what's your survival rifle?

I will be taking mine to the grave with me.. in hopes I get reanimated as a Zombie.. I will be the first zombie with firearms... and give all of you a run for your money!:p

I would take my 10/22 my.22 revolver. I Guess out of my limited rifles collection, I would have to take the Enfield 30-06. If I had a choice, it would be a Marlin 336SS and a Magnum Research (in 30-30, of course).

Hopefully I have time to buy them before the survival scenario happens. If I buy two new guns now, my wife will leave me... haha

Man, I'd hate to go up againts Zombies with guns.

I keep my Savage 24 in 17hmr/20 gauge behind the seat of the truck. Its broken down into a short nylon gun case with 200 rounds of 17 and 40 rounds of 20 gauge in the case pockets.
Its not a fighting gun just a game getter.

I'd take a M249 SAW, ammo wouldn't be a problem with the amount of people on here carrying 223/5.56, I'd be easy to find more.

And I'd never be out gunned, well apart from the guy who said he'd take a Barrett M82.

right. 30 pounds of ammo and 20 pounds of guns

along with a 60 pound back pack full of survival gear, like a tent, sleeping bag, cooking utensils, toilet paper, socks, some grub, rain jacket, etc.

That ought to just about paralyze the average joe. A 22 lr with a brick of ammo would be about it. Or maybe a small caliber centerfire, like a 22 hornet. A full out assault rifle or big game rifle with 100 rounds would add up to lots of extra combersome weight.

As well, a person in survival mode would need a couple of pounds of venison per day to maintain body weight. Chopping firewood, hunting, hauling water, tending a fire, keeping an eye out for two legged varmints, would burn up a lot of energy. 43 calories per ounce X 32 ounces = 1376 for two pounds of meat. Would barely keep a 200 pound fatso like me going.
" For one 3-ounce serving of venison, you would have approximately:
•130 calories
•26 grams protein
•2 grams of fat
•67 milligrams cholesterol
•0.9 grams saturated fat" From About.com

good thing a 215 pound fatso like me would eat a half a backstrap in one sitting if nobody was there to stop me...plus, I have fat reserves haha

Out of all my guns my Remington Nylon 66 .22LR would probably be my choice. It's a 40 year old gun that still shoots like new, requires no lube whatsoever, and is extremely accurate for a .22...plus it has no Serial number so it's invisible!

I have a t-shirt that reads "The last person on Earth will carry an assault rifle" and I am inclined to believe that. In my head it's my HK91, but it would probably be an AR15 as its just a bit more practical for every day use.

so for this thread I am looking at a very woods survival situation where you have to hunt your own food and live for several months on what the land can provide.

Well, if it were the next several months... the ground and water are already frozen (think setting concrete, harder by the minute for the next 5 to 6 months)...

What are the local "native woods folk" doing out in the woods:
the big smart ones are hibernating...
the little smart ones have been storing food for months...
the ones still walking around are eating twigs...
plants are freeze dried and/or covered in snow...

Maybe take a hint from the winged ones... already flown south!

Could survival be done going "out into the woods" where I live for the next several months right now? Yes, but succumbing to the negative double digits that you are sure to encounter during those months is definitely right up there "out in the woods".

Now, if I get to come home every night... been doing this for years and it has worked out pretty alright so far! If you have ever lived in the bush for any amount of time, you probably already have enough food stocked up for those "several months"...

I would take a certain very accurate .223 bolt gun that I have; just because I happen to really enjoy shooting it the most out of all of my rifles.

If I remember correctly, the men of the Lewis and Clarke expedition ate nine pounds of meat per day.

this CVA Stalker in .223 would not be a bad choice

Lewis and Clark

Those guys worked really hard and were lean and young. I however, can't work very hard, and am far from young and lean. My body fat could drop 30 pounds easy, and maybe 40 or more. Took a 7 day back packing trip one time in the colorado high country many years ago. Moved a few miles every day, and ate that wonderful freeze dried stuff you can carry. Lost a pound per day. It took a couple of months to regain that weight, and I started pretty lean, at 160 pounds before the trip.

Getting enough food would prove to be a challenge. And if everybody like us was out rumaging around killing everything that could be eaten, in about 4 months the elk and deer would be fairly well eradicated or chased out of their habitat. When the bears break hibernation they would be next on the list. Grouse and sage hens, doves, rabbits, pretty soon coyotes, squirrles, damn near everything. Rivers would get fished out. Beavers---well, everything would be fair game.

I'll opt for staying in town and staging a survival thing where I can rest in bed. There was a thread one time in TFL about the residents protecting their property from street looters and gangs in Florida after a devastating hurricane. That tactic seems plausible, as some of the neighbors around here are hunters and urban rednecks. My house has several big game rifles and shotguns and revolvers. There are several hundred rounds of ammo. Some of the neighbors are also like me. So the bada$$e$ would probaby get some medicine for what ails them, as least till they wiped us out.

thankfully there are going to be many who share the same strategy idea where many believe that the game will disappear quickly. so very few will probably actually try to risk going into the woods.

ColoradoRedneck, good odds that the best survival rifle would be the one which kept little nibblers out of your garden. Well, actually, added them to the protein supply. :D

I have a GSG-5 .22lr pistol that has a colapsable stock (and got the SBR tax stamp), HK accessory fore grip with flashlight and green laser, HK scope mount with red dot, fore grip with internal bipod, double magazine connectors and a three point harness. This thing is accurate beyond belief, light as a feather, and as dependable as a sunrise. My backup would be my Walther P22 which has been flawless since day one.

You can carry a lot of .22 rounds.
