ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Wearing a bright green T-shirt emblazoned with the word "Mexico," 18-year-old Marco Tapia couldn't wait to join the biggest march for immigrants he had ever seen. The Mexican-born high school senior was among about 30,000 who marched through St. Paul in support of immigrant rights, and among more than half a million people who rallied Sunday in 10 states. Dozens more marches were planned nationwide Monday.

"Hopefully this will change the way America thinks," said Tapia, a high school senior who is living illegally in Minneapolis with his mother and sister. "We're not criminals. We're just regular people like everybody else here."

With an overhaul of immigration law stalled in Congress, demonstrators urged lawmakers to help an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants settle legally in the United States.

The massive turnout at Sunday's protests — police estimated 350,000 to 500,000 in Dallas — continued to surprise organizers and police.

"This is a force, an energy here," said Amir Krummell, a U.S. citizen born in Panama, who marched to Dallas' city hall amid shouts of "Si Se Puede!", Spanish for "Yes, we can!"

In Salt Lake City, a rally expected to draw about 3,000 instead attracted about 20,000, police said, and 50,000 turned out in San Diego. Other demonstrations were held in New Mexico, Michigan, Iowa, Alabama, Oregon and Idaho.

"If we don't protest they'll never hear us," said Oscar Cruz, 23, a construction worker who marched in San Diego. Cruz, who came illegally to the U.S. in 2003, said he had feared a crackdown but felt emboldened by the large marches across the country in recent weeks.

In Birmingham, Ala., demonstrators marched along the same streets where civil rights activists clashed with police in the 1960s and rallied at a park where a statue of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. stands as a reminder of the fight for equal rights and the violence that once plagued the city.

"We've got to get back in touch with the Statue of Liberty," said the Rev. Lawton Higgs, a United Methodist pastor and activist. "We've got to get back in touch with the civil rights movement, because that's what this is about."

The rallies also drew counter-demonstrators.

In Salt Lake City, Jerry Owens, 59, a Navy veteran from Midway wearing a blue Minuteman T-shirt and camouflage pants, held a yellow "Don't Tread on Me" flag.

"I think it's real sad because these people are really saying it's OK to be illegal aliens," Owens said. "What Americans are saying is 'Yes, come here. But come here legally.' And I think that's the big problem."

Many groups had been preparing to rally since December, when the House passed a bill to build more walls along the U.S.-Mexico border, make it a crime to help undocumented immigrants and make it a felony to be in the country illegally. It is now a civil violation.

Since then, local and regional protests, supported by popular Spanish-language disc jockeys, quickly merged into national plans after hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated in dozens of cities last month, culminating March 25 with a 500,000-strong rally in Los Angeles.

"We don't have a leader like Martin Luther King or Cesar Chavez, but this is now a national immigrant rights movement," said Joshua Hoyt, director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, which has helped organize rallies around Chicago.

In Minnesota, Latin dance music blared, Mexican flags waved and even a mariachi band in full costume marched to the state Capitol. Homemade signs dotted the crowd: "I'm a taxpayer." "I'm a worker." "I got rights." "I am not a criminal."

Tapia, who plans to study graphic design at a community college, said life has been hard for his family — especially his mother, who has raised him and his sister working a variety of jobs. He hopes that will change.

"All we want," he said, "is a good American life."

Some key things in this really bother me. Not quite so long ago, thousands of people illegally on our soil, holding 'protests' or 'demonstrations' might have been called something different......like 'invaders' maybe? MILLIONS...11 MILLION or so ILLEGALS....larger than our current at home military force.....why do they even have ANY RIGHTS AT ALL!? NO RIGHT TO ASSEMBLE, PROTEST, DEMONTRATE, or even BE HERE AT ALL! Those are rights afforded to legal american citizens. (reguardless of race, color, creed, origins, ect. If you are LEGAL you are AMERICAN no matter where you came from. Race doesn't matter, none of our ancestors are FROM here either)

If you are not legal, and are rising up in force (ie thousands, millions strong) you are INVADERS. When did our countries soveriegn soil become so easily taken by foreign peoples!?!? What the hell is happening here!?

And to the people hear aiding such a force, if they are american citizens, doesn't that technically make them traitors?

I mean COME ON AMERICA! WAKE UP! If 11 million or so ILLEGAL foreigners on our soil isn't counted as a threat anymore, what the hell is!? If we don't do something about this soon, america will be a largly occupied country, legal amerians a minority, and never a shot fired! Are people now days that stupid? Heads in the sand.....or elsewhere?

Ah the irony.......

Under current Mexican Immigration law the students protesting wouldnt be allowed to immigrate to Mexico...LOL

I say we mirror Mexico's immigration laws and send any illegal immigrant who doesnt meet them back to Mexico.

Ahh, but they are just taking the jobs Citizens don't want(11 million of 'em, no less).

Imagine where our economy would be without them...

It costs money to round 'em up...

Their employers ,might have to close without them...

They're just like all the past immigrants, except for the crime and the welfare and the numbers and the economic problems and...

Hmmm, ok, the excuses do sound pretty hollow when you actually look at them, don't they.

remember to words things correctly..these aren't immigrants..but illegal aliens...and the first protests with the mexican flags and spanish taunts were their true face...the white shirts and American flags are the PR of the organizers after the first protests drew such ire form Ameican citizens...don't be fooled..they have about as much loyalty to America as latin americans have, who live in latin american countries...

Remember that these marches have been planned and organized by the hispanic media in this country !!!

Reciprocal immigration laws between the US and Mexico would be fair. The hangup is the Mexican leaders don't want US citizens buying property in Mexico.

What part of "illegal" is so hard to understand?

immigration protests

One of the plans for the protests supporting illegal aliens is for all the Hispanics to boycott buying anything today to prove their economic power.

Personally, I plan to counter that protest and go out and buy something First, a new American flag, second some more ammo.

BTW, +1 on each of the above posts.

Better be brushin up on yer Espanol, folks. Nother 10 years of this and their flag will be flying on top of the US Capitol just under the UN flag.

Lemme see now.....Como esta. Buenas dios. Buenas Nochas. Uno mas pollo burritto. Uno mas cervesa.....Gracias Seniorita. Que es?

Did you know there is a huge US Residentual settlement in Guadalahara and other Cities in Mexico? Has been for years. Hmmmmmm? Might be worth checking into. Trouble is getting domestic help there. They are all El Norte. Walking in the parades....

Food for Thought

I don't want to get into my personnal view on this Subject but I will say this...

If your going to protest in the U.S. that you want U.S. right's and to be accepted as citzens and work in the U.S. then DO NOT FLY your Mexican Flag. The only flag you should be flying is the American Flag at your protest. If you have so much pride in your country and think it's great and don't think that America is treating you fairlly, then go back to good ole Mexico....

EDIT: This post in no way reflects the veiws of the company I work for or any of my family members or friends, just a personnal observation I made this morning while watching the News.

"We're not criminals. We're just regular people like everybody else here."

If you break the law, you are a criminal, by definition.

Makes you wonder. If these protests are successful in changing the lawmakers' votes, perhaps we should adopt this style of political activism for our gun rights?

Well, I guess it's time to stock up on some more ammo. Anyone can invade the place. Hell, who knows who is coming in. Anyone checking for diseases or criminal histories? A woman here in Rockland was brutally murdered in her own home by one of these "immigrants". Oh, and if you need to use the ER you can be sure it is packed by non-Americans. You will pay for those non insured, non Americans!

I see only bad things in store! MUY MAL for those invaders perusing this board!

yeah...gimme gimme.

I already speak spanish, had to learn it to understand the mexicans I worked with..cant wait to see who is going to come up with the money to refinance and overhaul the entire system after it breaks down from cost overflow.the coming months are going to get interesting.

If you want to stop the illegals from coming into this country you have to eliminate the reason they come. The main reason they come is for work so we have to start punishing employers who hire them. Start by fining them $25,000 per illegal hired. Then setup a call center to report illegal hirings with a $1,000 reward for information leading to illegals being hired. Once word gets out that you can make a easy grand by turning in criminals it won't take long for employers to get the message. When they do they'll be firing them faster than you can count. Then by by illegals.

What part of "illegal" is so hard to understand?

The "il" part, in English of course. Maybe us silly Americans should post some laws in Spanish, maybe they'll follow them then. God knows everything else is in Spanish (I've seen billboards entirely in Spanish!).

Unusual events

Well now, lets see, is there a precedent for this? Millions of illegal foreigners feel emboldened enough to protest out in public, in a country that they are not supposed to be in. Carrying their native flags. Demanding something from a government that is not theirs and they have no say in. I think this may have a significance that is beyond what we can perceive right now as it happens. Perhaps in the future history books(still in English?) it might be right up there with 9 11 as far as events of the early 21st century, especially if it continues. What will this May Day protest amount to? Will there be some kind of seperatist movement eventually? Look at countries that have a significant large minority that refuses to be ruled by, or cooperate with, the majority. Bad news. I heard the Dems were handing out voter flyers at the Dallas protests to drum up votes, and it showed the outline of Texas as part of Mexico, as if it were a new province. Go see if that rumbling noise is Sam Houston turning over and over. Yes, it would be a unprecedented crisis in our history if we were invaded by 12 million marching across the border at one time, but trickle in...like putting the frog in cold water and turning the heat up very slowly. Broiled froglegs, anyone? With salsa? :barf:

Look at countries that have a significant large minority that refuses to be ruled by, or cooperate with, the majority.

Like Colonial America circa 1776?

Frankly, I'm disgusted at the blatent racism here.
To those who suggest stocking up on more ammo: what do you want to do, round up anyone who's Hispanic (or looks that way), and escort them to the border at gunpoint? Do you feel that threatened? Maybe we should set up some concentration camps to hold them until we can toss them back over the border.

I don't support letting every illegal immigrant stay in the country illegally, and think everyone immigrating to this country should learn English (which most do). But fact is, most simply want a better life for themselves and their families, and act accordingly.
In my experience, there are a lot of jobs in this country that Americans are not willing to do. You may find plenty that will take the job, they just don't feel that that they should have to give anything in return for their paycheck.

I don't hear anyone suggesting we give anybody an opportunity to change their status to legal.

Mthalo

I don't hear anyone suggesting we give anybody an opportunity to change their status to legal

Let them get in line and actually do it LEGALLY rather than just grant them a free pass for hopping the border previously. I think that is a reasonable opportunity considering they are criminals for breaking the law

QuaTscH94,

So should we not give those that are here that opportunity? Have these people proven that they are capable of making a positive contribution to our society?

Got this from my father-in-law today (Attachment)... I found it ammusing.

Aside from my own anger and disgust at this entire situation, and the fact I've ranted about the illegal invasion more than is probably healthy already, I have another perspective to add.

In the previous 5 years, I've worked with internationals side-by-side from every corner of the planet. I have friends in all parts of Europe, Russia, Africa, Southeast Asia, India, Central and South America... Every single one of them came here LEGALLY, and left legally when the law dictated it was time. I still keep in contact with many of them, and the universal response (as one might guess, this isn't a situation quarentined inside US media) is disbelief and disgust. We have 11 MILION ILLEGAL PEOPLE inour country and they are being allowed TO INFLUENCE OUR LAWS TO GET WHAT THEY WANT. What the hell happened to the rest of us? What about all the people here and abroad who DO follow the rules? What kind of message are we sending the rest of the world by allowing this to happen? I don't have words for what is happening now.

I dislike the fact that those against criminalization (and the media is playing along) characterize these rallies as "Pro-Immigration".
No, it is Pro-IllegalImmigration and that difference is the crux of the whole issue (for me).

It is nice that some are upstanding citizens who are trying to make a better life for themselves. They are doing so in a way that is against the law. While they were here, they still could have filed paperwork to immigrate legally. They could pretend to be back home, using the address of relatives, if they have to.

But no, we must overlook this detail. Can I choose which rules are inconvenient for me? If I am otherwise a productive member of society is this okay?

Wait in line, play by the rules. Nothing in any proposal put forth affects legal immigration at all. My parents managed it.
Criminalizing illegal behavior is fine, admittedly they broke the law.

On a side note, why did the Border Patrol and INS not simply back up the trucks at these rallies? On camera many at these rallies admitted to being illegals.
