What is your 'perfect' home defense handgun?

An important part of any "Don't wake the baby gun kit"

Well consider the baby in the Walking Dead being the only baby that never cries... so unrealistic :D Gotta have a pacifier, I should put a couple in my bug-out-bags...

Go to self-defense firearms for my home assuming all other layers of security are no longer in play?

- A 12-gauge, harder to miss, makes other baddies bug out.
- 20 rounds of 9mm in my XDM.
- KABAR BK7 :P
- Sharp Stick
- My 4 year old when he's had no nap
- Throw treats at the baddies and unleash the dog
- The perimeter Minnesota Mosquitoes will leave them light headed

I really love the idea of a full-sized .45 acp home defense handgun. However, my G19 is the pistol I shoot most often and best. She has a rail for a light. It's also really, really easy to just take her off my hip and put her on the nightstand.

In terms of a pistol I prefer my Para Ordnance 1911 for home defense but I always keep my folding stock SPAS 12 on hand in case I feel that I need something a bit more compact but think I won't be able to aim as well at that moment.

I don't know what a perfect handgun is but my goto is an HK 9. I also keep a Glock 10mm handy. I don't know if either are perfect or even good choices those those are what I keep at the ready by my bed.

Reaching high is a Sig Tac Ops 9mm with a TLR-HL attached--Reaching low is a M&P .357 Sig with a TLR-HL attached. Those have been my "perfect" home defense weapons for quite a while now.

Smith 625 .45ACP with multiple moon clips. No reason to have something small or concealable in your home. 200gr +P from a 4" barrel is just under the speed of sound.

It's a little early to call it since I've only had it two weeks but I'm really liking my CZ75 SP01. Night sights, no recoil, and 18+1 rounds.

I either have a 1911 or some other flavor .45 on nightstand. Along with ultra fire light and electronic muffs

20 Gauge Manual with 2 rounds of steel shot followed by 3 rounds of buck. The sound of a shell entering the chamber screams "LEAVE NOW". If they don't, they deserve it.

To me the perfect gun would not have a silencer, but only for "tactical" reasons. Real life, PC anti-gun state, aftermath tactics that is. I live in MD, a very anti-gun state, and worse, I live in Baltimore. I can assume after even the most obviously clean self-defense situation that I'll be charged, because that is what the Baltimore prosecutor's office does. A silencer doesn't look very PC, so to a non-gun (and possibly anti-gun) Baltimore City jury, it will not bode well for me to have used one. I am in the market for electronic hearing protection (which will give the added advantage of amplified sounds when not shooting) and in the meantime I'll risk some hearing damage over an increased chance of ending up in prison.

That said, my ideal/perfect home defense guns aren't necessarily what I use. I carry at home, but I live in MD and I'm not self-employed or overly politically connected so I cannot carry outside my home. So, it is often a smaller gun that gets the call most of the time (my Taurus 85, one of my Rossi 461s, or my SIG P290RS). However, my "ideal" HD gun, also my nightstand gun, sometimes gets carried around the apartment.

For me, an 8 shot (or better) full size or larger compact sized .45ACP or a 6-shot N-frame .45LC are the perfect HD gun. Plenty of power (by handgun standards) and it gets it from a big slow bullet instead of velocity so it is less likely to overpenetrate and go through your attacker. I used to go with a 1911 or my S&W 1911SC, but I now prefer DA/SA or DAO with no manual safety to worry about so I use a S&W 625MG in .45LC and a .45ACP SIG P250 Compact.

As for the tactical light, I prefer one that is not weapon mounted (unless using a long-gun) so that I don't have to cover what I'm shining my light on with the muzzle until I'm sure of my target. Though, for now, I can see the utility for some limited and temporary situations. I broke my wrist about a month ago so with the case on my left (non-shooting) arm I only have real use of one hand which makes handling both the gun and the flashlight impossible. If it doesn't come off this week (it may come off when I go to the doctor on Wednesday) I may look for a cheap weapon mounted light to use until the cast comes off.
