Commander, surely. One shouldn't be without a revolver, but I already own a few. Most important is that the Commander fits my hand MUCH better than a Python, and is much easier for me to fire accurately. It is also quite a bit lighter, and far more comfortable to carry.

The Python IS a bit more versatile, but I see handguns primarily as defensive tools to be carried. For me, the Commander fills this role much better.

P. S. I forgot about the "if you didn't have any handguns." No problem. A Commander is probably enough cheaper than a Python to leave you plenty of change for a good used airweight J-frame S&W, preferably square butt, or a Cobra or Agent. The latter two are expensive in new condition, but not at all expensive with worn finish, which plenty of them have.

Python - all the way

It has always been a dream to have a .357 magnum revolver. So I choose the Python. Despite the fact, that I own ZERO wheelguns at the moment.

I must confess I have a deep hatred for the .45, now if you had given me a choice between a .40 and a python as my only gun. It would be the .40

I'd go pythom for a first gun, simple, reliable.

I have a lightweight commander and a Trooper MK III, Trooper is really nice to shoot, not carry.

Has to be the Commander.

I would have a Python for my collection, but not as a fighting weapon. The lockwork is somewhat fragile for long service and the double-action function is horrible.

Now if the choice was between Commander and a pinned and recessed Combat Magnum (M19) or .357 Magnum (M27) Smith & Wesson; I'd have to think longer. Happily, I have a .45 ACP Commander and a 5" M27 Smith. I really need a M19.

No question it would be a Python. Own 2 Pythons and 1 Commander and the Pythons are more versatile and just plain more fun!

The Python is great - this is my 1957 version.

However, for practical use, this is my first choice.!

The Commander would be a close second.

:D :D

I am facing a similar dilemma. Since I have only one chance of getting back a Colt Revolver I sold a few years back, I say get the Python. You can always get the 1911 later. :D

Which one?

I have both and I have to admit my carry/car gun is a stainless xse Combat Commander which is both accurate and dependable. I don't holster my Pythons so they're relegated to range fun and general admiring. But if I had to choose-and fortunately I don't-I'd choke and sob but vote for the Python. -Asa

Python!

Howdy,

Nothing beats Colt's graceful Python for fun at the range. I've owned three and regret selling them :( They're smoooth, accurate and have such an intimidating look. I'll be starting a new business soon and if all goes well, I might put a Python on my "gun radar" for Christmas.
I'm a wheelgunner at heart. Pythons are like Italian sports cars: high perfromance, but tempramental, i.e., they need some maintanance now and then-and it won't be cheap.
My suggestion for converting an anti-gunner into a pro-gunner is take them to the range, load up a Python with the lightest .38 load available, teach them the safety fundamentals and watch them have a BALL blowing the center out of a target! It's sort of like driving a Cadillac. I love Pythons :)
