Which one???

ammo

Quick question, can I use the 7.62 x 51mm NATO ammo in my .308 or should I just stick to the 308 ammo? Will there be any safety of myself or my rifle jeopardized? The reason I ask is because I am able to find the NATO ammo but having a little trouble finding the 308...

I asked Remington and they said that it wasn't recommended because NATO ammo (some) use steel casing instead of brass which should only be used with chrome lined barrels because of possible damage to the chamber and extractor. Aldo, they said there was a discrepancy with the pressure differences. Is any of this a common or realistic problem or are hey being over cautious because it might have happened once?

It's a CYA (Cover Your A**), or in this case, Remington's A thing. They don't want the liability if you get some foreign mfg ammo and possibly have an issue.

For warranty purposes, if they don't recommend it, then it may be best to steer clear.

I think I'm just going to stick with what they recommend. I'm really considering going with the Talley rings/base comber and the Super Sniper 12x scope. Next issue would be finding someplace to shoot farther than 100 yds that isn't too far away!

That's the problem I have here in TX. Closest public range that has lanes out to 1,000yds is about 1.5-2 hrs away depending on traffic.

We were recently able to set up a 500 yd target on the land where I hunt. With a little more work (maybe a lot) clearing some trees, brush, undergrowth, we should be able to have targets at 100, 200, 300, and 400 as well. This place is a little over an hour away but I can stay the whole weekend to make the drive worth it instead of having to drive there and back same day.

I'm not even sure if there are any places in Florida that have either a range or enough land to shoot past 600 yards , at least without trespassing or being by a neighborhood. I think there is one range locally that has a 600 yard range but there are some stipulations to shoot there. I wouldn't mind driving an hour or two to go shoot long range. If anyone knows of any place in Florida then let me know!

an hour away from you.

port malabar rifle and pistol club in palm bay has a 600 yard range.

I have not shot there, but have shot with shooters that have.

if you can find a club that has highpower matches or a 3x300 prone match
that would be good place to start, mid range is 300-600 yards

the local club here has a match that I do once a month, I'm a member of another range, but the matches are open.
I use it to practice, learn and test the loads I have worked up for the rifle.

Bipod

So as mentioned I am on a budget and I was wondering what would be a good bipod for my Rem 783 (308)? I know a lot people like the Harris bipods but I was wondering how the Blackhawk bipods (approx. $50) found at Walmart are? Keep in mind too it would just be used for recreational long range target shooting.

Savage 10psr's can be found online for around $500. Mines a tack driver just like every other Savage rifle I've ever owned.

The T/C Venture is definitely the best rifle among the ones you listed. Sorry - too late I realize now - but it's the truth.

Super Sniper has GOT to be better than that Redfield - don't know for *sure*, but the SSs are mighty good.

But thank goodness you got a 783, not a 710/715/770/Whitetail hunter - ugh!

I was strongly considering the TC but at the time of purchase I couldn't find any at the gun show. One of the reasons I went with the 783 over the Ruger was because Remington advertised 5 shots with .725" grouping at 100 yds. Also the stock on the Rem felt sturdier. One more reason is I got it for $370 (about) which was cheaper than Walmart which was about $400-$425.

I'm late on the input, maybe, but here's my two bits. I got an X7 in 7-08. It'll do 1000k and I also wanted it for hunting and took a nice deer with it last fall at 400+. If you want a purely target shooter the X7VH is a very good choice, and the 308 if fine (wish they make it in a 7-08, however).

The SS 10x scope mentioned is a good one. Also look for the Elite in 10x as it's got a good reputation for what you want. The Elite can be found new for around $200.

I put a 4.5-14 Legend HD (with mil-dot) on my X7 and the two have been a great set up, IMO.

One more thing the 783 is basically an X7 with and uglier stock and a detachable mag. Yes the receiver is different...but they're about the same. My two bits.

I appreciate the input! Nemsis do you know anything about the Blackhawk bipods?(just curious) Also, what is the difference between the bipods you provided and actual Harris bipods? What makes a good bipod? What should I look for in a bipod? I was thinking of getting a Marlin but I heard they some problems but I cannot remember what they were and I think the reason why I didn't go with one is because it was out of my price range at the time although at this point I can't remember the actual reason for sure. I might try one and see how it is one day. I like having things that are more unique or simply not what everyone else uses. Would this fit my 783? Would this bipod be a good investment for the shooting I will be doing? (recreational long range target) I don't want to get it if it isn't going to last or work for my application. I rather pay a little more and buy once.

The Blackhawk looks like a Harris clone as well but I never handled one so I can't tell you if it's any good. But I can tell you the Caldwell ones are junk.

When buying a bipod like anything else is determined by what you will use it for but for any applicaton it must be strong and sturdy and has to have the side to side swivel abillity so you can level the reticle.

A bipod might not be ideal for you if your shooting off a bench all the time, especially if your stock flexes easily the load from the bipod will make your stock touch your barrel.

I suggest a front rest instead of a bipod then

I shoot prone off the bipod and rear bag and for that I suggest a Harris BRMS and a pod lock.
