Time to buy? (AR, AK,etc. and hi cap mags)

I will try and keep this post simple and clean.

Is now the best time to buy AR, AK, etc. type rifles and other guns(rifles, handguns, etc.) that take high capacity magazines?

After recent events, many people foresee some form of law coming into place that may restrict new purchases of firearms. Do you believe it would be best to buy guns and accessories now? I ask, because after these recent events, guns, ammo, and accessories are in high demand.

Do you believe this demand is based on overreaction, or is it based on smart thinking? Should we buy now, at higher cost? Or should we hope the fire dies down?

Please do not turn this into politics, I simply want to know if now is the best time to buy.

If you're just now deciding to buy you are definitely behind the curve. Pandemonium has already descended upon my local shops. I looked, not a Glock standard capacity mag to be found in town. Have a good pile, but wish I had more.

This is worrying. I Just recently decided to build my first ar15. Was planning to start after the new year.. Now this tradegy and all the whispering. I havent even order one part yet. Just spent all my Christmas funds for gifts. Managed to find some PMAG gen3s and grabbed those.

I think some kind of ban will be attempted by the liberals in the coming weeks. Why not stock up if you feel like you need to on magazines or that AR or AK you've always wanted. Better safe than sorry. I have bought a few Pmags over the weekend just to round out my kit. No big deal.

I'm just wondering if it's wise to do so. There is some talk that there will be no grandfathering provisions—applied as sweeping classifications such as "Military type firearms". What does that mean to us each as an amnesty passes?

Where is this coming from? There has been no legislation proposed yet.

If you want one in the near future I'd suggest picking one up, if it's not already too late. I don't see sweeping legislation happening, but demand is unlike I've ever seen. I'm at the gun shop as we speak and ARs are flying off the shelves. I saw four sell in the first 15 minutes I was here.

Back during the summer I could sort of see how things were going, so I made a list of things I wanted that might fall under some potential upcoming ban. Thankfully I got everything by September and missed the various buying sprees. If anyone has the intention of buying something that could be banned I cannot imagine why you would not do so now.

I fear the ban as well. I went and bought a semi auto 308 carbine, original plan was to start with a 308 bolt gun but I figured if a ban comes to play bolt guns would still be legal to buy. I'm sure current semi auto sport rifles will be grandfathered in, its gonna be a mess if they don't include that in the ban. Heck why are we so worried the end of the world is in a few days!!!

Yes, but what if the world does not end and we get sucked into some sort of black hole. I plan to take my guns and as many Chick-fil-A sandwiches as I can carry with me.

There is some talk that there will be no grandfathering provisions

Sen. Diane Feinstein plans to introduce an AWB day one ( her words ) . She also said that they learned from the last one . That to me means it will be different and more strict . She also stated that the AWB will ban the sale , transfer , importation and the possession of assault weapons not retroactively but prospectively

Not sure what prospectively means but it sounded to me that if you own them now you can keep them . I do believe a new AWB will pass but not if there going to take guns away . She is often the auther of these types of bills so she would be the one that knows what will be in the bill .

Did you want one before this? Are you going to buy something just for the sake of doing so because you may not be able to in the future? I don't see the reasoning here.. If you didn't need or want one before. Why would you need or want one now? I'm not asking the OP directly, just in general. I'm sure there are lots of people right now that never even thought of owning an AR until someone told them they may not be able to anymore. But here they are, paying inflated prices for one.

Well I have always wanted one, or two.:p However, it was going to be a few guns down the line. I wanted to get a new .357 revolver, a 1911, and a high capacity 9mm, then an AR type rifle. However, since things are looking the way they are, I am thinking of bumping the AR and 9mm to the my top two. I already have several guns, but nothing like an AR or 9mm; only hunting rifles, shotguns, and revolvers.

So I should be getting one now then? How about high capacity handguns?

My LGS says Glock hi cap mags are impossible to find already, no supplier of his has them. 30 round AR mags are the same. One of his suppliers sold 80,000 P-Mags Friday alone. The panic is upon us and may not subside for some time.

We're preaching to the chior.

Instead of ranting hear, write your congressmen/women. Make or voices heard.

The good Captain makes a most excellent point. As does Tom Servo in another thread talking about how we, being the gun culture, are our own worst enemies when it comes to a fatalistic output on possible upcoming bans.

Instead of buying one more PMAG, write a letter to your Congressman, print a bunch of copies, give them to the guys at your gun club and then pay the postage.

Use Twitter. Use Facebook. Post relevant articles about how no law would have stopped that coward. Get out the word. Don't just sit there and polish your shiny new lower and lust after what you are going to do when the boys in the blue berets show up, write/e-mail/call your legislators. Write an editorial for your local paper. Join the NRA. Join the SAF. Join GOA. Join the NSSF. All of those dues could be covered by what people are spending on PMAGs.

How quickly

can a ban be enacted? Doesn't it take a little time, a vote in Congress?
I have been planning on buying an AR type rifle for a year or so, but have postponed to get all my reloading gear in place. I may have waited too long??
I'm going to be out of state for about 10 days, and will not have a chance to aquire one 'til then.
Sure hope it takes longer, if in fact there is going to be an assault rifle ban re-instated.

It would likely take months, even assuming the votes are there.

Most folks may not know this, but Feinstein has tried to get the AWB renewed every January since it expired in 2004. It's always met a quick and quiet demise in committee. Even if a few folks change their minds, it's unlikely to fare any better this year.

Even if I'm wrong on that, stuff will get amended that one bloc doesn't like, and it'll get sent back to have a new version hammered out. Heck, if it looks like it has the slightest chance, I'm going to convince my Reps to add all sorts of crazy stuff to it to help kill it.

So, you've got a long back-and-forth, during which the public is going to want to know why Congress is wasting their time with stuff like this when other pressing issues have yet to be resolved.

In the meantime, the lingering unease is going to be enough to cause product shortages for quite some time.

BarryLee,

I'm glad my mouth was empty when I read your post. Hilarious.

As to the subject, I bought an evil black rifle some time back, not at the height of the last Obama panic, but before prices started to recede. I see the same rifle advertised now at the same price (devalued currency and all) that I paid then.

The issue, as Tom Servo suggests, is the votes aren't there for anything at all, even if Senate Democrats vote as a bloc. The House will never pass anything. The danger is the ever seductive (to the statists) executive order. "Stoke of the pen, law of the land. Cool." - Paul Begala, former Clinton aide.

Gentlemen, and ladies, now is not the time to quail in fear. Now is the time to hold our Congresscritters to account. Not one step backwards, dammit. Not one.
