"Truck Gun"

truck gun? hell, i'm old enuff to remember rifle racks across the back window of most pickups. usually a shotgun and a rifle rode there in plain sight. you would see them everywhere, driving down the road, in parking lots, even at work especially during hunting season. cops never gave them a second look, no one had to hide them, no one thought it was odd to see or got scared when they saw them. funny thing, i don't remember it being as violent back then.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately (my next purchase actually). I think the main criteia for a truck gun would be something that can shoot through the windows. Second criteria is SIMPLICITY. I am thinking a .357 snub or 3 inch. I am leaning toward an SP101 but I figure if its going to be rolling around in the glove compartment or center console I might as well get a Taurus.

When did they disappear?
I remember seeing them all the time. I grew up in upstate NY and they were prevaliant even there.
I haven't seen one in years.:(

I keep a SS S&W .357 in my truck as well as the .45 I carry.

I still have a couple of them truck racks, thing is they make the gun very visible. So we now use seat covers that have a gun holder built in. Most rural folk carry at the least a 22 for varmints, 2 legged and 4

Care to link to where these seat covers with gun holders can be found? Kinda cool Idea I never thought of before.

I have a Glock 26 in my truck at all times. It won't rust & is almost indestructable. If someone steals it, they have an ugly gun that was not very expensive.

Back window racks fell out of favor because of thefts.

I have a little .380 in there all the time. Sometimes I also have a .45ACP in there, when I'm carrying it.

I would like to have a short shotty in there too, but I want it concealed. Haven't figured out how to do that yet.

I would never leave a gun in my car or truck. The last thing I want to do is give a free gun to some hood that has broken into my vehicle.

Sometimes it is required to leave your gun in your vehicle if you are going places that do not allow firearms. In my state you cant bring them in a few places like the courthouse, hospitals, bars, etc. So in those cases you have to leave your gun in your vehicle or you will be clearly breaking the law.

Thats when a good car/truck safe (locked case) can be a solution to the issue. I was thinking of something cheap for a car gun like a Ruger P95 (about $300) so its not so bad vs losing my main carry weapon.

currently a Sigma .40

As far as a handgun, in the PRNY we cannot leave one unattended legally, nor would I ever leave one in the truck. One problem is that if another family member drove the truck, and got stopped, they would be looking at felony possession of a handgun, and I would be looking at allowing them to possess one of mine, also a felony. (Oh, to be in a Free State) I live in the boondocks, so if a trip up to Rochester is required, I dress appropriately with my old hotrodded Security Six. As a truck gun, I have used an old Stevens Browning pattern pump 12 bore, and an H&R single 20 with a little sleeve on the stock with 5 rounds of 00 on either of them. We cannot carry loaded long guns in a vehicle here, so the one lunger 20 is a fast load for those inviting squirrel woods ( I keep a handfull of #6 shotshells in the console) or the odd rabid skunk/raccoon. There usually is a .22 WMR clip fed bolt gun behind the seat for errant woodchucks or fox in season...

i keep a .22 pistol in my car. it's a tiny little saturday night special, somethign you wouldn't mind being taken from you if someone broke in or if you used it and it became evidence. also with the .22 you can hide all 11 shots behind a quarter at 20 feet in rapid fire, it's perfect for making follow up shots and accurate shots.

so .22 pistol is great?

Beats pointing a finger and going bang bang. Most of us out in the country have one in the truck, tractor, barn and a few other places as they are inexpensive and get the job done.

Country boys can survive as bosephus said.

I'm with Dal and Dribble, when I was a kid growing up in DC. my folks bought the farm- literaly-, they did buy a farm:), not pass on. This is where my Wife and I live now in Pa.. Back in the sixties every truck, and I do mean every truck around here had a gun rack with at least two guns in it. It was most always a combo or all three of of the following;
a Shotgun, a .22, and a Deer rifle.
There was no fear of theft, it just did not happen. You did not need to put a lock on anything, because no one was low enough to steal a mans gun, or anything else for that matter. And if anyone entertained the idea he also had to realize that he would be shot if he was caught in the act.Stealing was something that just wasn't done back then. I believe that our society has not progressed, but regressed in my lifetime. Honor and Dignity are the two most important building blocks for any human or society if he/she, or it is to last. and it appears that they are being shunned and forgoten in this age.
I do see some still these days, esp. among the "Plain Folk" here. That would be the Amish, Mennonite, and Huttite peoples. BTW, although they mostly keep to themselves, I find them to be of the finest sort, you can always tell their farms from the cleanliness and order.
But I digress, sorry for the rambling. I think a Stainless Revolver in .38, .357 is the best choice for a "Truck Gun" as far as a handgun and a .22 and/or pump shotgun is a proper long gun.
Although an SKS or Mini 14 would be excellent choices as well, depending on what you want to use them for.
My personal Truck Gun is an old "beater" Mossberg 500, with a box or so of #6 and a packet or so each of double ought and Rem. slugs. That covers a very wide spectrum of possible needs for me.
I long for the days when you could just stop on the side of the road and go after some quail, grouse, pheasant or other small game on the edge of a local farm without giving it a second thought.:(.
Just my thoughts on the matter.

Pistol a S&W mod 64
Rifle a Mosin Nagant.
Shotgun a New England 20 gauge
they all get the job done and it isn't the end of the world if someone gets sticky fingers
