Initially, I would have gone with the Python -- beautiful revolver, very collectable.
However, since you added "if you didn't have any guns", I switched over to the Commander -- since semi-auto is my favorite venue.
 
I already have two Pythons, a 4" and a 6". I also have a full size Series 70 MK IV Gov't Model in 45 and am missing a Commander. I chose the Commander for these reasons. Both the Python and Commander are great examples of Colt's products.
 
Commander. I've never been infatuated with Colt revolvers, but their 1911s on the other hand. I just bought a Springfield TRP but I still must own a Colt.
 
I've got a Wilson Combat Stealth Lightweight for my .45 1911 series pistol and currently have 2-Pythons. Both 6" barrels. 1 is NIB and blued and the other is a polished stainless steel that is my shooter. You just can't go wrong if you do your shopping on a like new Python
