Which assault rifle?

Lots of good choices. I have a few each of a few styles AK47, AR15/M4, M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, PTR91. And I used to have an M1A.

For plinking at 100 yds you probably do not want the full size cartridges like the Garand in .30-06 or PTR91 in .308. Fine rifles but hard kicking, much more expensive ammo and less easily accessorized (M1A is easier much more expensive than others). I love them but may not be best for your use.

The AK47 is a very simple rifle, but it is not as easy to accessorize and the ergonomics are kind of a compromise. You can put a dress and jewelry on it, but there is still a hairy old Ivan underneath. Don't get an AK for accessory fun. Get it for rugged simplicity. The AK74 is said to be more accurate than the AK47, will have less recoil since it shoot a cartridge similar in ballistics to the .223, and at times the bulk 5.45x39 ammo is slightly cheaper than the older 7.62x39.

Personally I think the AR15 is the best use of the $1,200. Great ergonomics and designed to be modular. If you want something a little more unique get the 6.8 SPC II chambering. It is a FUN rifle to shoot. You can keep it simple and easily shoot with iron sights to 100 yds. We like to shoot clay pigeons set into the hillside at 50 - 100 yds. Or you can add a red dot sight for easier aiming, and get a more customized buttstock and pistol grip. I have some M4 style rifles and am now building one as an A4: 20" barrel, flat top, carry handle iron sight, fixed A2 buttstock to use for CMP target matches. Endless possibilities for upgrades and accessories. Or instead of wimpy, girlie chamberings like .223, 5.56 or 6.8 SPC, you can get an AR in a manly chambering like .458 SOCOM or .50 Beowulf. Expensive ammo but man I bet they are fun within 100 yrds!

Actually, they are basically the same, that being, head down and forward, nose to the charging handle on the AR's, or at, or alongside the top cover on the AK's.

Wow, rifle use 101. Ok then, try putting an optic that's set up for a standard AR height, on an AK and then let us know if that's "basically" the same. Or vice versa, whichever.

I suppose that as long as your head is somewhere behind the muzzle, then it's "basically" the same.

To the OP, again, try before you buy. Don't let us internet retards tell you what's best for you.

You never specified an optic. But since you brought it up...

When you mount a red dot on an AK with a proper mount, you get the same thing as you do with an AR with a similar mount. Both allow cowitnessing the dot to the iron sights, and you get the same natural shouldering and cheek weld as you do with the iron sights. The guns handle and shoot very much the same, and also have very similar results with the hits on target.

You can mismatch a lot of things and have a bad result if you want, but the fact is, they really are not all that different if you use the appropriate stuff. Putting the wrong mount, optic, whatever, on anything, proves nothing, other than maybe your ignorance in what youre doing. Then again, we all learn some lessons the hard way, and some take longer than others to figure it out, or they dont at all. Then of course, its always the guns fault when they cant. No way it could possibly be them.

Most of the complaints I hear about AK's, are from people who have little practical hands on experience with them to know. With a little realistic hands on familiarization and practice, all the so called problems tend to go away, as the user becomes accustomed to the gun. Another problem is, AR shooters seem to want to turn the AK into an AR, and run it like one, which usually doesnt work to well.

While it can't be accessorized much, I like the Vz.58 very much. It's a little better built than your average AK and the design is better IMO.

If you want to shoot something more powerful than a .223, like the 7.62x39, 6.8SPC or 300BLK, you need to consider ammo cost as well. Polymer coated Brown Bear ammo is very cheap to buy. I don't think 6.8SPC will ever be cheap, and it's too soon to tell about 300 Blackout.

That being said, at the risk of being flamed, if I had money to burn I would buy a Piston driven AR-15 from PWS in your favorite caliber. Otherwise, I like the Vz.58. But that's me. I hate cleaning guns, and don't shoot some of my collection just because of that. A piston driven AR and the Vz.58 are fairly easy to clean.

here you go. msar stg-556. go nuts. this is essentially an sbr with the accuracy of a full length barrel and no paperwork or tax stamp.

nothing is more comfortable, easy to manipulate, or easy to keep on target for multiple follow-up shots, even while on the move. add in a 42rnd mag as i have shown in the bottom picture, and you are ready to raise hell.

...all things considered, the rugged, highly accurate M14 7.62
battle rifle in carbine form is, in my opinion, the all around best choice.
The 18.0" Bush, Scout and MK14s may be even better especially in bullpup form. This one is a work in progress :)

She's scoped and ready to run... 7.62 x 51 Crazy Horse Mk14 Mod 0 type SEI in a Rogue M14 bullpup chassis stock.
Essentially an SBR with the accuracy of a medium heavy 18.0" barrel. No paperwork or tax stamp unless you opt for a sound suppressor as I have chosen to do.

I'm about to modify the receiver cover to accept a 50 round drum :)

@SR420,

Maybe its me, but that reminds me of a Sedan with one of those body kits put on it. The "tacticool'ing" of cars.

My cousin has a SOCOM 16. He loves it. I've shot it, and I like it a lot myself. Not sure on the price though; he got his a while back. Still, it is an awesome all around little rifle. It might be worth a look.

P.S. There's also a SOCOM II. I personally don't like all the rails it has on it- looks like a "Luke Skywalker" weapon to me- but opinions (and needs) vary. That might be worth a look too.
