What is an excellent snubie?

If you want quality and are ruling S&W out, that leaves you with Colt, Ruger and the K6 you mentioned. I'd lean towards either a Ruger or the K6, depending on how much you want to spend and if you want a small frame or medium frame.

Sure, buy a Korth.../ they have some 3" guns that are available in US.

( but the S&W ...model 627's in 2 5/8" ...or model 66's in a 2 1/2" are very good guns...and readily available ). You already went cheap with the Chiappa ...and the Kimber is no better in my opinion...

Sounds like you have a problem without a solution unless you are willing to step back in time a few years. Then include an older S&W in the equation.

Your mission needs statement is poorly defined to start with. You are not stating what you want but rather what you don't want.

Is this for carry or plinking?

I'm not exactly sure why you're ruling out S&W. Granted, their older models are superb, but even their newer ones (like my 637-2) are excellent options.

Your options are only limited by your budget (which you did not provide). But assuming you're considering Korth, you probably have a very generous budget.

On the lower end of the budget spectrum, you've got Taurus, Charter and even Rock Island (Armscor). Going from there, Ruger and S&W. Then PC S&W and Kimber. Korth is probably at or near the top of the spectrum.

I've only owned Rugers and S&W's so I will not comment of the reliability of the other brands.

"high quality snubie (oxymoron?)"

Why? What does size/barrel length have to do with quality? And what makes Korth superior to Ruger, S&W or Colt as a defense gun? Pricier, yes, but high price does not necessarily mean better.

Jim

Thanks FITASC. I haven't tried them but I will. They're not listed on the German website, which is how I missed them.

OK guys, sorry if I posted confusingly.

I have S&W guns. A Model 27-6, a Model 13-3, a Model 19-4, a Model 41 and a Model 52. I bought them new and I cherish them. I am a retired Bullseye shooter and I swear by these guns. So, if you are offended by my rejection of the Model J you have the wrong guy.

I'm looking for a gun that is not just a tool but also something that I enjoy looking at and handling and shooting accurately. The Korth is all that and much more and if you haven't seen and handled and shot one you owe it to yourselves to do it when the opportunity arises.

Tomorrow I'll be shooting the Kimber K6s of a friend and he reports a fantastic trigger that stages like no other. His had a retail of $919 and he got it for $800 incl.tax, possibly half the cost of the Korth.

Give up and get a Smith Model 60...quality that's over a century old. Korth...looks like a Charter, only blockier and with a price tag that's truly unbelievable. Rod

Well, since you already have a 19-4, I have to assume that it's not the most beautiful snubbie ever made. Pinned and recessed goodness.

I will readily admit that I like S&W revolvers. I have not had the opportunity to shoot a Kimber, but when the chance arises, I will view it with an open mind.

I also have not had the opportunity to shoot a Korth, but they have definitely gotten excellent reviews in every area except price. However, the price of a Korth is as much or more than having a Smith & Wesson fully customized by a specialist gunsmith. And if you get a gun customized, then you can have it exactly how you want it. Some people would still feel that a Korth is better made and has better resale value, but I think there are advantages and tradeoffs to be made either way.

For myself, if I was choosing a premium revolver, I would choose a Smith & Wesson and then have it customized exactly how I want it. Depending on the need, I might start with an older gun or a newer one. A Smith & Wesson revolver that is blueprinted to good specifications is an excellent gun.

A good gunsmith can also make a Ruger into a wonderful gun, but I personally think that the trigger return is better on a Smith, and that matters to me.

Let us know what you think of the Kimber, and good luck on finding a revolver that you like.

I had the hots for a 649-2 or one of the 49s. I was thinking in terms of a range toy that could handle a lot of use and still double as a ccw if need be.

Exactly!
Sounds like a search for a status symbol more than for a good handgun.

My first thought would be a vintage 2” S&W Model 15.

I think you can spend more...but, I’m not sure you would have a better gun.

Vintage Colt are some great looking guns. The Cobra, and Pythons are tuned like Swiss watches. Also they do not seem to depreciate very much if any these days.

To KyJim.
Thanks. I called them yesterday and the owner said that he won't order them because they can't get them. He couldn't get me off his phone fast enough.

FITASC suggested the outfit in FL but they only deal in old guns that they buy from collections in Germany. Nice people though.

An older 2-1/2" 19 is about good as it gets, there are also some 2" 15s out there. Don't know about Korth, above my pay grade. For carry, I have a couple 642s but they ain't for everybody, they're more utility than a thing of beauty but they do work as advertised. I'd like a Dick Special, more to have than to shoot. I want S&W guns to shoot.
