Time to buy? (AR, AK,etc. and hi cap mags)

Is now the best time?

Not really, but now is better than later when they may become unavailable.

Having lived through the '94 AWB, I acquired most, if not all, of what I wanted immediately thereafter.

Of course, there are always "wants" that occur and these can be handled in the meantime- for however long that lasts.

Even if the much-feared AWB never materializes, the increased purchases keep the industry strong and that is not a bad thing at all.

I feel like the AR industry is huge even before this buying craze. I work for a large FFL and even before all this... people can't get enough AR's, Magpul accessories, and other tactical goodies. It is a rather large part of the gun industry... which I would think is a rather large portion of US jobs. Now is not the time to make rash comments or rants, but let your voice be heard via your local politicians.

I'm curious how currently owned rifles would not be grandfathered into any coming legislation. Would they be banking on owners turning them in willingly?

Seizing and confiscating would violate a few other constitutional rights - 4th, 5th, 9th, and possibly 10th off the top of my head. So unless the plan is to trash the whole document, I don't think this would be possible.

Please don't use the word liberals, use anti's. There are many liberal gun owners 42-47% of Democrats own guns. We don't need to alienate any gun owners.

As far as the time to buy an AR or AK. Well that all depends if you want one. I have seen a lot of people this weekend buying AR's because they think they are going to be banned. I have no issues at all with someone being afraid. I over heard three guys who were buying them so they "sell them after the ban and make a fourtune". This sickens me. I am afraid many were snatched up for that very reason..

To the OP, if you can find the AR you want, I suggest buy it. They might be a scarce commodity for a while.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^what he said. I actually have some friends who are democrats and used to be anti's and now go to the range with me.

I'll remind everyone that until we see actual bills introduced in the House and Senate that EVERYTHING is rumor.

I've been seeing some pretty damned wild rumors over the past couple of days, too, up to and including "there's a bill currently being debated secretly that would use the military to search every home in the country to confiscate all weapons!!!"

Supposedly the guy "knew" this was the truth because his "friend knows someone who knows!"

That's not-so-secret code for "Don't know what the hell I'm talking about but I'll talk wildly just because I can!"

When you spread rumors, you do yourself and every other gun owner a HUGE disservice because you're just fueling the mounting panic.

I don't know about the rest of the staff here, but I'm inclined to clamp down, and not too gently, on rumors AND the rumor mongers who post here.

Ditto on that, Mike!

And as posters have pointed out, go rant about liberals vs. conservatives elsewhere. We are pro or antigun in discussion.

Using such cliches show a poverty in understanding the debate.

Hope they didn't bet the farm on that. I recall Feinstein stating on MTP that the new being drafted bill for introduction would include limitations (if not an outright ban) on the transfer of existing "assault weapons."

I wouldn't really plan on that portion getting through, but stranger things have happened

They have picked up on the failure of the first AWB to accomplish their goals. The tech reports indicated there were no changes in crime indices due to the AWB. The conclusion was that it had too many flaws and loopholes. A tougher one was suggested at the time.

Supporting that is the Australian experience where the 'sportsmen' turned in their guns and rampages ceased or diminished.

That's the logic - I've heard the presentations.

Feinstein is proposing a "prospective" law, not retroactive. Here's what that term means in the legal world:

LAW, PROSPECTIVE. One which provides for, and regulates the future acts of men, and does not interfere in any way with what has past.

PROSPECTIVE. That which is applicable to the future; it is used in opposition to retrospective. To be just, a law ought always to be prospective. 1 Bouv. Inst. n. 116.

A Law Dictionary, Adapted to the Constitution and Laws of the United States. By John Bouvier. Published 1856.

So it wouldn't apply to the past, and existing ownership would seem to be grandfathered in, ie. it would only apply to new purchases after passage of the ban.

I get most of my mags on-line from 44mag.com

A lot of the supply is out of stock. M1A 20 rounders, most AR15, Glock 21,30,19,17 are just about gone. Mecgar for Sigs are the same way.

I am going over to the LGS in a few and see what they have. If they have them I am going to pick up a few. I hope they are not all gone.

The storm is coming. . .I can just feel it in my bones.

I concur. We know nothing yet, and from working in the industry, I can tell you the fearmongers really make things difficult for everyone.

What I can tell you is this. The bills Feinstein, Schumer, and Lautenberg will be advancing in January are nothing new. They've been submitting them like clockwork every January for years. The difference is that they've been given a greater sense of urgency by the Connecticut shooting.

That's right. 20 dead kids=huge political capital for these people. Any decent person should be disgusted by that.

So, we'll see a (slightly) revised version of the AWB renewal bill that dies in committee every winter, and Lautenberg will push his bill for closing the "gun show loophole."

Tom, I'm not even sure I qualify as a decent person and I'm disgusted by it.
And yet many politicians aren't. Go figure. The oddest reactions are from the laymen. I point this out, and they ignore it and respond with "well, we've got to do something."

Brilliant thread at a difficult time. Thank you for keeping it real.
Facebook for example is a mess right now and very... "unreal"

Incidentally; question for staff/mods has TFL thought about having a Facebook presence? I started a "Secret" second amendment group which is starting to roll under it's own steam. Would it be beneficial for owners and enthusiasts to have a more robust network?

I would bet there will be a provision in the new bill that states all firearms must be locked up in a DOJ approved cabinet/safe and a very harsh penilty if you were not to comply or one of your guns were used in a crime and you did not have it locked up in the approved way .

I also would not be surprised if the rest of the country was interduced to the bullet button .

One more speculation if I may :D The new bill when first introduced will be extreme and most likely jaw dropping  . This is not to be fear mongering . It's just what I would do . Ask for the moon and see what I can ultimately get .

I read in the American Rifleman that one of the provisions they want to lobby for is that your banned firearms are not inheritable or sellable. I guess you would keep them until you die and then ATF will take them out and shoot them (lol). I might have to lose mine just before I croak (lol).

Just to share, I went to a Sportsman's Warehouse and a Gander Mountain today. The Sportsman's Warehouse had no semiautomatic rifles at all, and no AR mags (didn't look at AK mags). I know where they usually keep the AR type rifles, and the whole rack was completely empty.

At the Gander Mountain, there were no AR mags (again, didn't look for AK). They had a piston AR (couldn't see the brand), an FAL clone, G3 clone, an FN SCAR, and two Mini 14s.

So yeah, I'd say now is a good time to try to get some mags if you can find them.
