Which .22 handgun would you buy of these two?

That is a tough choice-I'd go with the colt but only because it is .22lr. If they were both .22lr I'd pick the revolver. It is a matter of cost of ammo and noise. I haven't shot a .22 magnum pistol but I have heard they are much louder. I would also throw out there that sometimes credit card debt can be worth it.

The Smith & Wesson model 18 IS a .22LR gun. Both guns in my original post is in .22 Long Rifle.

I have a Woodsman, Huntsman and a model 18 and a few other S&W revolvers. I would borrow money to get both.

My S&W has been more versitile , shorts, snake shot, and no cold weather jams in the snow. So from a practicle standpoint, the model 18 is better. Nostalgic, the Woodsman is better.

Go for the Colt!

I'm normally a S&W revolver guy (that's why I have a few), but I sure wish I had a Colt Woodsman. The closest I have to that is my Beretta Cheetah. Very nice handgun, but it's not a Colt.

I'd go with the Smith simply because I don't shoot a Woodsman well. I also don't shoot the High Standard Sport King I have very well, but can drive tacks with the Buckmark. Just personal preferance.

So i have been a long time lurker.
I had to make a account to toss in my opinion.
The Woodsmen

I have a 3rd gen Targetsmen. I inherited it from my father years ago and it shoots where you point it. Everyone that shoots it loves it. Now unfortunally it was stored for years in its original holster and has wear from it and i only have one mag.
Bringing it into my fav gunshop to show it off the owner offered me 900 for it. on the spot but really i like it and when i have kids it will be the first 22 handgun they shoot.

Each time i have stopped in at Cabela's or Sheils up in Reno there is usually a woodsmen on sale in their collecters room over $1100

With that many mags and extra grips i would defently not take a second look at it and grab it before somone else does

For the sake of humanity................buy the Colt.

You sir have found the deal of the week!

Good luck on your decision and happy plinking :) :) :)

i have a smith model 18k that ive had since i was 12 years old....had the trigger worked and in s/a it has less than 1lb....lol, i LOVE it, def go with the smith

An obvious question no one has asked yet.

What are you going to use it for?

That may make a difference in the recommendations you get.:D

For .22 LR, the revolver makes more sense. The automatic pistol has only two real advantages over the revolver: capacity and the fact that it can be reloaded quickly if you have pre-loaded magazines on you. But if you're loading the gun from a box of cartridges, the revolver it easier to use. Loading magazines is slow and not pleasant and makes no sense for plinking or target shooting.
