Which 7 Rifle calibers would you choose

Markco, you're grouping the 243 with the 264mag, the 30 carbine with the 30/378wby...and you're calling threads on the 6 pistol battery SILLY?

I do think they are all silly, yes, but still interesting in some respects. The groupings are purely based on bullet diameter, nothing else. Not a dream, not a perfect battery, just something that was interesting to me. A few people have listed the 7 out of the 7 groups. The thing that is most interesting to me about these types of threads is the huge number of responses that don't even answer the OP. Maybe that is another question for a different sub-forum though.

these are mine...
20 vartarg
22 long range /long/short
222 remington
223 remington
22-250 remington ackley improved
243 winchester
25-06 remington
6.5 creedmoor
270 winchester
7mm-08 reminton
7mm mauser
30-30 winchester
32 winchester special
308
30-06
45-70 govenrment
38 special
44 remington mag

these are what i "need"...
257 roberts ai
30-30 ai
30-40
338 federal
357 rem maxium
43 mauser
444 marlin
50-90 sharps

why is there always more!!!:D

I'm a simple man and have narrowed down my collection to just a few.

.22LR
5.56
.300 B.O. (my current favorite)
.308

The Core 4:
22LR
223
30-06
458 Win Mag

With those 4 I'd feel comfortable hunting anything. But since you asked for 7:

32-20
260 Rem
338 Win Mag

This would result in the following battery:

22LR small game
32-20 larger small game
223 varmints
260 Rem light carbine for light big game
30-06 full size rifle for big game
338 Win Mag full size rifle for BIG game
458 Win Mag full size rifle for dangerous game

Not much you can't hunt with that group.

223 rem
6.5 creedmoor
308
338 lapua
375 RUM
416 Barret
50 BMG

If I'm choosing one from each group. It'd look a bit different I were to simply choose any 7 rounds.

Marauder, zing!! :D

Well ok, I'll play (assuming centerfire only):

Less than 5mm (added a category)
.17 Hornet

5-5.99mm
.223 Rem (Hon. Mention .218 Bee)

6-6.99mm
.260 Remington (Hon. Mention .243 Win)

7-7.99mm
.280 Remington (Hon. Mention .30-'06)

8-8.99mm
.338-06 A-Square

9-9.99mm
.375 HH Mag (Hon. Mention 9.3x62mm - don't see on your list)

10-10.99
.416 Rigby (Hon. Mention .404 Jeffrey)

11-13mm
.45-70 Government (Hon. Mention .458 Lott - don't see on your list)

Guess I'm fairly boring / mainstream

.223rem check got it, cheap ammo, does the job at game at distances I am comfortable shooting them at

6.5x55 Swede well I am a Swede so:D, don't own the calibre but have hunted and competed with it extensivly, it really is a great calibre

.308 Winchester check, versatile and cheap, does everything for me really and is enough cartridge for all hunting in sweden.

.357 Magnum next inline for purchase, both in carbine and revolver.

.358 Winchester been eying a blr in the calibre, i do own a 9,3x62 now and love it for driven game and tracking wounded animals mostly hogs, when you need a wolloping that the 308 doesn't provide

if i win the lotto then 416 rigby for the africa hunting i will be doing:D

. I was thinking through the various calibers I own, and what is available, kind of in a way to see if I have any significant holes.

So, one from each group based purely on bullet diameter, which calibers would you choose.

Confusing as to what you are looking for. Your "caliber" (bore diameter) groups are listed in millimeters. Yet you have several cartridges listed in the groups. Some of your groups are way too wide spread, and inclusive.
In a more realistic listing of cartridges I would say.

5.56 NATO/223 Remington
243
7MM Remington Magnum
30-06 Springfield
338 Winchester Magnum
375 H&H Magnum
458 Lott

Now if your question really is "based purely on bullet diameter", then it would be.

.223
.243
.284
.30
.33
.375
.458

There is some overlap of mission among my calibers, but I don't care as these feed the guns I love:

.22 LR (......)
.223 Rem (evil black rifle)
.270 Weatherby (yeah, expensive and rare, etc, but what a screamer and what range!)
7.62X39 (evil cheap fun communist rifle)
.308 (evil black rifle)
7.55 x 55 Swiss (classic straight bolt K31 of course)
8mm Mauser (all-time classic)
.375 H&H (can take anything I'd ever have interest in)

I realize that's 8.....oh well. I'm not the only cheater. :D

5.56 Nato
.243 Winchester
.270 Winchester
7.62X39 Russian
.35 Remington
40 S&W

Sorry only 6 interest me.

Jim

Thanks for the reply, MarkCO.

Following your rules, I would choose...

22-250 - varment cartridge that easily handles big wolves for me.

6.5 Swede - shot so much game with it.

30-30 win - fully loaded, don't need extra ammo, so nice to carry!

340 wby - this is a "none of the above" group for me. wag

358 win - in a Savage 99 "the perfect lever action".

44 mag - shot many elk, moose, bear etc.

458 win mag - in case someone gets me to track a wounded grizzly in solid alders!

btw 44wcf aka 44-40

Rifle:
22LR
.223/5.56
.22/250
.260 Rem
6.8 SPC
30/06
.375 H&H

Some overlap but chose 7. You didn't ask but pistol: .22LR, 9mm, .40 S&W, .45ACP, .44mag
These would do anything needed doing. The rest are esoteric icing on the cake.

Some of my choices aren't on your list, but here goes:
22PCP air rifle - plinking and small game/pest -pellets, unlike .22lr, are cheap and available

.223 - just cause when it all goes south, you need something that has parts and ammo availability everywhere

7mm RM - While I have a 7-08, and had a 6.5x55, the 7mm RM will do all they can at an easily extended 100+ yards in distance

For grins and giggles, I'd add a 6mmBR rifle based on the XP-100 - perfect for coyotes and similar, even pronghorn. On the larger end, I'd add a 45-70 BPCR like the Browning with the inserts and level, strictly for ringing gongs downrange

I don't need or want any of the big bear/elephant stuff
