What make and model of 9mm do you have?

The CZ series of 9 mm s is very nice. Good, solid, affordable.

My favorite 9 is my DW Guardian 1911. Great gun but not inexpensive.

I own Sigs P225, P228, P226 and P938 that are all very nice shooters.

Also, Glocks 17, 19, 26, 34 and 43, I've got 9mm Glocks covered and all of them are very reliable.

Lastly, own a Ruger LC9s that shoots good but has some kind of trigger slap against my trigger finger that I find painful after 50 rounds. But in a defense situation this would not be an issue.

I was just reading a review of the Walther Creed, which was given very high marks in spite of a low price.
I had a Walther CCP for a brief time, another attempt by Walther at an affordable pistol, and though my example shot OK, it has been widely condemned by the press.

My only modern 9mm is a SIG P938, which is a very light, compact "hide-out" type pistol, and while it is becoming one of my favorites, it's anything but a general purpose pistol.

Have used my Taurus PT709 (idk what size you were looking for) for years now. They are super cheap at this point, but Taurus is known for stiff slide springs(aka make sure the wife can/likes racking the slide on it, my gf hated it). It's a great little shooter and if you don't like the 2 finger grip Pierce makes a grip extension that makes it a lot more comfortable.

FWIW I am also planning on getting an M&P9 M2.0 in the near future. I'll let you know what I think when I get there.

Soooooooo many options out there.

If it were my wife, I'd recommend the H&K VP9. In fact, that's what I'm getting my wife into now. It's very adjustable and very shootable.

"...I've decided on a 9mm so my wife could use it..." Chambering is irrelevant if the pistol is too big for her hand. A BHP fits most small hands, but so does a 1911 style. Berretta M9's, CZ 75, etc, do not fit small hands.
Take her shopping. What works for you may or may not work for her. Too big and she won't practice.

The firearms I currently own that are chambered in 9 mm Luger are the following:

Smith & Wesson M&P Shield,
SIG-Sauer P250 subcompact,
SiIG-Sauer P320 compact,
Beretta mini-Cougar 8000D,
Beretta 92FS,

also a Hi-Point 995TS pistol caliber carbine, but you were asking about handguns.

I've had several over the years, but my current 9mm firearms are a Canik TP9SA, a Glock 43 and a Sig MPX 9mm carbine.

I will probably get a CZ P10C when I'm able to.

I have a "full" size all steel 9mm. The CZ 75B is the one that fit my hand well, points more or less instinctively and shoots very accurately. As I get more used to it I find it easier to shoot small groups with at 25 yards than my 22 Autos. It isn't - no that's not correct; I'm not as accurate with it as I am with my 357 but I can see that it will happen when I have shot it more.
I tried a lot of guns, including Glock, 1911s, Browning and others but the CZ 75B was simply the best for me.

My favorite 9mm are any of the HKs. They are easy to shoot, soft recoil, good ergos, good sights. I recommend the P series... all top tier guns. Personal favorite the P2000SK.

Kahrs are a nice size for small hands. Harder to cycle but easy to shoot. Personal favorite is the TP9.

Two I'm fond of are the Walther PPS and the similar sized S&W Shield. Walther PPQ is a nice gun. Very fast and light trigger.

The G19 is a good size. Shoots well. Simple.

Hard to beat a Beretta 92. Look for a Vertec style straight back strap for a smaller grip. Excellent range gun many women like because it's a soft shooter.

Easiest to rack may be the Lionheart/ Daewoo. Neat guns, neat trigger.

as another pointed out the BHP has a grip for small hands...and with different panels works for larger hands as well...can not get a slimmer grip frame without going to a single stack...

Currently:

Kel-tec P11 - Totally reliable and a masterpiece of packaging brought to us by the 10 round mag limit. :D

S&W M&P9 2.0 - great grip and trigger, big capacity, super reliable.

SIG SP 2022 - Still pretty new. All good so far. Reliable. Accurate and comfortable to operate. If you like Gen III S&W, you'd probably like this pistol too, unless it's "gotta be steel". Got it for the DA/SA trigger system which I prefer over SA striker fired guns for carry. Now if I can find a good holster...

I've owned a ton and will own a ton more. I tend to get bored and sell to buy new things even though I don't really want to sell anything. It's not the best or most affordable habit. Right now I have a P320 Compact and a PPS M2. I like them both. That said, there is an absolute plethora of great 9mm pistols to choose from right now. You're in the market at the right time.

I will say, there aren't many 9mm pistols I DON'T personally like. The only ones I can think of are really cheap, 1911s because I just think those should be in .45, and XD pistols for various reasons that I won't get into because everyone will disagree and tell me I'm wrong anyway... Eh, we all have some biases though...

Closest I can come to the OP's mentioned PT99 - in terms of size, and capacity, is my CZ75B stainless. My CZ PCR is smaller and is an alloy frame.

I've made the implicit assumption that the OP is interested in something similar to the PT99, but mentioning "today" suggests something of more recent design or trend. For me that could mean modern polymer. Going that way, my HK P30 v3.
