In order to protect our members and TFL from possible litigation, all members must abide by the following new rules:

    1. Copying and pasting entire articles from another site to TFL is strictly prohibited. The same applies to articles from print or other media, and to posting photographs taken of copyrighted pages or other media.

    2. Copyright law provides for “fair use” of portions of a copyrighted work. You can copy no more than a SINGLE paragraph from the article to your post (3 or 4 sentences at most).

    3. You must provide a link to the article along with the name of website. For example: ww.xxx.yyy/zzz (The Lower Thumbsuck Daily News).

    4. You must provide, in your own words, a brief summary of the article AND your reasons for believing it will be of interest to TFL members. Failure to do so may result in the thread being closed or your post being deleted as a “cut and paste drive by.”

    5. Photographs and other images are also copyrighted. "Hotlinking" of images (so that it appears in your message) from other sites is also prohibited unless you own rights to the image. If you wish to share an image, provide a clickable link to it.

Posts that do not follow these new guidelines will be altered or deleted by staff. Members who continue to violate this policy may lose their posting privileges at TFL.

Thank you for your cooperation and your participation in TFL, the leading online forum for firearms enthusiasts.

THR is down right now...again

TFL was portscanned this morning from the webserver of a well-known, vocal, and sometimes tasteless liberal 501(c)(3)

Why would someone run a port scanner from their own web server? That's just weird. That would almost make me think that web server is compromised in some fashion. Then again, the person could just be a moron.

Me thinks it's about time for some radical, out-of-the-box thinking here. The current approach obviously ain't working.

Something like abandon the colo and run THR on a Linux box in Derek's basement and find an ISP who can provide some real DOS protection. Or something like that.

This DOS business is getting old. :barf:

How can we get the FBI involved?

Does it have to be commerce related?

If so, here's the concept: Sell banner ad space, keep the LLC holding the intellectual property a profit of $1 a year, and spread the rest around pro-gun charity...

In addition, if he was able to attract 100 sponsors, at $25/month, that's $2500 that'd pay for a LOT of bandwidth...

and no one thinks that it is zombies who are attacking THR? what happens when the site gets back up and then everyone finds out that HR1022 passed while the site was down?

well...

...cfrap...
This is gettin' outta' hand...I wonder what new BillsO'DestructionOf the 2ndAmendment are happening while we're all in Limbo...

What's the old saying:

"Once is happenstance, twice is a coincidence, the third time is enemy action."

And then there is the un-offical motto of the 11th Armored Cav Regt:

"Find The B@st@rds And Then Pile It On !!!!'

/moves over

Umm... grampster... I was using that remote. :(

And I'd like my Lagavulin 16 back now, too...

*sigh*

I have seen the "human-check" at various sites that have claimed to be victims of "ddos".
One uses a check-in that has numbers in a background that makes it impossible for machine readers to pick out the random number that is generated for each go at the entry page.
Another has a simple math problem that must be solved correctly to enter.

Those are succeptable to DoS attacks (and various other exploits) themselves, usually because most sites use the same basic software and there are known exploits for them. No solution is foolproof; the best stopgap solution for a DDoS is redundant, powerful servers located at different locations (ie expensive). If it's just a DoS attack, in which case it's exploiting a fundamental flaw in either the forum software or the underlying server software, that's another matter - and that's what you're trying to address. Yeah, they can happen in conjunction or as the same attack, but my perception says that's not what this is. Granted, I've got little to no information...

The FBI rarely acts nor do they care about internet crime for the most part with the exception of kiddie porn unless your a multi million dollar company.

but as it wasn't really an attack and I don't want lynch mobs forming, I'm not going to identify it.

Forget the oil soaked torches and pitchforks. Nuke the site (the four machines in Chicago) from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

Since I live in the western 'burbs of Chicago, If I could get a couple of minutes of warning to move the family down to the basement before the big fireworks show begins, I'd be most grateful. :D

P.S. I'd be willing to 'try' to film it, anybody got a nuclear blast proof camera I could borrow ????? ;)

Jorg, it's possible the site was compromised. However, it's a well-known group (not primarily anti-firearms; they're anti-something-else). If someone hacked it, it would probably be to deface their website, not to use as a staging area for more attacks. Furthermore, given their noteriety, they probably have halfway-decent security... even if they are running w2k3 and iis6. I'm sure there are much easier targets for an attacker who wants a cut-out server to use to launch attacks or scans.

Let's try to all keep our collective didies dry, shall we? As gratifying as it is to the ego to think that THR is the target of a vast conspiracy (which would mean that we, as the members, are accorded that much importance), it is unlikely to be the case. As much importance as THR may hold in your universe, it is one of approximately a skillion websites. THR is most likely down because some scrote (with a neckbeard and a ****ty ponytail) brought it down just because he discovered he could.

I appreciate the sharing of Network Security; as I admitted I am not there yet in studies, still many of you shared was I was invited to sit in on.

FBI? Horse feathers!
Forums existed before Internet, and some sort of gathering of persons will exist when I am dead and gone. Fora will continue in some form or another after THR, TFL , is gone, Earth is gone and somewhere in the Universe folks communicate using whatever means.

Now if Oleg, Rich, Derek, tyme where to be kidnapped, FBI would them come into play.
Direct criminal attacks, and such...

No disrespect, but We ain't that big of a deal in the big scheme of things.

I have wondered why like minded folks such as NRA, JPFO, GOA and others have not pooled resources to have a more secure ISP and data center like some big Corporations do.

I dunno, makes sense to me with so many websites, blogs, forums, sales outlets and such with Responsible Firearm Ownership , RKBA , Firearm Related products.

Steve

Howdy everyone...another THR refugee here.

Not having THR caused me to browse to other websites...including those that sell guns...

Long story short. THR's outage indirectly caused me to buy a new AR-15. So on the off chance that these attacks WERE "anti-gun" related...well, my retort is that all you did was cause me to get another firearm! :D

PS - Hi TFL!

Re: Pics

Check out Smoke-Rizen with a 1898 Rem rabbit ear SxS smoking them targets will ya? :D

Zak, great pics, thank you.

Spinner,
It is the shooter not the shooting iron for taking down Zombies.
That was one of the first lessons I passed onto you.

I tried to school that boy I did, I really did...:)
