid or decrepid. I'm semi inshape and semi trained.

I need to be armed in public because the cowards travel in packs.
