What is your answer when you are asked why do you carry a gun.

Don't know if it's been said yet, but I would say:

"I am prepared to give up my life while protecting my family, but I will not ask them to give up their life because I'm not prepared."

the biggest convo stopper I've had when asked was:

"why don't you?"

tho sometimes it carries on and I inquire as to why they have greater respect for the safety and lives of criminals than they do for themselves and their own families, not to mention innocent bystanders. Usually, that changes their attitude. ;)

Police said that on Jan. 8, Arthur Rappaport was followed to his home on Steeple Pointe Drive around 10:15 p.m. and assaulted in his garage by two men. One of the men had a gun.

Investigators said Rappaport and the robbers got into a scuffle and the man was pistol whipped. Police said both robbers were wearing expensive ski masks.

Rappaport's wife, Lisa, and their two children, an 11-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl suffered minor injuries after they were assaulted and tied up inside the home, investigators said.

for me It's not often I get asked because they know, it would be because they had no idea and my shirt rides a little too high....

Reasons

The few times I've been asked(I don't make a habit of letting people know I'm carrying)I tell them that I've always carried weapons-in my 4+ years in the military and 27 years in LE.I made a few serious enemies in my LE days. Most are out of prison now,so there's a reason.I live in a relatively small place in terms of people knowing each other.
When I'm travelling,it's a good idea too.I'm older and I don't plan being a victim if I can do something about it.I got a LEOSA credential from my former agency and with it I can carry concealed anywhere in the US except on a plane.I have to also carry proof of LE level qualification within the last year on the type(caliber)of weapon I'm carrying.
Retired LE people probably get less questions about this issue than most because they are presumed to be competent with firearms.
I personally believe any law abiding citizen should be able to carry anywhere anytime as long as they pass a proficiency test. That qualification even applies to active LE and it's a good idea to qualify periodically.
Shooting,unlike riding a bike,or some other things,is a perishable skill.

"Don't ask, don't tell". It is a concealed weapon and not a topic for conversation with anyone who would ask such a question. I have never been asked because in 30 years of carrying concealed, only my wife and sons ever knew.

+1 to the Zombies

I don't get found out on my own much, but sometimes I get "ratted out" by my wife or the NRA sticker on my truck. I really don't mind, after a couple years of getting used to carrying it is not a big deal to me anymore if people find out.

I usually respond to the why do you carry question, "It is my right. Besides, haven't you ever watched Zombieland or Shaun of the Dead?"

Because my father was the victim of an attempted robbery in a large upscale mall parking garage. Luckily he was carrying that day :)

++1 for the Zombies!

My 13 year old daughter asked me why I have a handgun and I told her "you never know when a zombie will attack".

Last week, as I was buying a few boxes of range ammo, my daughter asked why I needed so much. I responded with "I am just getting ready for the zombie invasion". She chuckled and we proceeded to have a lengthy discussion on what was the propper way to kill a zombie, since they are already dead.

I am going to have to sit her down and go over the whole 2A thing soon. And maybe explain to her that I am getting ready for the day that she starts dating!;)

Because I have the right and the responsibility to personally protect my family, myself, my friends, and others who may be the victims of serious criminal assault.

Carry Questions

"What if somebody needs shooting" or "Because I can" as a wisecrack to those I know will not be persuaded to the pro-gun side.
