Wheelguns Are For "Oldtimers"??

Im 36 and feel older most of the time :D Ive had wheels on and off my whole life. S&W Highway patrolman at 16..gun great gun.
Shot many smiths my whole life...got my first SP101 in college..and sold it for tuition...in retrospect I should have kept the gun :D Ive had a LS60 J frame, a 650 cia and my trusty worked over SP101..Ill never give it up after thinking about selling it..Big mistake...its just to damn perfect. I also have had a miriad of s/autos over the years.....Taurus, S&W, CZ, Beretta...etc all have been world class guns...both are great but the snubs hold a place in my heart that only a great snub can fill.
Ill take my SP, K40 and PCR for now...all are world class.
Shoot well

I've got to be honest.

I started with a revolver as a kid - an H&R 999 Sportsman. Used to shoot ground squirls from the tractor. That gun is gone now - stolen from my parents house when I was away in S E Asia.

I've owned many hand guns since, both pistols and revolvers. Still have many of both, but mostly carry and shoot revolvers. I figure if I ever get attacked by an army, I'll have time to get to my rifle. Otherwise, a revolver does just fine. Besides, I'm maybe getting just old enough that I don't like crawling around to pick up all that semi-auto ejected brass.;)

I'm 37 and my favourite wheelgun is my S&W 629 Classic DX with 8 3/8" barrel and a nice action job (SA trigger pull is a crisp 3 pounds; DA 8 pounds).

Maybe I am an old-timer to some of the young whipper-snappers on this board (I am a young 53) but the first handgun I shot was a S&W Model 15 in the AF and I have never lost my appreciation for a good revolver. Here are just a few from my collection.

For old timers? By cracky, ya got that right ya young whippersnapper. Cheap thrills and sparkly novelties are for those that still got ants in their pants.

Likewise Nordic skiing vs downhill (kids just hate to work) and road biking vs mountain. In both cases aesthetic enjoyment of the world vs cheap thrills.

I am probably a bit of a cop out for an old timer as I hardly ever shoot SA. DA almost exclusively--much more fun and challenge. My latest is the cheapest, an M66, and it is more fun than I could have imagined. Giving the heavier iron a rest.

Actually, I first decided that I would someday have a revolver when I was about 19. At the same time I also decided I would have a Ruger MKII some day.

Got them both at age 52, but at age 57 am hanging on the the Ruger only because it is one of those icons of the sport and currently fussing about whether to trade it in on a .22 cal revolver. Nice firearm, but is one of those boring autos.

This is an old thread. . .

posted by me on 3-01-2002:
I'm not that old (29 this month). I just recently started down the path of gun ownership about 2.5 years ago. My first purchase was a GP-100 4" (currently straped to my hip). My normal carry gun is a Tracker .41 magnum. 3/4 of all my handguns are revolvers (and I'm thinking of retiring my semiauto .22 for a revolver).
UPDATE
I did get rid of that .22 semi. I got a few more revolvers. I'm hooked on these things. Can't wait until my SA Blackhawk gets back from the gunsmith (Gary Reeder). :D

I'm 43. Bought my first (and only) revolver when I was about 25. It's a S&W 686 with 6 inch tube. My other handgun is a Ruger Mk II that I bought when I was about 22. Love them both! Both are a hoot to shoot! Ben eyeing the S&W 629 classic, though. I'll need to work on my wife a little longer ;)

I am 36 and consider myself an old timer.
My first gun was a six inch Model 29, and to this day a .44 model 29 or 629 is my favorite gun.
It was my first carrying gun too. Over the years I have tried everything, the Smith .45 auto, the 645, the Browning High Power, the Govt. .45 auto from full size to compact, the Beretta 9mm, the Glock 17 all have been tried and carried and enjoyed, but I always went back to the revolver.
My favorite revolvers are still the big N frame smiths....
They are a bit bulky to carry to carry, I have to admit. My three favorite carry guns are a Colt Magnum carry that I no longer carry because it left the realm of "took" and became a "collectible" just as it was catching on, a three inch Model 65 that is very well balanced and easy to tote, and my standard day in day out carry gun, a .357 stainless chief....
There are lots of reasons I prefer them. Revolvers are generally safer and easier to use, fire and clean, tend to shoot straighter thanks to the flat trajectory of magnum cartridges, are more reliable to boot and mostly more powerful unless you tote a desert eagle.
To operate a revolver rotates, locks up and fires.
To operate a semi-auto has to fire, unlock, extract, eject and reload. Far more complex, far more things to go wrong. Magazine feed lips are very thin and fragile compared to that big beefy cylinder.

FWIW I'm 31. My last purchase was one of those two in one day for the multi gun discount.

I don't know how much more oppisite I could have gotten. I bought a H&K P7M8 and a nice S&W Mod 28. My first N frame.

I think my collection is pretty balanced between wheel guns and autos.

Yes ... I'm an "Oldtimer" ... and getting older each day. Have loved revolvers since teenage years though ... so don't think age has much to do with it.

629

Andy Chadwick:
Go for that 629!!
I have been a handgun enthusiast for 30+ years. I own them all... Pistols and revolvers. My favorite is the 629 Classic DX 44 magnum roundbutt. I handload on a Dillon Press 240 grain Carroll lead bullet sitting on top of 22.8 grains of Winchester 296 powder. It is a blast!!!!!

Well, I'm 61 and have to admit I didn't start shooting handguns until 10 years ago.

While I own a few semi-autos, also had to pick up the following wheelies.

S&W 686 - 8 3/8" bbl with four way adjustable front sight

S&W 629 - 8 3/8" (my favorite plinker)

Ruger Blackhawk Bisley's in .22, .357, .44 mag and .45 LC

Ruger Old Army blackpowder in .45 cal.

spent 20 years before handguns shooting nothing but varmint rifles and love 'em all, but wheelguns are definitely special.

Safe shooting.

42 - and have more autos than revos, mainly because of the six 1911's I own. That said, there's 3 Smiths in the safe, and a couple Ruger revos on the way, too:)

old? who me?

I am 43 years old and can say revolvers outnumber auto's in my collection 3 to 1 (at least). As to my favorite well its just too close to call but I do have a serious fondness for short barreled n-frame smiths and j frames of any type. I really like the older smiths too. If its more than 50 years old its got my attention! (This is the main reason I am getting a C&R, they can then send em direct to my door!!!) Then I do love the older Colt actions (pre pythons but the same action). Of course life would not be the same without my custom (and factory) SAA style revolvers. OK I do love All revolvers.
heres just a few of my revolver collection:

IM 40 years old and I have had wheel guns since I started shooting, even when I was a little child I had fake wheelguns;) I like to carry them cross draw and still do LOL. My best wheel gun is my 44 Mag SuperRedHawk 71/2 stainless, I also have a nice scope for it, it works good for those longer shots using a shooting stick. Aim small hit small. RAMbo

Smith revos (any flavor) rule. i've had several Colts (Python/Dick Special/Agent), but always returned to the S&W fold.

My first S&W was a brand new 44 Magnum nickel 6 1/2" in presentation case. Have had three other 44 Magnums, a 41 Magnum, 2 K22 .22 LRs, a K frame 357 Mod 19, too many snub-noses to count.

Particularly like the 357 Scandium Airlight or the 38 Airweight/Titanium Centennial models.

Centennial models are the state of the art in reasonably powerful and foolproof personal pocket protection.
