What is your answer when you are asked why do you carry a gun.

...I think keeping the fact from everyone helps the anti gun crowd. We will be better off if someday the general population accepts that law abiding citizens with guns are an asset to the community.

I agree with the premise that it would be ideal if the general population accepted gun carrying law abiding citizens. However, I do not carry to be a poster boy for second amendment rights. I carry soley to protect myself and immediate family.

I once was the last diner in a small establishment when a person entered and committed an armed robbery in front of me. From a tactical perspective, I wish to be in control of the timing of if and when I pull my gun. I don't want the person next to me expecting that I'm going to, glancing at me expectantly, or saying something urging my action. I don't want a person next to me acting bold or foolish because they know I am carrying and expect I will back them up. I like the elements of personal control and surprise. I will or I won't pull my gun depending upon my assessment of the situation at hand.

For this reason, I don't open carry and I don't tell. I keep what I do to myself -- to eliminate as many other people from the equation as possible.
YMMV

1] Because I care and because it's the right thing to do. Why? Why do you carry a gun?

2] That's what shoots off the bullets! Duh!

3] To **** off the Liberals. Is it working?

I'm ready to die for this country, the citizens, and the rights they are granted, therefor I am DEFINITELY going to enjoy the rights I am fighting for.

Why do you wear a seatbelt?

Why do you lock the doors on your house and car?

Why do you wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle?

Why do you wear a helmet when riding a bike? a skateboard? rollerblades?

simple reason why I carry because it's just like any of those other safety precautions, it's a tool that I hope I never need but it is there in case the need should arise.

crime can happen anywhere, even your so called "nice neighborhoods" aren't immune to crime. Right now most crime in my area is on a break for the winter like every year, it takes a decline but as soon as it starts warming up the criminals come out more often.

I don't get asked because no one knows that I carry. Are you (OP) telling people that you carry? What is your motive for doing so?

Don't let em know that way you won't have to explain why

I don't tend to tell people I carry but sometimes people find out, the girl I just began dating recently found out when we were in a store, I went to grab something out of my pocket and accidently lifted my shirt above my gun, she promptly noticed and pulled my shirt back down for me. Then asked me all about it in the car when we left. But I don't tend to tell people the only people that really know are my few best friends.

I've not read all the responses to this thread,so forgive me if I'm repeating what's already been said...For my money, nobody has answered this question better than American Handgunner magazine's John Connor. Google search "John Connor Little Lizzie" and you'll see what I mean.

It depends

If they are more open to it.. I just give it to them straight. If they are an extremely liberal person(more and more these days) I just give out some statistics and let them know that it is a last resort thing...A lot of people do not realize that cops can't always be there. I try to put things in perspective and make them realize that a lot of stuff can happen by the time you get through to the police and waiting fiive or so minutes.

If that doesn't work I tell them to move to Britain where the cops there can defend them with little bats.

Typically those who ask have issues of one sort or another with carrying. I don't engage them by replying. Although I might give them a firm, silent stare before walking away.

I don't need to justify my behavior or my life's choices to anyone.

I've never been asked that

HI,
The only countries in which I have carried fireamrs are Israel, Namibia and South Africa. No one ever asked me why do I carry...
Brgds,
Danny

I just ask them if they know the 2nd amendment. If they don't, I explain it to them. If they do, I just say, "well then, why are you asking me"?
