Which handgun does your wife, fiancée or girlfriend use for a house gun?

I have no wife, fiancee, or girlfriend -- nor am likely to ever have, since I'm straight.

My own choice for an at-home gun is the same as my carry weapon. That's a Glock 26 or a Glock 19, depending on what I'm wearing that day. But I have large hands for my size, which makes the Glocks a good choice for me.

Always get nervous when I hear guys talk about "training" their wives. Sounds kind of hinky to me! ;)

If you have even 10 seconds to go get a gun and prepare you should ALWAYS grab a rifle or shotgun
You must be very fortunate to live in a large house. Moving about in any way with a rifle or a shotgun in mine is rather ungainly and quite slow, and if something needs to be shot does come in I highly doubt there will a ten second warning

My wife goes for the shotgun: a 12ga Mossberg pump when she feels threatened.

Once she chased away what turned out to be a noisy racoon with my Ruger MKII target model. She must have looked something feirce with that tench inch bull barrel in front of her. She doesn't like how thick the Glock grip is though. The shotgun fits better into her hands and would be more intimidating to a would be intruder.

Me, i'm a Glock 19 guy.

Look how cute we are together:

?????... I am a CCW instructor and generally dont like to make blanket statements since so many situations can vary...
I agree real world training is a must as well as a certain level of knowledge and familiarity with any guns in question that are accessible . In my own situation, my family would be considered "gun people". Being rural and hunters, it is who we are and the way we have been raised up from kids. Guns are a tool and as natural as a hammer or knife. I happen to take that interest into the tactical field as well as hunting with professional training and sponsored IPSC competition.
My wife is the same, I have seen her dust a black bear in the middle of the night with 9shot from my 12 gauge pump when the dogs were in danger. She "Knows" more than most in my intermediate classes and knows how to pick the right tool for the job. I wouldn't test her with a house breech with live ammo. ;)

Knowing and actually KNOWING, under stress, in the dark, in the rain, when first waking without warning to a threat knowing becomes not KNOWING doesn't it?

I agree! The concept isn't a man training his girl, but a trainer training a person who needs training regardless of gender!:D

My wife is very recoil shy and a prefers the simplest firearm to operate. Even though she has shot and can operate all of my guns, I had a beater project S&W M10 PPC revolver built into a house gun just for her. It addresses her needs/issues specifically. It is DAO, the trigger pull is about 6lbs, with the full underlug barrel and Bomar sight rail recoil is negligible even with hotter .38spl loads. It is a gun that she is comfortable with and enjoys shooting, that translates into a gun that she is confident with for home defense.

My fiance has a Smith & Wesson 38 revolver. I have a Citadel 1911. She just bought me a Kimber Custom II 1911 (as a wedding gift) and likes it a lot so she's not unwilling to try something different.

I can understand people saying the handgun is to get you to the rifle but in my case I have arthritis in my shoulders so bad I am unable to shoot rifles. So I practice, Practice and PRACTICE with my 1911. I can usually shoot about 200 rounds before the shoulders just fall apart. She on the other hand can shoot anything she can lift and shoot it all day long. She's a strong woman so that doesn't leave out much.

I would like to get her a Desert Eagle .50 CAL for a wedding gift. The wheel gun would still be her carry but the Desert Eagle would be her go to 'house gun' :-)

S&W model 65 with .38 spl ammo. Heavy, durable and sturdy revolver and comes with the heavy bull barrell. No felt recoil at all !!!
When loaded with .38 ammo feels like a .22.
But.......don't get close to the .357 magnum

My wife's home gun is the gun I carried as a private security supervisor and Pirvate Investigator a 2 1/2" barrel S&W 66-2. This gun served me well for several years before I met her and I am glad she chose it to protect her. Besides it gave me a reason to look for another short barrel revolver. What did I find? A 3" S&W 65-3.

There is a diverse selection of choices in the guns mentioned so far. One of the new coming guns ... the Walther CCP ... looks like on paper so far, that it has potential for those who are recoil sensitive, but want the power of a full bore 9mm. We may be getting one here after they come to market ... none available yet in these parts.

The more comfortable your partner is shooting the more they will shoot, therefore the higher their skills sets will grow. A house gun will only be used under the most stressful moment in some folks life. The skill sets to survive will have to be highly tuned to be natural and quick, and that comfort in training will eliminate ... hopefully ... the additional stress of worrying about the gun they are using hurting them. A solid hit with a .38 is better than a miss with a 500 S&W!!!:D

My wife is grown up. I don't tell her what hand gun to use. She's smart enough to pick the one she can shoot, and conceal.

What handgun to be specific do you suggest your better half use for home defensive duty?

The original question, no sexist intent.

It could go either way what the wife who is an experienced shooter, cop, military, competitive shooter may make suggestions to her husband who is not a shooter, it goes both ways, in my shortcomings I could have been clearer. Just looking at the current trend of house gun use, and in couple situations where the house is shared, the decision can vary by couples I am sure.

Again I ask, what gun do you recommend to your partner as a house gun?

Stevie-Ray, very sorry sir. :(

I started off trying the traditional route of small revolvers for my wife, went through many guns and much money before I wised up and let HER pick the gun.

Her current favorite, CZ 2075 RAMI BD 9mm, called the Black Diamond.

If I am there, my girlfriend will run the phone while I run the GP100.

If I am not around, she has no problem with using the GP. although she's says, if possible, she will get her 20ga Rem. 870 from the safe.

My wife knows exactly where I keep the S&W Model 10 hidden. And she's shot it well in the few times I've been able to get her to the range.

My wife knows how to work every firearm I have. Her favorites are probably her little Glock 26 or the Walther p99. We practice with them on occasion and we have even partaken of a couple of NRA courses for some "tactical together time".:D

In my particular situation,(and I suspect many other men as well) my wife listens to other people better than she listens to me. Formal training from a reputable firearms instructor was my work around for this.
